Letter: Dear Editor: I am 86 years old and lived through 32 years of domestic abuse. Things have changed over the years, some changes are good, some not so good. We have nearly overdosed our young people with sex education but we have failed to train them to ask the hard questions. Marriage/living together isn't just about sex, it is about every day life. I need the parents attention for just a moment. Have you taught you child to look for the signs of an abuser and trained them to ask themselves the hard question, "Am I committing myself to a potential abuser?" It only takes but a few minutes to walk into a nightmare but it can take years to get free, if you get out alive at all. I have made my nightmare an open book. I'm a storyteller so we quickly become friends as you read about my journey of abuse in my book, Behind Closed Doors. It is my desire to be able to put one of my books in every safe-house in America. Please don't turn your back on someone that is in trouble. Listen to your neighbors and friends with your heart. They may need your help. If you can't find the right words, feel free to share my story.

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Update: Miss Evelyn is at home but still trying to regroup. There have been four different agencies in her home today to draw blood, due therapy, teach her how to walk now with a walker since she can now put pressure on the foot she broke her hip on. So I'll be helping out a while longer. The Batesville News, an hour and a half away saw her TV interview and will be coming to do an interview for their newspaper tomorrow. This will expose her book to a whole new area. She is like a kid in a candy store. She eats this all up, and licks her fingers. There's not a shy bone in her body. Keep us in prayer as we continue to promote her book. God loves you and so do we.

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Update: Over all Miss Evelyn is doing good. She has mornings she's nauseated but that has to have something to do with the pain meds because she not used to something strong. We did figure out if she ate some crackers it would help. She still isn't able to put even half weight on her hip as the bone isn't healed good enough yet. She's becoming bored being confined to one room as much as she is. Thank heavens they take them to the dining room to eat and then therapy, even though that is painful. She'd be a lot more content is she had a laptop computer but I just haven't figured out a way to handle it financially so we talk A LOT on the phone, which is fine. That way I can get her stories up and she can get her reviews done so she can promote her piece. We are WAY BEHIND on getting responses to her reviews but we're tying. I do thank you all for the cards and flowers that have been sent to her. She thrives on them, as you are her family and she proudly shows off all her cards from you. Our fundraiser was cancelled due to rain. I've got to find someplace that is inside for the winter as we've got to get enough raised to have another 100 books printed soon. She never makes money one them, that wasn't why so wrote the book because most of the people that are desperate to read her book never has the money to buy them, of course she gives the book to them. She's busy sharing the love of God with all who care for her and she is dearly loved by the staff. They argue over whose turn it is to have her for the day. Evelyn Fort Stewart: Update. Miss Evelyn was having severe hip pain this morning, which is unusual for it to incapacitate her. They gave her some medicine and got the pain calmed down, but they have just came to take her to therapy again, which always causes it's own kind of pain at this stage. We've had a weather change here and it's much cooler so that may be part of the reason for the increased pain. Please do keep her in your prayers. If you feel led to send her a card, she loves hearing from you all especially since she can't get on the computer and communicate. Evelyn Fort Stewart: I love all of you guys. I wrote on Fan Story the past two years until I met Miss Evelyn and she needed some help to get her story out. I'd had my moment in the limelight and I wasn't having to give you all up to help her so it is all working out. I'll have plenty of time to write more of whatever God gives me to write on down the road. Miss Evelyn needs all the love you all are showering on her, the cards, the flowers. She's suffered so much and yet is so giving and determined to get her story out in hopes of sparing others what she lived through. Love you all and God bless. Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Update: Miss Evelyn has been moved back to Hiram Shaddox. They put her through some pretty tough testing but it was not her heart. praise thee Lord. They're suspecting a hiatal hernia. She was dizzy some this morning but is feeling better this evening. i just got back from Little Rock and testing. I'll start posting, and we'll start reviewing again tomorrow. She is so grateful for all of your love and prayers. Will update as I know anything new. God loves you and we do too. Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Update. I talked to Miss Evelyn about 6:50 this morning, She had a fair night, she's not dizzy this morning, which is good. Her blood pressure still isn't doing what they want but it's better. Still having slight chest pain so we need to keep her covered in prayer. I'm headed for little Rock this morning for tests - 4 1/2 hours away. I'm not happy about having to leave town and be that far away right now but I can't do much about it. I won't be back until Thursday night. We're going to try to find a motel we can afford with wireless Internet so I can keep in contact. have a great day and thanks so much for all of your prayers and love for Miss Evelyn. God bless. Evelyn Fort Stewart: Update...I just talked with Miss Evelyn. She is in the hospital. She experienced severe chest pain at 8:30 that was so severe she almost blackout. They think she had a mild heart attack. They are doing all the lab tests, possibly a stress test tomorrow, etc. She'll be in the hospital at least a couple of days before she goes back to Hiram Shaddox, if everything tests out okay. She said if what she had was a mild heart attack God spare her from a bad one, the pain was unbelievable.She asks that you all keep the prayers going up, she not ready to split this place yet, she still has a job to do for the Lord. I was so relieved to hear her voice i cried. It's been a long day! I'll keep you posted. I have to go to Little Rock for some major testing for Lymphedema tomorrow and Thursday but I'll keep in contact with her on the phone. We're going to try to find a room we can afford that has wireless Internet so I can communicate with you all. God loves you and so do we. Thanks so much for the love and prayers. She was so excited she had gotten more cards from some of you. You have no idea how much that makes her day, she's loved and nobody will hurt her now because she shares that love. Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: URGENT PRAYER REQUEST...I have just been notified Miss Evelyn has started experiencing chest pain and is being transferred from Hiram Shaddox by ambulance to the hospital. Please take time to pray for her now. I will keep you posted.

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Miss Evelyn was moved yesterday to the rehab center where she is to spend 45 days. If you'd like to send her a card, she shows them all off, she's at Hiram Shaddox - Geriatrics Center - 620 Hospital Drive - Mountain Home, AR 72653 Room 110/Evelyn Stewart. She was in some pain today, more than usual because they have got her meds on the right schedule yet and they didn't let her have her med that helps her sleep so she was awake until four this morning and they got her up to eat and therapy by six this morning. She said they had every thing straightened out now so all should be well again. She sends her love and thanks everyone so much for reading and continuing to review her stories. She thanks you for your love and prayer the most. God loves you all and we do too.

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Talked with Miss Evelyn this afternoon. She was very excited, and the doctors were too, that the swelling was down enough that they could actually get both of her shoes on, not that she's going to do any walking real soon, but it is a plus the swelling is down this much at this point. She had me print 15 copies of three different short stories for her to hand out to nurses, therapists, etc. Of course once they read one of the stories it's kind of like eating one piece of chocolate, you're not satisfied with the one piece. I have three more fundraisers scheduled in the next four weeks so I'm trying to fit in making more hair bows, headbands, feather earrings, etc. Somehow, God manages to get it all done. She said to be sure you all know how much she loves you and thanks you for your prayers and reading her stories. God loves you all and so do we. Evelyn/Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Talked to Miss Evelyn a bit earlier. She was pretty sick at her stomach, so sick she said she'd think she was pregnant if she didn't know better. She was better this evening. The swelling has began to go down in her legs. They did get her stitches out of her leg finally. There's some new machine they are putting her on that she says is really helping take down the soreness in the leg. She will be in the hospital until at least September the 16th and then move on to a rehab center for 3-4 weeks of rehab. She does have her hat with her and wears it to each meal and therapy. There's an elderly custodian that has been doing a we bit of flirting, she's kind of having fun with that. She'll find a way to make this experience as painless as possible. Evelyn Fort Stewart: Just talked to Miss Evelyn and she sends her love and thank you to all who are praying for her and have sent her flowers and lovely cards. She gets so much fun out of sharing all your cards,etc. with the nurses, therapists, and doctors. She's even got her cowboy hat on in her hospital bed and wears it down to breakfast. She's a character. If any of you still want to send a card or whatever she is in Baxter Regional Medical Center - 624 Hospital Drive - Mountain Home, AR 72653 ATT. Evelyn Stewart - Room 3314....she will be there until September 16th and then has to go to a rehab center for 3-4 weeks before she can go home for therapy. Please keep her in your prayers. God bless. Evelyn Fort Stewart: Talked to Miss Evelyn this evening. She will be in the hospital until September 19th and then will have to go to Hiram Shaduck, which is a rehab center for at least three weeks before she can go home and have home therapy. So it will still be a while before she has access to a computer so we will continue tag teaming, It seems to be working pretty good. Please do keep her in your prayers. She sends her love to all. God loves you all and so does she.

Evelyn Fort Stewart: We did some tag teaming today and got a new story up for her. They are dragging her up at 5:30 am to get a bed bath, dress and go down to the cafeteria to eat, then they do therapy. By 9:00 they let her have a break and a nap. Today they put some kind of a shoe on her and gave her a walker. she can only put a small amount of pressure on her broken hip, if she puts too much the boot beeps. She walked with the walker the space they would allow and she didn't make her shoe beep at all. her biggest complaint is not having access to a computer. They're allowed to have laptops and the hospital is set up for wireless but none of us has a laptop. She's tired but she's in good spirits. She sends her love. Please keep her in your prayers. Evelyn Fort Stewart: I went to see Miss Evelyn today. She really looks great for what she's been through. They moved her down to the rehab floor today. She had 3 0r 4 of us there from the church. We are tag teaming our reviews for now so it is keeping her and I busy. I'll keep you posted. Keep you updated. keep her in your prayers. Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: I talked with Miss Evelyn just before I went to church. They had taken her down for therapy. She said they twisted her like a pretzel and she did squeal on them at times. They can't give her any pain meds., which doesn't help, because 2m of Morphine almost took her life the night before surgery and got her put in ICU so they are not taking any chances. She says she's really not in much pain until they start twisting her around. Just keep her in your prayers. She tired but she's in good spirits. She likes getting me on the phone early so I can start reading pieces for her to dictate reviews on. Having to fit in bed baths and therapies are a nuisance but something that has to be dealt with. She's keeping the hospital staff in a jovial mood. They all love her as we do. Please keep her in your prayers. God bless. Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: I just talked with Miss Evelyn. She said she had slept most of the day. They did come in this afternoon and do her first therapy treatment and they were very pleased with what she could do at this point. They're telling her she will be in the hospital four weeks and she's telling them two weeks. Who do you think is right? I place my bet on Miss Evelyn. I'll be doing a fundraiser next week to help balance some things out for her so just pray God send a lot of people our way to buy hair bows, feather ear rings, ankle bracelets, and her book. Evelyn Fort Stewart: Miss Evelyn just called me herself. Since they are not medicating her with heavy meds she is alert. She was planning on going on an overseas trip to promote her book. She was to leave by Sept. 19th, of course now that can't happen. She has no access to a computer right now so I can get away with a bit I might not later. Everything is very financially tight right now. If any of you would like to send her a card with a little gift it would be such a blessing. better yet, get someone to buy one of her books so she can autograph it and send it out (I'll do the sending out, she'll autograph), she can do that from her hospital bed. She is at Baxter Regional Medical Center....624 Hospital Drive....Mountain Home, AR 72652...Room 5420 until Friday and then she will go to the third floor, rehab for three weeks. As long as she's in the hospital they will find her. Thanks for all of your prayers. Janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Just talked to Miss Evelyn's daughter. They did not do a total hip replacement. They put a rod from just above her knee through the ball of the hip joint. Then there's four pins holding pieces together. They could not sedate her because the medicine almost killed her so they did a spinal, meaning she was awake for the surgery. They are barely giving her enough of something to try to help her sleep since she did not sleep last night with all that was going on in ICU. She will be on the floor she is now until Friday. Then she will go to the thrid floor or Hiram Shaddocks for three weeks rehab. She can do no weight bearing for 6 weeks. They are estimating it will take her 6 months to fully recover. She's in good spirits, just very tired. Since they aren't sedating her it wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't call me late tonight when she gets everybody home. I'm sure she'll be dictating reviews by tomorrow afternoon. Do keep her in your prayers for a speedy recovery. God bless. janie

Evelyn Fort Stewart: Miss Evelyn just called me personally from pre-op. She got a nurse to dial me. They are getting her ready for surgery now. They gave her meds. last night that dropped her blood pressure so low she ended up in ICU. I will let you know more as soon as I know. Keep her in prayer. God loves you and o does she. Janie

Today has been one of the most awesome days of my life. My books have arrived. Behind closed Doors is on amazon.com and I have been able to post it on this site. It took me ten years and I shed a river of tears. In my heart of hearts I believe the book will bless many and hopefully be an eye opener for many so that they can avoid falling into the abusive marriage I did.

I look forward to your sharing with me the value of the book after you have read it. Keep this project covered in prayer as the money raised will go to help women, men, and children that have been abused.

Dean, I know you are an angel in Heaven with a ring side seat. God helped Momma live long enough to see "Behind Closed Doors" birthed so that it can be shared with others in hopes of sparing them the life of abuse that goes on behind closed doors. God loves you and I do too.
