Just a Piece of Paper?

by Elizabeth Emerald

Two-penny rant

If I had to choose the "romantic" phrase I find most irksome, the winner would be: "It's only a piece of paper."

I am not biased by bitter experience; those words were never addressed to me. If they had been, my response would have been: "I'll find someone else to co-sign; now scoot!"

A woman with more forbearance, loath to cut off his di her nose to spite her face, might prefer to prod her "intended" toward intent to marry her.

In which case, I suggest she say: "If the 'piece of paper' doesn't matter to you, simply sign it over to me."

If he balks at that, refer to my retort above.
