    You know, that flag the three firefighters put up that day went missing, for many years... my husband and I were just watching a documentary (recorded on DVR, 9/11/21) about how that flag turned up, years later, and was proven to be the original flag, forensics and all. It wasn't a big flag, it was 3' x 5', but it was Old Glory, the Red, White and Blue. We remember the 2,997 who died, including the 343 First Responders (I think there were actually more) and then the thousands who died in the decades that followed, after breathing in the toxins at Ground Zero. We remember them all. -

    As I round the corner, the field appears like a cemetery,
    white plastic-wrapped bales placed as giant headstones.

    Grey sky dulls the sight and muffles nearby airport sounds
    but heightens the smells of damp straw and fish scales.

    If Jethro had not insisted, I would not be here now
    in catfish meadow suffering the conflicted deja vu

    of the day I learned there really were not any catfish
    in this meadow, only the mystery of their smell and sting.

    Or maybe that wasn?t it at all ? perhaps it was bitter
    memory of the day I was 11 and learned Ola Mae was 15.

    We were both 7th-graders but she was tall, slender
    and, as the other boys described her, really stacked.

    You natch gotta be a catfish to catch Ola Mae,
    so Billy Joe Sampson said, telling me about

    the time Sammy passed gas at the wrong moment
    and Ola Mae started dancing with Jersey instead.

    Singing guitars at the county fair sound
    like loons in love with fish in the meadow

    while I reconsider eating corndogs as something
    like smoking bratwurst the way one holds a cigar

    and I light one up and suck as hard as I ever can
    only to fill my mouth with oily sensations,

    earning the nickname Oily Lips so that folks
    say he?s just dumb, but Lips is just an alter ego,
