Aftermath
by Elizabeth Emerald
Shortly after midnight, Chuck, en route to his house, rounded a familiar corner and rammed into a boy on a bike.
The boy was killed instantly. Chuck, who'd been drinking, was charged with "Operating Under the Influence Causing Death, aka OUI- Manslaughter." He faces up to 25 years in state prison, a $25,000 fine, and a lifetime license loss. Chuck, age 73, will likely die in prison. Mercifully soon; wracked with guilt, he prays for release from his torment.
Such were Chuck's thoughts at the accident scene; the horror of which persists in haunting him into this evening,18 hours after the boy whom he'd hit picked himself up and rode off.
