Treischel: WoW! I was interviewed by Al Cole on his CBS Radio Program, "People of Distinction." It will air on October 9, 2019 at 8PM EST, 7PM Central, discussing my most recent book, Take Flight: The Sonnets. It airs on   Broadcasting Network through Apple Inc's iTunes Radio Network (under their News/Talk provision, featuring CBS Radio, Fox News, NPR, C-Span & BBC.) So that my associates can listen conveniently, the interview will be repeated until 11pm Eastern on that day.

Al Cole's and his talk show clients' interviews via Al's 24/7 Apple iTUNES BROADCAST STREAM at Al's Broadcast Station Page - http://peopleofdistinction.org/alcoleonitunesradionetwork/

Attached is an MP3 copy of that interview:

WryWriter: How wonderful! Thanks for the info! -
    Mrs. KT: Congratulations! -
damommy: Oh, wow! How nice. -
    robyn corum:
    Way to go, Tom!
    ?REPRESENT!!!? -
    sunnilicious: Congratulations! -

Treischel: I am popping in intermittently, as I am pulling together my Animated Stills book, that I hope to have published by this Fall. Concurrently, any new poems that I post here are for then next book after that, which will be a book about poetic formats. So bear with me as come and go.
Pantygynt: And there is no one better qualified than you to write on the subject of formats. The best of luck with both projects. -

Treischel: Hello, and Happy New Year to all my fellow Fanstorians.

I will be back on for a while again no,w as I'm working on my book of formats, trying to catch those that I needs to write a second example of. I'll likely also publish a book this year about Quatrains, the major poetic stanza, along with several variations on rhyme and Metre.

Hope to see all my old friends and looking forward to meeting new ones.

Treischel: Haven't been very active lately because lot's going on. Been posting on Youtube, am updating my blog and facebook page,. Most exciting of all, I finally published my 4th book, a book of Sonnets. Its 385 pages, containing 74 Sonnet variations, with 170 total Sonnets, and descriptions. The book is called Take Flight, The Sonnets and is listed on my profile at the bottom. All the poems were reviewed here first by my fans. Also, several Fanstory members are noted in the book for formats that they created: Jim Bartlett (Pantygynt), Stephen A Carter, Catherine Ginn (I Am Cat), Nancy E Davis, Jyoti. I also acknowledged helpful suggetions from Dean Kuch, Sandra Mitchell, Tony Fawcus, and Gungalo. I'lll now be busy with Book signings and interviews.

Treischel: I recently published my third book. My first two were published by Outskirt's Press and retailed for $53 and $59 in hardback each. My third one was published but LitFire Publishing and retails for $29.99 in hardcover and $17.99 in paperback. So I had the first two republished by LitFire at those same prices. I even got an author's website. Check it out at reischelsreflections.com
michaelcahill: Awesome, Tom. Great site. Love combining the words with pictures. :)) -
Treischel: Thank you Michael. Yes, I think they did a good job on it. -
Selina Stambi: Tom, how wonderful. Congratulations! -
Selina Stambi: Just visited your site. Impressive. Hope my 'hello' message got posted. (Not a robot!) -

Selina Stambi: Looks likes Santa's twin brother in the profile pic, Tom. I bet your popularity soars as Christmas grows nigh -

Treischel: Wow! Amazon has dropped the price of my first book from $56 to $5.86. What a bargain. Now is a great time to buy it. The green one.

Treischel: My wife is having a full knee replacement surgery today. All prayers welcome. Also, I will be tied up helping her recovery, so my poetry my pay suffer. Please be patient.
evilynne: Will certainly pray for your wife. I may come to that surgery soon as well. Just take care of your wife; all else can wait. Evi -
Linda Engel: prayers for you both. My hubby just had back surgery two months ago. I'm still helping him heal. -
mrsmajor: I will certainly keep her in my Prayers...You just take care of her, and we'll see you soon...You're work is well worth waiting for... -
    trimple: Hi, Tom

Sorry to hear that your wife needs to go under the knife but I'm sure that she will feel a whole lot better once healed.

    HUgs -
TAB_that's me: She'll be in my prayers. Tell her hello:) -

YvonneAguilar: I will say a prayer that your wife's knee is heels and may she have a speedy recovery.
I am sure your wife is comforted by your words. -

Treischel: Wow! I can"t believe that I finally won a second place finish in a committee sponsored contest. After entering nearly 100 over the last 3 years. This is the first time I got some recognition and got $25 dollars. I am most pleased.
I am Cat: What'd you win, Tom? -
I am Cat: OH! The Halloween poem! THAT was awesome! GREAT POEM! I'm so proud of you! WOOT!
tiny animated congratulations photo: Congratulations 6564374nb.gif -
    giraffmang: Many congratulations!
    -
mrsmajor: For a poet that knows many forms, and writes them well, I can only say Congratulations, and I wish you more to come... -
Gloria ....: Way to go, you! -
TAB_that's me: So happy for you! -
Dean Kuch: Well, it's about time, Tom! Time...Tom...that's alliterative, isn't it?
    So well deserved, buddy. Congrats!
    ~Dean -
    Treischel: Thank you everybody. -
Dean Kuch: Congrats, Tom. It's about time...
    ~Dean:-) -

Treischel: I am always perplexed by voting in the contests. The recently completed Embarrassing but True contest is another example. Two that won were among the least embarrassing of all the entrants. On a scale of 1-10 Embarrassment , they were about a 1. I mean come on, a bad date, and a misunderstood comment in a bar? How the Shag Carpet, the Fart, Paper Trails, or How Not to Make Friends didn't win is beyond me. Now those were 8-10 Embarrassments
michaelcahill: The contest didn't really ask for the MOST embarrassing but true situation, just embarrassing but true. There are a lot of factors that go into the voting. The quality of the writing for one. Just because something is horribly embarrassing doesn't necessarily mean it is funny or successfully written as funny. Who knows what voters think? -
Treischel: I agree that the writing presentation needs to be part of it, but in a contest about embarrassment, that has to be a major factor. -

Treischel:
I am Cat: Happy Birthday Tom... I hope that you can remember the good things today... like...

Treischel: I remember it all so well, even in me dot terming old age! -

Treischel: Has anyone else been having trouble connecting or staying connected to this site lately. It is getting hard to comment. I had to come over to the classic site to post this.
--Turtle.: Hmmm, I have only been having trouble connecting with people. Does that count?

Try clearing your cache. Sometimes that helps. -
Adri7enne: I've had moments when it's been hesitant and slow to open apps. I think the site is making some small changes. It always gums up the works for a little bit. -

Treischel: Hurrah! A third place finish in poem of the month. Thats the best I've ever done.
    TAB_that's me: Awesome!! Congratulations! -
I am Cat: Congratulations Tom! Very well done! A beautiful poem by an amazing poet! -
michaelcahill: Congrats. Wonderful work. Heavy competition, but a piece that just couldn't be ignored. :) -
Treischel: Congrats to you Cat for your second place finish, too. -
Treischel: Thanks to Teresa and Michael, too for the encouragement. -
    Linda Engel: Congratulations -
I am Cat: Ah, thank you Tom... a gracious reply... to which I am late to the party, as always. :)
    thank you dear friend. -

Treischel: Hey guys,
former fellow FanStorian, Stephen A Carter got a hold of me recently and said to say Hi to everybody here. He's busy publishing books now. If any one is interested, his Americana series is in print. You can see it at:
http://obaat.caoronebookatatime.ca

michaelcahill: That's great news! Thanks for passing on the greeting. -
michaelcahill: That link didn't take me anywhere.
However, this one should get you to his book.
    http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewwork.asp?AuthorID=186550&id=66577 -
Nosha17: Please send my best regards to Stephen, and let him know I am pleased about his book. -

Treischel: Ever notice, when your reviewing, how sometimes it says '" Save Replies" on the right button, while other times it says "Save" on the left button. Inquiring minds wonder why.

Treischel: Awesome, my second book has been published as of today - Tax day. How ironic.
It's called: Picture Poems Volume 2.

It's available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Here's the website to it.
http://outskirtspress.com/PicturePoemsVol2/

DIS-illusioned: Your second book is called Awesome--as well as 'Picture Poems'? How titillatingly ambiguous.
I'm ordering the pictures--minus the poems. Tax-free, of course. -
michaelcahill: Great website and it looks like a great book too. Congratulations. -
I am Cat: Thank you Tom... why am I always late? (thank goodness I had my fruit tree removed or i'd be in big trouble, eh? ;) -

Treischel: I get amazed by some who, when their profile reads they are here to learn and welcome criticism, don't really mean it and can't handle it.
DIS-illusioned: Remember, there are only 'A Few Good Men'. The rest simply can't handle the truth.
    P.S.
My writing is just perfect, thank you. -
William Walz: Fanstory is just chock-full of two things:hypocrites and megatalents. -
I am Cat: Oh... Hit me, beat me, but don't mess up my hair...

wait... you couldn't tell if you did mess up my hair... go ahead, give it a try. ;) -

Treischel: I have 9 poems recently posted, most had certificates on them. Only two haven't expired, here's the number of reviews on each:
7,6,6,5,6,7,9,4,4.
Add two poor results on contests this week.

I'm getting depressed. People don't like my work. I might as well chuck it in here.
LIJ Red: Your results are typical. First week of spring is a dull one, reviewers are outside. And remember, they
    follow the munny. -
evilynne: Hey, I usually finish toward the bottom in the contests. Don't get discouraged. I like to do it for the fun of it. Getting good reviews is a bonus, getting poor reviews a learning experience. -
michaelcahill: Naw. It's just a lull for some reason. Everyone seems to be on a break for some reason. I know the feeling, you're not alone. Hang in there. -
mrsmajor: Don't for one moment believe your work is not enjoyed, as it most certainly is by many of us...Keep on keeping on, with your writing, maybe some of us has just been sleeping...shame on us...Hugs -
MissMerri: People of taste and discernment DO like your work. I must like it a lot. I bought your book. :p -
Octavia: It's not that - your work is wonderful. I, for one, am so awed by your talent, I wouldn't deign offer my paltry offering. -

Treischel: Wow! My book is on sale at Amazon for $7.02. What a great price. That's cheaper that I can buy it for by $15.
    trimple: Congratulations! Tom -
MissMerri: I love a bargain! I'm off to get my copy. :p -
MissMerri: Your beautiful book arrived today! I could not believe it came so quickly! What a bargain indeed! This is a coffee-table book, full color artistic presentation of both poetry and photographs. An amazing accomplishment, Tom. -
Treischel: Wow! I am so delighted that you bought it, and even more so that you likes it. Thank you very much.
    -

Treischel: My second book is at the Publishers. Also, why does my profile picture keep disappearing?
    trimple: Congratulations, Tom!

Not sure why you photo disappears but it's there at the moment. -
    trimple: 'your'... -
TAB_that's me: It is there now but I have had that trouble before. To fix it, I changed the profile picture and left it for a day or two and then changed it back. It resolved the problem. -
michaelcahill: It's fading into the real world!! -
Robin Gilmor: Just looking in. Great to hear about your book. Sorry about your Mother-in-law. Prayers. isn't writing great in the winter! Smiles, Robin :) -

Treischel: Been off a bit. Karen's mother died Tuesday, 1/13/2015. She was 96, but sharp as a tack. Been busy with family. A bit behind.
adewpearl: I'm sorry to hear of your family's loss, my friend. -
gypsycaravan: So sorry for your loss. -
mrsmajor: I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, but, family come first at such a time, we'll be here waiting for your return...and happy to see you!
    -
mrsmajor: I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, but, family come first at such a time, we'll be here waiting for your return...and happy to see you!
    -
Sandra Stoner-Mitchell: I have just seen this, Tom, I am so sorry. What a wonderful age she was. It is always sad to lose someone you love, and our mothers are so special. -
Treischel: Thank you all my Fanstory family for your thoughts and support. -
MissMerri: Sorry for the sadness that has kept you away from us, but so glad to see you back, Tom. -
    trimple: Hello there, Tom

I am so sorry to hear your sad news. My condolences to you all.

    warm regards

    tracey -

Treischel: I started this New Year with 4 poems of my favorite formats (besides the Sonnet, of course) - A Lisalet, an Octogram, a Whitney, and a 12 Line Exhortation. The 12 Line Exhortation is a form that I personally created.
michaelcahill: Your 12 Line Exhortation is a pretty cool form. You should sponsor a contest. I'm in! -
Treischel: Thank you Michael for a wonderful suggestion. -
Selina Stambi: Happy New Year, Tom! -
    Treischel: Thank you Sonali -

Treischel: Happy New Year!
mrsmajor: Thanks the same to you, have a Wonderful, and Healthy New Year... -

Treischel: Instead of changing the format, i wish FanStory had worked on changing the quantity of their images. I get so disappointed when my imaged come out so blurry on here.
Kingsland: I don't have that problem. It may be your computer or your monitor. -
Selina Stambi: I'm back on Classic. I'm staying! -
Treischel: Din't know you could do that, but glad you mentioned it because now I am too -
Selina Stambi: Welcome back home, Tom! -

Treischel: This new format takes a while getting used to. Not sure i like it.
    shelley kaye: i know i don't like it :-P

    -
    patcelaw: -
Selina Stambi: Neither do I! -

Treischel: Maureen Napier is an amazing person and a outstanding poet. Her return from a coma is nothing less than miraculous. I just released a poem with a Gaelic title, Gu Brath An Ar Gradh,
Dedicated to her and her incredible family. Go read her profile page and be amazed.
    rosehill (Wendy): Sleeping Beauty?s princely suitors;
who needs those when you have Zooters!
    -

Treischel: My book is finally published. The link to it is:
Http:/outskirtspress.com/picturepoems/
    Twilightspire: Congratulations! -
    Linda Engel: congratulations -
Treischel: Thank you twilightspire and Linda -
pipersfancy: That is wonderful news! Congratulations! -
Sandra Stoner-Mitchell: I have just read this, congratulations Tom! I came to your profile because I hadn't seen you for a while, and then saw your announcement I am very happy for you. :) Sandra -
Capricorn30: Wonderful! So happy for you! -
Green Lake Girl: Congratulations, Tom. What a wonderful accomplishment! -
Treischel: Thanks to you all, pipers, Sandra, Capricorn, green kale, and Dean. I really appreciate your support and encouragement. Been busy off promoting it. -
Selina Stambi: Congratulations, Tom. Just saw this. AWESOME! -
Treischel: Thank you so much Sonali -

Treischel: Hooray! I finally won a contest after entering almost 100.
    shelley kaye: :-)

    -
shelley kaye: creepy! the smiley got hacked! :-P
    -
William Walz: One out of a hundred ain't bad! -
    Treischel: Lol -
    sunnilicious: Nice news.... congrats! -
    Treischel: Thanks Alicia
    -
innerworlds: My father once said "You have to try on a lot of shoes before you find the pair that fits". If it takes 100, it's worth it! Congrats on your well-earned success!! -

Treischel: A new experience is at hand. I finally got my book documents to the publisher. It will be a 119 page, coffee table book combining photography with verse. My first book. Now the fun begins.

I went with Outskirts Press.
    adewpearl: It sounds fantastic! -
Treischel: Thank you Brooke. I appreciate your support and enthusiasm. -
ravenblack: Congratulations! Your photography and words deserve a coffee table book. -
Torrence Winter: Predators and editors strongly recommends against using Outskirts press.
    -
    Treischel: Thank you ravenblack

    Torrence
    Really? You've had a bad experience? -
nor84: Predators and Editors is a website that contains useful information for writers. You can also check a publisher by searching the 'Net with the publisher's name and the word 'scam'. -
Julia.: Torrence is right. P&E strongly recommends against this publisher. They are a great resource with a large database going back years and years. -
Selina Stambi: Congratulations, Tom - AWESOME news! -
Capricorn30: Congratulations, Tom! Great news! -
GregoryCody: YEAH!! Fantastic. Your work is wonderful of course. Let us know where to get it! -
Treischel: Thank you all for your encouragement and concern. So far the experience had been fine. -

Treischel: I said I wouldn't do it, and then I went and entered another contest. I'm incorrigible!
shelley kaye: i guess you need a spanking....
    ;-)
    -
Marillion: I'm done with them. Bad, Treischel, bad! -
The Death: We are on the same boat then. :-) -
Treischel: Yup, yup, the draw to compete is strong. The ability to win is weak. -
twinklepoems: Yes it is...somehow you think...oh, 20 dollars I can post something else. But it is a Ponzi scheme I tell you! -
Johnny-artist: Hey Treischel +Johnnykid here. How've you been? Finished my first novel (inspirational at that). Lambing it to a lion's roar. From one author to another~ way cool! -
    sunnilicious:
Treischel: Thanks sunnilicious and JohnnyKid. -

Treischel: My wife says that I can't enter any more contests, it not good for my blood pressure.
shelley kaye: eh, do it anyway....

    -
Maureen's Pen: I'm thinking the same thing Tom -:)
    lol -
Selina Stambi: I stopped entering contests ages ago - it's too heartbreaking!!!

Good luck with the publishing, Tom. I'm booking an autographed copy. :) -
Treischel: Thanks Sonali. I'll let you know.
    -

Treischel: I am working on my publishing, so my writing and reviewing suffering. Please bear with me. Ill try to catch up when I can.
twinklepoems: Yeah! I support your working on your publishing! -

Treischel: Losing my spark.
William Walz: Sounds like you need your battery recharged. -
TOMORAL: You are an excellent poet. Just keep writing. We write for ourselves, you know, the rest is gravy.
    -
TOMORAL: Sorry, I meant to say you are an excellent writer..period... -
Treischel: Thank you for such wonderful encouragement, Tomoral. -
twinklepoems: Hi, Hope your OK. I haven't seen you post anything lately.
    -
Treischel: I'll try some reviews and maybe I'll get it back. -

Treischel: I'm really getting angry. My ranking keeps slipping and I can't get even a mention from the committee in contests. WTF.
Treischel: In fact I'm getting insulted. -
Treischel: If I ever get money, I'll start my own poetry site. -
adewpearl: falling in the rankings is no reflection on anyone's assessment of your writing - it just means some people who had been ranked below you have recently posted something that got lots of reviews - it's a matter of how frequently you post and how highly you promote your work to attract the maximum number of reviews -
Treischel: Right, so it's all about money.
    -
nor84: Not if you don't care about rankings. They don't mean a thing outside Fanstory, and very little in it. Just means you post frequently, so a high ranking and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee. -
Capricorn30: If you start your own poetry site, I will be the first to join! -
    Treischel: Thank you Margaret
    -

Treischel: A new season under the sun has begun. Trying not to let it slip away.
sunnilicious: GlitterFly.com - Customize and Share your images -
Treischel: That is really cute Sunnilicious. Thank you! -

Treischel: I wish everyone on the site a happy and blessed holiday season.
mrsmajor: Same to you, enjoy the season in good health.. -
    amanda98653: Merry Christmas:) -
Selina Stambi: Happy New Year, Tom. Blessings and good health, peace and joy on you and yours. -
Treischel: Thank you, thank you! -

Treischel: Man it's been a long time since I've been able to get 25 reviews on a poem. I guess it all about money. Empty pockets, means empty review sockets.
Preston McWhorter: I think you are right. What is the real effect of many reviews and honors any way? -
A TARNISHED KNIGHT : Yes how true that is then you find you need 26 and ur stck on 25 grrrr been there more than once or twice thats for sure You get support from both of us just cant do on same prose or yu would get that elusive 26 MR T -
Capricorn30: I have yet to receive 25 reviews on any poem. Two recent posts received over forty views and only 14 reviews. Yup, really gives me incentive to promote. -
    Treischel: Good point Preston. -
Treischel: Thank you TK, I know your situation and appreciate your support. -
Treischel: I hate when I get 14, and have to hang another certificate on that one when I need the funds so bad for the new ones. It sets me back. So I know exactly what you mean, Capricorn. -

Treischel: I love the fall, when the air is brisk and the leaves are changing.
    shelley kaye:

    -
Treischel: Great image of falling leaves Shelley Kaye. Thanks for it. -
Selina Stambi: The colours are stunning - I agree. :) -
    Treischel: Right on, Sonali. -
GregoryCody: You Autumn folk! ;) Im from D.C. So I do miss the seasons and colors but I think I prefer the sun on the West. Though it can get boring if that makes sense? -
Treischel: I know what you mean. -

Treischel: Fans aren't what you might expect, in fact, they fall far short of what I'd consider a fan to be. I have a supposed 64 fans. I did some analysis of the activity I experienced in the last week. It explains a lot.
In the Last 7 days I wrote 140 reviews, about 20 per day, I seem to be holding but not improving my position at 35th rank, but not improving. During those 7 days I received 110 reviews over all of the 12 poems I wrote during that time. Certainly far short of the 768 reviews I would have gotten if all my fans wrote a review, or even the 384 I'd have gotten if 50% of them wrote a review. The funny thing is, I got reviews from 24 people who aren't even fans, just 1 time passersby. So in 7 days I received 110 reviews, or 15 reviews per day spread over 2 poem per day, or an average of 7 reviews per poem. Since it takes 15 reviews to become recognized, I'm having to hang 3 certificates per poem just to get recognized. That means I have to spend $9.95+$9.95+$6.53=$26.53 just to be recognized. So I have less money to spread over my other poems. This should explain why I'm stuck leaving many poems at $.02 to review.
Also, over the last 7 days, only 6 fans gave 5 or more reviews, but I got no more than 8, 6 was the most typical.. That means that even my best fans are reviewing only 1 of my two poems, on average.
So, I have to say that, it is great to have my regular fans that I hear from regularly and value their friendship. I love to read others works. That is the best part. But, overall, this site I a poor value. It is burning me out, for very little return. I'm not sure I'll be able to continue this much longer, not withstanding what the results of contests and some reviews have on my psyche.
nor84: The value in Fanstory is not in the ranking system, which has no meaning outside Fanstory, it is in what you can learn from reviewing the work of others and from having them review you. Perhaps if you promoted your work to at least 50 cents, your fans would be more inclined to review. Also -- since you mentioned contests -- fans are not notified via their inboxes when someone enters a "blind" contest, and most member contests are 'blind'. -
adewpearl: I've had people sign up to be fans and never review again. LOL Yes, I would be drowning in reviews if all my fans reviewed even half the time. I don't fan people any more and still bet I review many folks more than their fans do :-) -
Treischel: Yes Brooke, I imagine that is so for you, I have that experience too. -
Treischel: I would love to spend $.50 per poem, but and I add certificates and pumps to my poem as soon a I can afford it. But it the rate that goes, as I explained above, I keep sinking. -
shelley kaye: some of your fans may not even be on the site any more....
    -
Bicpen: ... take it from someone that knows all about it ... the review situation on this site desires a lot for instance I have been trying to perfect my work to put it in for a seal so I can say that working on it is finished and it now stands as a completed work so if I feel like it I can think about going and seriously publishing the work.

Most reviews are full of lol nonsense as to getting and serious help turned into productive criticism and reworking the poem that is far and few between.

This site is built for ego and flattery not so much serious endeavour in mastering the craft ... for instance I have work with all time best and recognised I have some of these in a required book with stars representing exceptional work ... now remember my mind is limited as to correcting my work so I rely heavily on others opinion where I feel it is justified ... I put this work in for a seal of quality ... and lo and behold it fails ... works every time !

    -
nor84: There are serious reviewers on the site. I suggest buying a Lock and Key certificate so that you can invite the people you want to look at your work and give you a serious review. -
Twilightspire: Plenty of serious reviewers out there, you just have to look for them, usually by reviewing their stuff. There are some people that are excellent reviewers, but don't read certain things...for instance, it is rare for me to read poetry. I don't understand much of the technicalities of it and feel I can't give good advice to improve. I write a zombie novel, that a lot of my fans won't look at because it's not subject material they are interested in, which I'm fine with, but I understand that a lot of my hardcore reviewer friends look at my other stuff as well. -
Treischel: You may be right about that Shelley, maybe turn over is pretty high. -
Treischel: Good info bicen. So the seal is really hard to get too. -
    Treischel: That's a thought nor84. -
Treischel: Also good advice twilightspire. I mostly review only poetry, occasionally other things, -
Capricorn30: Your poems are wonderful! Keep up the good work, Tom. I often get discouraged with this site, but loyal support helps overcome the frustrations. Hang in there! -
    Capricorn30: -
Treischel: Thank you Margaret. It is the good friendships here that do keep me going. I appreciate your support and encouragement. -

    Treischel: Thank you Sunni. -

Treischel: Redeem me from depression as my aspirations have been crushed by performance in contests that have left me in the dust. I wouldn't be so saddened if I could win, place or show. But a cant even achieve that meager level no matter where I go. This month I was in Poem of the Month, Quatrains, Terza Rima, Admonishions, Seeds of Corporate Enlightenment, Phobias and 3-5-3 Water Haiku Contest. I have failed miserably. I cant even get better than fourth in a contest that had only 4 entries. My dapper is definitely down. I guess I just don't have what it takes. Without some win money coming in, I cannot afford to promote my work enough, only by reviewing. I'm wearing down.
redrider6612: If you were in the running for Poem of the Month, that's quite an accomplishment. The competition for that contest is quite intense since the candidates are chosen from all of the poems posted that month.

Also, take heart, every one of my 9 published stories were contest "losers" here on FS. Have you tried sending your writings out for publication? -
shelley kaye: don't give up hope! i became a member of fs in nov'04.... didn't win my first contest for three years (and it was amember-created one!) didn't win my first site contest until aug'08! :-)

    -
Treischel: Thanks red rider, I getting a book together to publish soon. -
Treischel: Thanks Shelley. Hmm. I is tough to win here. But geez. just a 1, 2 or 3 Would be nice. Doesn't need to be a win. -
nor84: Treischel, I've got awards from Fanstory sitting on a shelf -- and I don't do well in Member contests either. I've never won a site contest, although I've come in second and third more than once. And, as Red says, I've sold member contest losers for cash in the real world. -
pipersfancy: Hope you don't mind a newcomer adding to this conversation. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your comments about the need to feel successful, appreciated and well received... to actually BE successful in contests etc. For me, I feel a great deal of pride in my work but have denied that part of myself... as if it is somehow wrong or arrogant to long for concrete success, acknowledged through awards etc. But I do understand that need. And I'm so glad you commented on your feelings of being depressed or crushed when doing your best just doesn't seem to quite make the grade. For what it's worth, your works that I've read so far have been lovely. -
MM lives on :) : Keep your head up buddy, I was second to last in the Poem of the Month contest and your poem was outstanding. Your time will come and never ever give up~!
    -
AnonymousWisdom: Winning is overrated...in my opinion, the best entries don't always get a prize. Winning isn't the point...silly blue ribbons never are. Just practice, and write, and have fun.... :) -
Treischel: Thank you nor84. That helps. -
Treischel: Pipersfancy, yes, your opinion definitely counts. And I think you get it. It's not the prize so much as recognition. I heard several say that contest wins and even ranking means nothing, but I don't feel that, this is a worldwide site with hundreds of active poets. That is value. I just feel that the competition is so tough and I'm not cutting it, and that's what hurts. -
Treischel: Thank you Christopher. I guess you are right. I hope so. -
Treischel: Thanks AnonymousWisdom. I hear you, but this site costs a lot to be successful and reviewing and winning contests are the only ways I have to earn it, since I'm retired and on a pension, I don't unlimited funds to throw at it. I don't know, maybe your right and I just shouldn't care. -
Hawaiian Mermaid: I think your great!!!!!
    Glitter Photos
    [Glitterfy.com - *Glitter Photos*] -
Treischel: Why thank you Ginger, you give the best awards. -
aAngwin: You know I LOVE your writings and I don't even like poetry. That is a huge accomplishment! I have a published book but people seem to measure success by how many are sold. It is a good book, I just don't market myself. That is why I wrote in my bio, "I write because I have to." Keep writing your poems. You are blessing your readers with or without any outside acclaim. -
Treischel: Thank you ! That makes it worthwhile. -
joneau2: Hey, I don't know what moves these selectors to choose the winners, but it's obvious the reason is the writings are not better than yours. Keep trying. Persistence pays off. By the way, who chooses the winners? -
Treischel: Thank you Joneau. The winners are chosen either by those who vote, any one on this site, or the FanStory committee, depending on who sponsored the contest. -
sunnilicious: You're work is pretty awesome. Don't take it to heart... Just dance like Lady Gaga.

fluffnstuff: LOOK HOW MANY FANS YOU HAVE ..... WHAT AN HONOR! YOU ARE LOVED! FLUFF -
Treischel: Thank you sunnilicious. I'm a lousy dancer though, but I'll give it a try. -
Treischel: Thank you fluff. Not sure where they all went though. -

Treischel: As mid-summer Musings fill the air, I am immersed in flowers and birds and insects as I enjoy the bounty and beauty of nature.

Treischel: Happy Fourth of July every one! I thought summer would never get here!

Treischel: Hurray! I finally won a contest!
    AnonymousWisdom: Congratulations! :) -
rosehill (Wendy): Whoot Whoot, a cannon blast filled with confetti and a tremendous "TA DA!" Now, hang in here and keep creating.- Wendy -
mystery poet: It's so good to be here to congratulate you
on this award. You deserve it as I know
you have worked diligently. I join in the
celebration with a 'Big Congrats' to YOU!
    Love to you...mystery -

Treischel: Thank you mystery poet and lexiru, for you wonderful encouragement. -
    GregoryCody: Congratulations! -
Treischel: Unfortunately there were only three entrants. I won $15. -

Treischel: Losing ground, losing ground. I can't win a contest. I can't afford to use real money. I'm getting depressed. I've reviewed 20 poems this morning and didn't win a single pump. I have't gotten a single poem to 25 reviews (All Time Best) in over a month. I backed up from 19th poet to 30, and from 17 reviewer to 23. I am getting burned out. If this keeps up I'll have to quit.
Celtic~Soul: First, ignore the rankings. Outside of FS they don't mean diddly. Second, nearly every work posted that gets 26 reviews receives All Time Best--something's got to have collected numerous 4-star or less reviews to not earn that "honor". In short, the supposed honor is really rather easy to get because most people give out 5-star reviews most of the time. So don't worry about getting or not getting that. Worry about getting helpful, thorough reviews from top-notch reviewers.

As for winning free pumps and other bonuses, try to look at reviewing differently. Consider: Do you award mostly 5 stars to all those poems? Do you challenge yourself to review items that are longer (like prose) and/or need more work? You may find that by challenging yourself in reviewing, critiquing the pieces that you might award a 4-star or even a 3-star to, perhaps free rewards will follow? Remember to review kindly and honestly and maybe the system will pay forward rewards to you! -
redrider6612: Also, consider what is truly valuable. Fleeting virtual ribbons that don't mean anything outside the four walls of FS? Or constructive criticism that helps you become a better writer? -
Celtic~Soul: So right, Red. So right. -
janalma: Many times I'm lucky to get 26 views--even in contests. Reviews? Lucky to get 15, or 'recognized'. A month? Dang; wish I had your problem. -
    Treischel: Celtic~Soul,
Are you telling me that my revier ranking is in part determined by the number of ratings below a 5 that I give?

Also, I don't believe, that the award of pumps is any more than a pure percentage, most are either 25% or 50%. I was bemoaning that fact that after reviewing 20 poems I didn't get a single pump award. You'd think with those odds I'd have at least gotten 1 or 2. -
Robin Gilmor: Don't quit Tom. I've dropped also but I've decided to see it for what it is. I never would have written the thirty four chapters to my first book without the daily challenge. I decided to not put money on most chapters. I don't have it. At least I have written something, if only a first draft and have received great help from everyone. My poems I write for myself and hope others enjoy. Maybe I'll get them into a book someday for my children and grandchildren. Contest...I stopped entering a while back. Be happy and write. I love your pictures and verse. :) -
Arnhem: Firstly thanks for the kind words Treischel about 'Drovers Dog'.
Being new to this site, I too was wondering how the whole reviewing/commenting on another writers work is beneficial. Is this site geared at promoting reviews by way of ribbons, awards, ratings etc and if so, how does one know if the reviewer is 'top notch'. Who am I to rate some one else's work, I know what I like but the more I see of the site I can't help but think it is just another money making exercise where the participant is encouraged to spend money. I could be wrong but that's just my early impression.
    -
Treischel: There is a bit of that surely. But there are also a lot of good caring writers on this site to and I find that compelling. It can be a grind and a roller issuer ride. But it is exhilarating too. I'm on a pension and can't afford to buy in to the money, so I'm trying to survive by reviewing and winning contests. I think the reading other's work helps me. I am learning through the prompts too. I find them stimulating, as for being a good reviewer, if you are open and honest, that provides value. -
twinklepoems: Hi again, I am not sure of the inner and outer workings of the site. I noticed a big shift in January...like all of a sudden a big influx of new people in the college age range. Also, instead of a certificate promoting you to 5th page you are at the 7th or 8th page...I don't really "get" how all that works. Maybe FS could offer something like pay for 5 contests get the 6th one free. -
twinklepoems: The other thing I have noticed it that the average number of votes in any contest is an average of 30 total (give or take)so if all the contestants...usually 19 vote then 11 other people vote. Lol! -
    Treischel: -
Galactia: Hey Tom. I've seen alot of people get discouraged-by these ranking systems, they really don't mean much outside or even inside this site. It's all has to do with how much you post on a constant bases. 2 post every day, There are great poets sitting over 100 and they could write any style in meter just as good and if not better then the top 10, only difference is they don't post as often, only difference. I would be more discourage if I couldn't learn anything or improve in writing from honest helpful reviews from those on this site, then I'd be upset or continuous plagiarism in or out of contest. I'm not quite sure how those pump things work, they are rewards far between to receive.
but i do no, iused them for the 1st time after christmas i had collected 11 of them and went and used them in one go and it did nothing, I spoke to Earl about it, he informed me that you have to use them up when you first put your post up, if you try and use them on a poem already posted for a day or so, they don't seem to get as many people looking at it to review the work. kind of sad really. -
Treischel: Thanks Tia. Good advice. -
fluffnstuff: You are wonderfully you!...and if reading these booster-uppers didn't give you a bit more confidence.....well it sure did me! lol
CONGRATULATIONS to you me broke too fluff -
Treischel: Thanks fluff. Glad you can relate. -

Treischel: Hey! I made a second pal e in the Haibun contest. Never did one before, so was pleased. Best finish in many contests entered.
    Debra White: :) -
Val Crisson: That's great! I looked at that contest, and it was not an easy task. Congratulations -
Gungalo: Congrats Tom for coming in second in the contest. -

Treischel: I have my Picture Poem book with 50 Poems and 50 related photographs ready to find a publisher. Can anyone tell me how transfer to the publisher happens? I'd like to hold the FanStory formats and Author notes. I hope I don't have to re-assemble and format them again. Is there someway to download them onto a media? Can publishers draw directly out of the site?
Celtic~Soul: No, it would be a nightmare and no publisher would do all that downloading and fixing to the ms. for free. You need the information organized in a clean word processing file with minimal formatting. Are the photographs your own? If not you'll need permissions before you can publish them. Your pics or not, when they are inserted in the manuscript they must meet the publisher's format and resolution requirements.

No shortcuts. Unless you want to pay to have the set-up and formatting done, you need to grit your teeth and do at least the main document yourself so it's in a form someone else can work with. -
Shadow Pahn: I agree with Celtic. Getting published takes a lot of work on your behalf. Publishers are not out there to do people favors.
    -
Treischel: Dang, I was afraid your say that. -
Treischel: Yes, they are all my own photographs. Should they be in a separate file, or should I imbed them with the text. I'm think Microsoft Word and Jpg photographs. -
Celtic~Soul: You can insert them in a copy of your manuscript so the publisher knows where they go, but they'll still need separate files to be sure the color profile and resolution are correct and to be sure that they can be properly cropped and placed in the file for publishing.

The publisher you choose will give you guidelines for what you must do and for how much they'll do. They're all a bit different but most give clear instructions for preparing your manuscript to meet their needs. -
Treischel: Thank you so much for your time and information. Guess I've got some work to do. -
Treischel: Seems odd that since this is all digital and I've organized it into a book, that I can't grab it somehow and at least download it. -

Treischel: Well got crushed in Contests again this week. Got 1 vote in Rhyme with these Words Contest. Got 1 vote on Humorous 5-7-5, didn't place on 55 word story, And the Shakspearian Sonnet got 1 vote.
Treischel: Sestina contest just ended. Got only 1 vote, -
Debra White: Onward and upward, so they say! :D -
sunnilicious: I got 1 vote in the Sestina too... There were plenty exceptional entries. Happy Easter! -
Treischel: Well that's better than no votes, I guess. -
Treischel: Didn't even get a mention in the Share a Story Contest. -

Treischel: I am not sure what is worse. A quickly voted contest, were you find out right away that nobody liked your poem. Or one with a booth open several days were you check several times and get no votes, while glowing reviews roll in. You get excited, go check the booth. Still no votes.
Joannforsberg: I shall offer a vote right here that you are one of my favorite all time writers! So, enjoy your writings placed here at fan story! -
Joannforsberg: What is hard for me is when people encourage me that my poem should be a contender. Then, after the fifth place it was not even mentioned. So, obviously did not receive any votes in a blind contest. I would prefer no one got my hopes up that "I could'a been a contender". Ok, everyone what movie is that famous line from? LOL. Just a old has-been. -
Treischel: I know what you mean. Rocky? -
Treischel: This certainly can be an emotional roller coaster ride. -

Treischel: Geez, it's hard to figure this out sometimes. I got 15 reviews on my poem, On the Cross, without even putting a certificate on it. Rave reviews, Including two 6 star ratings and a couple virtual sixes, but in the Lectio-Divina+575 contest, not a single vote. What's up with that?
Joannforsberg: I know, I know, I know. This happens to me often. Very frustrating as just one vote is all I seek. Yet, if you add up how many people vote is so few. It is all good, because you are a excellent writer with messages that touch all. Rely on that! -
redrider6612: People can only vote for one entry. Think about it, they review all 12 entries, give all of them rave reviews, then when it comes time to vote, they choose the one they thought was best of the best. Just because you didn't get any votes, doesn't mean it isn't any good.

BTW, all 10 of my published pieces were contest "losers". -
Treischel: Good advice Jo and red. -
Indie Skreet: lol Treischel, I learnt early on that the best never win in the game of life - personally the only think I've ever won is a dose of the clap and I am not talking applause lol. Just realise one thing, many people who would vote for you are either not aware of the contest or if they are, simply are not interested because they haven't entered. It's all a game and the winner is the one who doesn't give a shit xx -
Treischel: Very true Indie. My skin is getting tougher. -

Treischel: I'm please that one of my poems was selected for last month's Poem of the Month, and made 3rd place. Such an honor just to be selected, not to mention to place.
kiwigirl2821: Congrats on 3rd place...in those contests I would take any place I could get... lol -

rosehill (Wendy): Hooray for you! It is a beautiful piece and you should be very proud of yourself. The voters sure got it right this time- Wendy -

Treischel: Another bewildering contest.I don't know what I have to do!!! I all but danced.
Joannforsberg: Understand. I have stopped entering them for most part. Your writing is outstanding, so do not base it upon those contest. Truly you are one of the best writers here and I am so glad you joined. Blessings, JO -
judelesemann: I agree with Joannforsberg...I think these contest are often popularity contests that are setup by a group who band together. I don't tale them seriously anymore. I just use them for writing prompts. Be blessed, Jude -
fluffnstuff: AWE SHUCKS...I WANTED TO SEE YOU DANCE....LOL FLUFF -

Treischel: Looking for advice. Need an illustrator to do each verse of my poem Christmas Postponed to publish as a children's book. But I'm not rich. Living on a fixed pension. Any suggestions?
redrider6612: Have you tried FanArtReview? -
Treischel: I gues I should look at the Santa shots there, huh. I take a look. -
Robin Gilmor: Treischel, You are my friend. I like your work; however, this i not ready for publishing. I keep losing my notes to you. I may do this as more than one. Next Robin -
Robin Gilmor: YOur ending is for adults, and children wil not get it or understand. I'd suggest that you rewrite the end. Kids have to understand. Great story with great illustrations...royalties for years to come. Don't hurry. Robin -
Robin Gilmor: I'm a children's lit person. that's why the bible people, the political, the free verse love and damnation are not reading my poems. I understand this. I've found your poem. It's my area and I hope I can help you publish a really good verse. -
Treischel: Ok, before I look at the ending. Stanza 2 has sunder, and postponed. Too hard for them?
Then the stanza about piloting in worse weather? -
Robin Gilmor: How about severed instead of sunder? -
Treischel: I thought I could add two new versesbthat might help convey that Santa couldn't make the rest of hid rounds. after slipping I'd add -
Treischel: The Reindeer could do nothing
they just stood there on that roof
    trying to get Santa's attention
As they shook each horn and hoof -
Treischel: The presents stayed in Santa's sack
As he held his leg and roared
While in the house the Children slept
And mom and daddy snored -
Robin Gilmor: Great lines . Just be sure the very young can understand the lines. -

Robin Gilmor: You are on a roll. -
Robin Gilmor: I copies your story onto my desktop so that I could view the entire piece. As you make changes I need to see the total picture to evaluate. I think you see the big picture here and in the end you will have a very successful story. don't rush anything. -
Treischel: I've made some edits to read simpler. -
    GE Parson: Mr. Treischel,
Did you ever meet or hear the name Fredric Wright? He is my wife's little brother and worked at Lock Heed Martin for many years. Retired now. He was next to the President in position. Jerry AKA G.E.Parson -

Treischel: After finding this site 6 weeks ago, I feel battered, bruised, enchanted, enthused, invigorated, crushed, inspired, elated, deflated. Wow! What a ride. This is the spot to be! I love it!
lauraangela: I am with you! -
    Sally Carter: Fabulous comment! -
    Eliza M: Isn't it just!!! :-) -

Treischel: An amazing amount of activity goes on here after midnight! Who Who!
atlas-manoftherain: No doubt. I find myself in the night owl category as well. You'll find most of my reviews are starting before before midnight but quite a few are written after midnight when I couldn't stop reading stuff. Love this site. Lots of fun. -

Treischel: Frustration With unknown Haiku rules.
Bellydanser: There are a hundred different sets of haiku rules, and some who don't believe there should be any rules at all. A good place to start would be AhaPoetry's website run by Jane Reichhold. You can google her and get access to several free essays. Even she will say that the rules are confusing, but at least she's studied the rules extensively to start with. It's good stuff if you can spend some time learning to understand the basic concept of link and shift. That's even more important than syllable count. -
Donya Quijote: The Haiku Handbook by William J. Higginson and Penny Harter has helped me immensely. Good luck. -
DIS-illusioned: I vote we plan a high coup on haiku. :-p
    :) -
shelley kaye: message "AlvinTEthing here on fanstory....

Treischel: cheap dirt to dig hole
    put this F-ing Haiku there
and then let it rot -
    Treischel:
    invisible rules
    torment the avid poet
    haiku really stinks -
Treischel: Oh, I guess that's Senryu another pile of horse apples. NEVER AGAIN. -
Treischel: If you can't appreciate a poetic artifact without a PHD in philosophy, its BS. -
Treischel: The rules need to be better clarified -
Treischel: Ok, I'm done with my tantrum. -
trimple: Hello folks, just thought to share with you a wee irony.I joined fanstory this month, having never written anything before,be it story telling or poetry. I am pretty overwhelmed to say the least. I didn t realise for eg that there were so many different types of poem. What a stanza meant,as for grammar, well between you, me and the back space key ,I use full stops simply as a means to breath between chapters. However, I am now feeling an overwhelming delicious sense of excitement,as I put pen to paper, writing my thoughts about the weird and wonderful, happy and sad and just about anything I can concoct as I do the simplest things. Happy to the extent of compulsive, I recently increased my intake of nicotine from 20 to apr 40 a day. Didn't sleep for 2 nights . I became totally wrapped up in thought, pen and paper. A happy bunny indeed until suddenly , last week 22/11/12 I was rushed into the cononary crash unit. Me ! Heart attack! at my age ! oooo eeerrr. A strange experience to say the least, 2 totally blocked arteries. Lifes a funny bugger. One minute your on top of the world buzzing with fulfilment, the next ya at deaths door asking WTF ! Well at least it gave me yet another thing to write about lol :) kind regards Trimple

Treischel: You said a mouthful! I know what you mean. -
Treischel: You said a mouthful! I know what you mean. -
Gloria ....: Ha ha. It takes a while to get the hang of what the haiku rules are and then as soon as you do, the secret committee meets again and changes them just to keep you on your toes.:) The secret is getting on the secret committee. -

Treischel: I love how this pushed you to new creative efforts. I get excited.
    DIS-illusioned: What, who pushed me?
    :) -
shelley kaye: *sneaks up behind dis*

Treischel: Where can I get information about book Publishing?
shelley kaye: message "showboat" here on fs. she and her hubby have their own pod publishing company. check out: omegapublication.net

    -
    DIS-illusioned: And shell's 5% commission is in the mail--chi-ching!
    :) -
Lady & Louis: Use a Google search. You can look at the Preditors and Editors site to check if a company is dodgy. It all depends, too, on what sort of publishing you mean - self-publishing or traditional. If you're looking at traditional publishers, read their own websites for submission requirements. And do shop around if you're self-publishing, there are lots of options out there. -
Sararb: Hi Treischel, I am so happy to have you for a fan, and I am already enjoying reading your work. You have a lot of talent! Sararb -

Treischel: Now I know where the term "Putting in my 2cents worth" came from.
    Eliza M: LOL! -
    DIS-illusioned: Haha! :) -
Treischel: Man, this site keeps you busy. I like that! -

Treischel: Looking for advice. I wrote a poem about the 9/11 Event about a week after it happened that has over 1100 words in it. Each Stanza describing a separate event that occurred such: Tower 1, Tower 2, the Pentigon, the plane in Pennsylvania , the Dead Priest, dust covered victims, the collapses...,
anyway, I saved all the newspapers and magazines at that time and scanned the images into my computer. Then I created a PowerPoint and laid my verses over them. It's quite good.
My question is, how can I get permission to use those AP pictured, and how much would it cost?
DIS-illusioned: Give credit where credit is due. Use proper citation, entailing references to sources and such, when you post the poem.
I believe AP pictures and texts data are open to/free for public consumption/use. Just credit the sources.
Good luck with posting the poem. :) -
Treischel: OK that spuds pretty straight forward. Thanks Dis. -
    squid152: Welcome to Fanstory!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
    Treischel: Thank you Squid -
