19. Laughter

by Debra White

My Aunty Vera's funeral was not the perfect place
to lose my self control - I couldn't straighten out my face.

All had gone well until the point that we stood up to sing
but then someone behind me did this 'harmonising' thing

that sounded like a dying duck or p'rhaps a cat in pain,
I just could not believe my ears when we reached the refrain!

What started as a snicker soon turned into muffled squeaks,
then full on howling followed, tears were leaking down my cheeks.

It was so inappropriate, the timing, oh so wrong
and though I knew I had to stop, the giggles were too strong.

The 'harmonising horror' right behind me grew concerned;
assumed my state was fuelled by grief, his handkerchief I earned!

All true, I'm afraid... Not one of my finest moments!

state: a condition of being
