Virginia Pike Gielow: It was always an exciting event when I received a birthday party invitation as a child. It was such fun to visit the toy store and select a gift for my friend. Do you remember how excited you were getting dressed up to go to a birthday party? I fondly remember my patent leather shoes and lace cuffed socks! On the way to the party I wondered what the cake would look like. Would there be ice cream? What games would we play? And remember the toy favors we received as a part of the celebration? I loved birthday parties. How exciting for me growing up that I had two birthday parties each year. As an identical twin, I shared my birthday celebration with my twin sister. While we rarely had a birthday party with our friends, because Mother felt it was not fair for our friends to bring two gifts, our family birthday party was a time of great joy with TWO birthday cakes. With the passing of time, in spite of the joy of those celebrations, it is difficult to remember the specific details of each birthday party, although I do remember the one with the two chocolate frosted cakes. I am of the female, chocolate loving species, after all! Even more exciting, only at our birthday celebration were we allowed to eat all the cake first and save the frosting to eat last! Any other time, we followed the rule of ??ladies do not eat cake that way??! What memories do you have of your favorite birthday celebration? We are never old in those childhood memories! |

I remember the little painted wooden chairs on the lawn; the magician; ice cream; musical chairs and party games - and, of course, the frilly dresses (usually tailored by mum), the patent leather shoes and the lacy socks. I couldn't wait for the guests to leave - we never opened presents during the party. It wasn't considered polite - wish I knew why! There was so much of food - little fancy hors d'oeuvres and sweets, mostly all made at home. Thanks, Virginia, for the wonderful stroll you encouraged me to take down memory lane! - | ||
