Hell Fire Clubs were common in the UK and Ireland in the late 18th century. They were, essentially, sexual playgrounds in which rich and powerful men could enact their fantasies, exploiting both prostitutes and kidnapped virgins, many of whom were street urchins. The tradition is rumoured to have spread and continued throughout many countries, well into the 20th century. One such club, with varied venues, was believed to exist in New York in the first quarter of that century, patronised by many well known entrepreneurs and politicians, but - perhaps unsurprisingly - no credible evidence was ever produced to substantiate the claim.
