FanStory: Introducing Winless Contests! These are contests for authors that have not won a contest recently. So you can only enter if you have not finished in first place in a contest for a specific period of time. To locate this type of contest look for the Winless icon on the contest listing. These new type of contests will be featured as Writing Prompts every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Also anyone that creates a contest can create a Winless contest. A special thanks to K.L. Rockquemore as this feature came from the wish list after suggestions by this site member. |

Sincere apologies for this poor work product. Through Fan Story's review system I am now able to punctuate with 50% accuracy. Poor, yes. But remember the significance of baby steps. Let it RHYME I have a thing about poetry, I don't know where to start. I can't put my finger on it. It just seems to touch my . . . Brain. BUT . . . There's something that's irked me, and YOU probably think it's a joke. I will admit, it's somewhat whimsical, SO in fun I have to . . . Jab. I won't say I'M a poet, that's such a lofty title. But sometimes my thoughts flow, then other times they're stuck in . . . Neutral. (But back to the thing that bugs me, it's easy for me to digress. Too often I lose my train of thought, leaving my listener to . . . Wonder.) I have a peeve . . . And it's probably my pet. I will tell you what it is, but not quite . . . Now. I am sure that we all have them, you tell yours, and I tell mine. Of all the things that could frost us, For me it's the end of a . . . Phrase. I'll get intrigued with the title, of a poem I want to read. I'm engrossed with the first few lines, but it fails to meet my . . . Desire. If you go through all the trouble, taking so much of your time, picking out just the phrase that you want, why not make it . . . Sound the same? So if YOU ever take up poetry, and the limericks are coming fast, just remember this little ditty, and rhyme the word you put on . . . The end! -

The reason you see the 5-7-5's and the flash fiction contests is because they are so popular. The Sonnet contest, for example, sees a fraction of the entries of a 5-7-5. That said, there are many different type of poetry contests available to enter. You just see more of the popular ones because that is what authors enjoy writing for. But we do monitor the site member contests. If something does well (fills up for example) that's a good sign and often results in a repeat with a cash prize. So if you have an idea of what you think will be well received - create it. Thanks, Tom -

Please reply and Re Document within a chapter In my first chapter of 2,138 words, a character finds a printed sheet of paper - a song sheet that contains 11 lines of lyrics. The finding of the song sheet document is essential to the story line of the mystery plot. Also, I have placed the document as an image within my chapter text. Is my entry acceptable or is the song sheet document with its seven lines that rhyme considered poetry? - Lobber -

If it can be reinstated, here's the edited version: Pope Benedict XVI was the first Pope to resign in over 500 years. In a recent interview with Joseph Ratzinger, he detailed why he stepped down. He was upset the Bishops referred to him as "Eggs". His dissatisfaction grew with his cell phone provider charging him Roman fees. Working church ballgames was demeaning; going from confessions to concessions. It made him uneasy listening to all the rumors he was going to get what Italy is shaped like. He had noticed the church attitude went from Vatican to Vatican't. The writing was on the wall when he found out he smarted off to his superior on Undercover Boss. A business opportunity presented itself for him to open his own pawn shop called Pawntiffs. He chose not to renew the lease on the Pope-mobile. Joseph concluded his comments by saying... "Popin' ain't easy". -

FanStory: We are happy to introduce a new feature as part of our 20 year celebration! Last year we introduced ranked posts. Once your poem, story or book chapter gets 26 reviews it will be considered for All Time Best status. If it receives this status it will be ranked. If you continue to promote your post it can move up the rankings. This year the top five ranked stories, poems and book chapters will receive a prize at the end of the year. Everyone knows that every writer loves a good mug! So if your post is in a top five spot you'll win a customized mug that has your posts rank!

FanStory: We've upgraded the site in many areas. Our goal was to focus on ease of use and better communication with others. Key areas to look at are your feedback page and reply page. Also from your "MY" menu (or profile) choose "Contests". That will bring you to your contests page. This page has been completely overhauled to make it easier to track contests and enter contests. It is now like your own private contest page as you make reservations. The buddies feature has also been completely changed (yes it existed before but was limited) to allow members to easily stay in contact with others. There are changes throughout the site in look and feel. But we went to great lengths to make this upgrade seamless. Hopefully nothing should seem unfamiliar just enhanced. If you have any questions please let me know. Thanks, Tom |

FanStory: Writing a script is fun and challenging. It's also a great way into the business of making money with your writing. FanStory needs more script writers. Last year we only had 16 ranked script writers. Compare that to the 700 ranked poets. So this year we are going to do our best to encourage writers to get involved. We are starting off our campaign with a writing contest for script writers! It only takes four scripts to get ranked. So make this your first. We'll have more contests after this one. Check out our new script contest. Have fun! |

Sometimes, I can?t think of anything to post about in this blog. It?s a distinctly anxious feeling, rather like the experience of the newspaper editor protagonist of Terry Pratchett?s Discworld novel, TRUTH, when he looks at the giant printing press, just squatting there waiting, waiting for content. ?I must feed it,? he thinks, half in a panic, and, grabbing his notebook, races out into the night in search of a story. Gotta love Pratchett! Anyway, this time when I couldn?t think of anything to post about, I asked someone in the Aol Authors Lounge if she had a suggestion. ?Why not write about those sites that get people to post their work for free?? she suggested. ?Write about how that can compromise their publishing rights.? Well, BINGO! Great idea! Thanks! There are tons of ?post your work here? sites on the internet. Some are incredibly sleazy, others are a little nicer looking. The main things they have in common are these: 1. They will post anything, no matter how poorly written. There is no editorial gatekeeping involved. 2. They tell you that the feedback you?ll get from posting on their site will help you become a better writer. 3. They all ask for money from you, the writer (or reader). Either in the form of donations, or as a subscription. 4. Some actually go so far as to imply that posting your work for free on their site, or even paying to have it placed there, will increase your chances of finding an agent or a publisher. 5. They all post your work in such a fashion that it?s easily accessible to the public. Anyone can read and comment on it. When you post on such a site, most commercial publishers would regard your work as ?published? even though you weren?t paid for it. I reviewed a few of these sites in order to write this post: www.fanstory.com, www.blogit.com, and www.your-poetry.com. One site, www.voxtango.net, I?d run into previously, due to complaints from authors who?d posted there. Here are the problems I?ve noted with such sites, and some advice regarding them. 1. If you think you might EVER want to try and sell a story or a book to a commercial venue, then DON?T post it on one of these sites, especially in its entirety. The feedback you get as an unpublished writer can be seductive, I realize, but posting on such a site can, if publishers want to be picky about it, ?use up? your First North America rights. (Remember?publishing rights are NOT the same thing as copyright. See my earlier post on this subject.) If a publisher deems that you?ve published the piece, even though you weren?t paid for it, then the best that you can hope to get for it is the payment for a REPRINT. Which is a fraction of the money the piece would be worth as a first-rights sale. And since these sites don?t pay the authors in the first place?well, I think you see my point. If you want to get feedback on a piece that you have no intention of ever submitting, or a small excerpt, that?s probably okay, though IMHO it won?t be all that useful. 2. The feedback you receive is from other unpublished writers, even those who style themselves ?reviewers.? In many cases, this amounts to the blind leading the blind, sorry. One of the pieces I reviewed on fanstory.com had five stars and was rated ?publishable.? I beg to differ. The writing was purple, and the story logic just didn?t hold together. The chapter rambled, and the writer obviously hadn?t done his research into police procedure, ballistics, and forensic procedures. And yet this writer is posting every chapter of his detective novel, and getting these five star reviews. By the time he?s posted the whole novel (thus effectively rendering his book a reprint, see above), he?s going to think he?s really hot stuff. He?s in for a rude awakening. Also, some of these ?reviewers? get their ego-boo off trashing the writing of other aspiring authors. Most distasteful. 3. When you put your writing up on a site like this, it may be hard to get off. I?ve been told by several authors that Voxtango.net, has refused repeated requests to remove stories or poems they posted there. The site owner seems to think they have the right to have the pieces there in perpetuity. When you consider that newbie writers might post there on impulse, then later change their minds and decide to try and submit their work elsewhere, this can be a real problem. 4. These sites often try to imply that posting your work for free on their site will not only help you become a better writer, but that agents and publishers could see your work there. Yeah, right. And Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny will offer you publishing contracts, too. I can?t stress too strongly that legitimate agents and publishers just don?t have the time to go searching for more slush to read. They have all the slush they can handle ? and more ? delivered straight to their office via the US Mail every week. Ask Miss Snark, and I?m sure she?ll back me up on this one. Now, a word before I go. There are a number of legitimate online magazines. Some pay, some do not, but they are well respected for their content, and they do editorial gatekeeping. There are also password-protected online critique groups that are NOT the same thing as these ?we post everything for everyone to see? sites. Critters is one such group. I think Zoetrope has another. These sites are designed for writers to workshop pieces, just as they would in a real-life writing workshop. The public can?t wander by and access the stories, because they?re password protected. The purpose of these sites is not to allow just anyone to read the story posted, but for a select group of other writers to read it so it can be workshopped.. These sites are not the kind of sites I?m talking about. I?m also not talking about fanzine sites. Fanzine sites are where writers post stories written in someone else?s universe. These writers can?t possibly sell their Star Wars, or Star Trek or Alien story, so they post it so other fans can read it. (This is in violation of copyright law, of course, but most franchises ignore the practice as long as the authors don?t try to make any real money off these writings.) Fanzine writing can have its own problems for aspiring writers. It can be seductive, and so much fun that the author never does move on and write in his/her own universe, despite earlier avowals that that?s what they wanted. However, as a hobby, for those who either want to indulge themselves for a while and play in someone else?s sandbox, or fans who really don?t have any desire to establish a writing career, then fanzine writing can be fun and harmless. Just make sure you don?t make money at it! (Some fanzine writers, publishers and artists do actually make some money at it, but they keep it very much sub-rosa, lest the franchise holder find out and shut them down.) So?write on, write well, and resist the temptation to give your work away! -Ann C. Crispin Author: STORMS OF DESTINY/Harper -

To celebrate the new year and the new 2018 rankings we've announced new 5-7-5 poetry contests. We have a 5-7-5 poetry contest in January (deadline is next week) and one in February, March, April and one in May! We promised more contests and we have already delivered! All have cash prizes. Some of the rhyming and near rhyming words seemed forced but overall worth revisiting. I think with a bit of restructuring of the verse it could be better than a good poem dip This happened after I gave the guy this review... With respect Lisa it was prose not rhyming verse. Prose doesn't normally have a rhythm to it as there is no rhyme scheme in prose to create a rhythm or beat. If you are at all interested, please visit my other 3000 posting all done in rhyming verse. I hardly ever write prose as a matter of fact it's probably one of about 5 if lucky written in free verse. Please show me an example of a poem in free verse or prose that has a created rhythm. Thanks for the average review much appreciated. I don't think I've ever been given a three so there's always a first for everything and you are the lucky reviewer to do it. dip very underhanded, but still it was done. -

FanStory: You asked for more writing contests. We've added more! Three new writing contests with cash prizes have been added to the contest listing. Two of them with deadlines just a few weeks away! To decide what contests to add we looked at our 17 year history of hosting writing contests to find the ones created by site members that were the most popular. What were they? The most popular were flash fiction contests. We recently added three flash fiction contests so we did not add more. Next was a dialogue only prompt. So we are happy to announce the Dialogue Only Writing Contest. Followed by that was romance. We have announced the Unexpected Romance Writing Contest. Next was non-fiction. We have introduced the I Remember writing contest. All have cash prizes. Good luck! |

FanStory: We've never seen script writing take off on FanStory like poetry, stories and novels have. Yet, it may be one of the more profitable ways to make money as a writer. So we will be featuring at least two contests this year with cash prizes for script writers. It's a fun writing style. The formatting rules are simple. Our first script contest has been announced and includes an original work by the "Tom's". You can use it as a guide to write your own script. Click here to find out more. |

FanStory: This year we are going to celebrate a new year of writing by having a rankings race! Starting Sunday you will be ranked when you post six posts of the same type (for example, six poems). The writer that is in first place after ten days on the Poetry, Short Story, Script and Novels rankings will win the contest and a 50 Member Dollar Prize. So the four authors that are first in the rankings on the morning of Wednesday, January 11th will win.

FanStory: I was working on a script to show what makes FanStory special to YouTubers. You know, those annoying ads that show up - that you are forced to watch - prior to a video being shown. Yes, FanStory is going to try this out. See if we can get some new members from a video ad. Well, I'm working on it and it occurs to me - what am I doing? This should be a writing contest! Surely anything I do will pale to what the writers on FanStory will come up with. So instead I'm going to judge my first contest! I hope you'll participate in Write a Script For FanStory. And for the first time ever, I'll judge a contest. - Tom |

FanStory: The second phase of our upgrade went in today. For all contests with a member dollar prize pool we are rewarding second and third place finishes. The contest winner will win half of the prize pool. The second and third place winners will evenly split the remaining prize pool. So if you win first place in a contest with a 50 member dollar prize pool you will win 25. The second and third place finishers will evenly split the remaining 25 member dollar prize. Also, as was reported yesterday, we will be updating your profile to reflect any contest wins including second and third place finishes. These improvements were from our wish list. Please keep the suggestions coming! Thank you! |

It shows you the next post you can review that will give you the best chance at winning a free member cent pump. It also provides you your reviewer rank and the number of votes you received in the reviewing contest so far this month. In addition, if you have not replied to the reviews you received (or cleared the count) you will be notified when you have new reviews here. |

The newsletter will be emailed later today. Besides a brief article on poetry it will also be used to list contests with cash prizes for the month the newsletter is issued. In addition, FanStory was upgraded again. Your top toolbar (where your "MY" menu is) was updated to allow for a larger font. FanStory: Unfortunately we have seen the loss of several wonderful FanStory authors. They will be missed. Friends and family have contacted us asking for the ability to keep their writing available after they have passed. To address this we have introduced an account upgrade. The Eternal Flame upgrade gives authors the ability to purchase an account that will never expire. Writing will remain online even if an account is no longer paid for. If FanStory is contacted about the death of an author we will light the eternal flame for that account. You can see an example of this by viewing AlvinTEthington profile. Information. |

FanStory: Introducing a new way of running contests! We are happy to introduce a new feature for contests created by site members. When you create a contest you now have the option to request that the newly formed Contest Entry Compliance Committee (CEC) be responsible for monitoring your contest entries. The committee will read and ensure that all entries follow the rules specified when the contest was created. If not followed, the entries will be disqualified. This feature takes the responsibility off the contest creator (that can not create contests just for fun)and provides an improved means to run contests. Contest run by the CEC cost an additional 50 member cents to enter. This fee goes to the committee members that monitor the entries. |

In addition, with the full view you can choose the size of any image displayed. Either have the site automatically size the image (based on the screen of the person that is viewing your work) or you can specify how large the image should be sized (from small to large). Night arrived, devouring the shadows and granting a few hours of rest before the battle began again. The wind smelled foul and sounded unsettled. It wasn't going to be a good day. The pitter-patter of little feet in the hall normally woke her each morning. Today, it was the absence of it. The ad didn't make it clear what they wanted, but the pay was enough to make him pick up the phone. "Ten items in your house connect the spirits to you," the medium had said. "Find and destroy them." FanStory: A couple of updates about the new Registered Copyright upgrade. First, there is some confusion over what this feature is. The best analogy is with "poor mans copyright". Mailing yourself a letter and not opening is said to be a way to show that you are the copyright owner because the post office date and time stamps the envelope. Think of this new feature as a high tech version of this. We date and time stamp your post and "lock it in time" using modern technology. The difference is that you can not steam open this envelope. The date and time stamp can not be edited and the work that is registered can not be edited. Keep in mind that this is a copy of your original. So the site features have not changed. You can still edit the original post that is shown to readers while still having that separate "online envelope" with the date and time stamp. The second concern was on the member dollar price. Those with large books or many posts felt that it was too costly to register the copyright. To support writers that posted prior to the upgrade we have lowered the cost to only one member dollar for those posts. So if you posted work prior to the upgrade it will only cost one member dollar to register each post or chapter. In addition, for all new posts we have lowered the cost from 9 member dollars to 5 member dollars. Thanks, Tom |

FanStory: New Feature! FanStory is happy to announce a new feature to help authors protect their copyright. When you view your portfolio or post or edit a work you will have the option to register your copyright. This gives you the option to create a copy of your work on our database that is "locked" in time. We date and time stamp it and create a separate copy that can not be touched. In addition, we provide a registered copyright web page that is always available to you. It contains the details of your copyright that you can print. Here are the details from our help pages: What is this? In most countries, copyrights are "automatic", but you still need to establish timeline evidence of your ownership to properly defend your copyrights. No matter what, the most critical piece of evidence you can provide, is the simple fact that you "had it first". When you use this service we will time and date stamp your post with your personal information. We will "lock" your post in place with that date and time stamp. So we retain a copy of your post that can not be edited. In addition we provide you with a registered copyright page with this information that you can print out and also view online at anytime.
Where is my personal information being shown? What does this cost me?

The story takes place in the past, or the present, on the earth, or elsewhere. Someone lives alone in a castle and that person is a werewolf. And then someone comes. Who comes and what happens next? -

Contest prompt might be something like: Write a haibun (either imagistic or narrative). Vickib likens a haibun to an outfit. There is the hat (the title), the outfit (the prose) and the shoes (the haiku). All complement each other without being redundant. Generally, the prose consists of short phrases with powerful images. (I can send a helpful site with examples if this sounds interesting). I know there has been interest expressed in responses to recent posts by IndianaIrish and me. -
The Races. (Might be a good one. It could be horse, political, car, track, etc.) The canary's missing. The cat's in the cage. (Write something ridiculous with a clever twist.) What's up Doc? ( Hospital stories. Lots of those here) Snoring. Oh, the snoring.(sentence starts the story) Grandma/Grandpa drove her/his Hover Round ... (funny story about electric wheel chairs/scooters) Stop before you ...(another sentence starts the story) It's Only Make-believe. You spend the day with a famous person. What happens? I love you, but ...(sentence starts the story) -
A new neighbor in your apartment appears to be a vampire. Is he or she really a creature of the night? What do you do, and what happens next? -

I would just like to say that I am DELIGHTED with all the new contests you have posted! Not just the five "big" ones, but also all the writing prompts too. You have given my inspiration a great big super-boost and it is very much appreciated! Thank you to all those who have made Fanstory what it is - Cally :))) -

Start a story with the sentence: She was my only hope, and now she was gone. -
| ||
Of course I've rambled on and on about the premise, but the story would sure be fun for some strange person besides me. :-) -

FanStory: Introducing the Seven Star Rating The seven star rating is a new feature reserved to the Contest Committee. It is a special way of recognizing outstanding writing. When a post earns the seventh star it will impact the authors rank. The rankings will recognize this recognition by the committee. It will also impact the artists overall rating for the type of writing that won the contest. The Contest Committee will provide winning contest entries with seven star ratings. Contests that win Contest Committee decisions as well as the monthly recognition contests (such as Story of the Month) will earn the seven star review. The reviews offered though in each case will be different. A Seven Star rating for a Contest Committee decision will recognize (in the text of the review) that it is a Contest Committee win. Winning a monthly contest (such as Story of the Month) will still receive a Seven Star rating but the credit will go to the community that ultimately rewarded the recognition. |

FanStory: A site upgrade has been released. Now you can send a challenge to a friend. We introduced writing challenges this week. A writing challenge gives you the ability to create a contest that you and another writer can participate in. You asked for the ability to create a challenge but specify that the challenge be made avaliable only to a person you choose. Now this is a feature. Challenge a friend. When you create your challenge simply choose your friend when prompted for a challenger. Or specify "anyone" to create a challenge that anyone can accept. |
