This is wonderful. Those who don't go to vote don't realize the privilege they're giving up. If we don't vote, we have to right to criticize or complain. I, too, struggle with some of the issues on the ballot, and some I don't even understand. I think they deliberately use wording that confuses us. 8-)

Hi Yvonne! Yes, sometimes the people who write the ballots I believe try to confuse us, and some of us are confused! That is when I get out my reading glasses and pour through the information that comes with the ballot! I find out who wrote them and why! Then I see who is for and who is against the propositions that are so many on the ballots!
That way I get to the bottom of the issue and vote my conscience as my guide!
Take care,
Jesse

I'm sure the confusing language is deliberate.

This is a well written and interesting poem. I agree with you about the voting process. Voting is not only an honor and a privilege that many in this world do not have, it is a duty. I was raised to believe that if you don't vote, then you have no right to complain and I firmly believe that. Well said, Jessie.

Thanks, Mary! Your commentary on the right to vote is sheerly brilliant, and another thing...it is an honor and a privilege and I honor my commitment every time I vote! I was raised as well to know that if you want to complain well then you'd better go out and vote!
Thank you for your kind words,
Jesse

A virtual six from me. Strong, meaningful words about a solemn duty to vote. I loved the seriousness and urgency of your duty to not take the act lightly. Well done, my friend.

Thanks, Theodore I respect your reviews as I respect your writing! I am sorry it took so long to respond. A virtual six is better to me because you really mean it!
The duty to vote is a solemn one, my friend. Thank you for your kindness and reviews, unlike all the rest!

A feeling like no other ...patriotism.
It's something each of us should do our due diligence on. Learning the candidates and their personality for the job.
Well written and thought provoking.

Thanks so much, Missy, for the exceptional rating and review. I can tell you are a writer from your review. Very alliterative as well as insightful. Thank you for your kind words of praise for a job well done. If we all felt like you do about voting, we would actually make a difference when it comes time for the next election. Thank you for choosing this one out of my portfolio to review. It means a lot to me that you care.
Have a wonderful day,
Jesse

A wonderful offering, Jesse, that does a great job of noting and highlighting the true weight of filling out that ballot... no matter the election and no matter the items asking for your 'yay' or 'nay'... ;) :) Wish that more folks could 'feel' your words here -- thanx for sharing, sir! ;) Yvette

I smiled reading this, as I had the same predicament the other day - filling in the mail ballot. All those choices - all the judges, who to vote for?
Well, I guess, we did our duty and voted after all (smile).
Liked these lines:
This is both a privilege and a duty,
depending on how I choose to view it,
remembering that taking no action
is an act in and of itself.
Thank you for sharing, I enjoyed this.

You are right. Voters need to make an educated vote after studying all sides of the issues. It is those who don't vote--their right and privilege--that will complain the loudest that 'their' candidate or proposition didn't win. Your poem spells it out nicely--Get Out and Vote. It is a privilege and duty as you wrote. Exercising it should make one feel proud to be in a country where they are given this right.
Respectfully, Jan

This poem, Opening My Ballot, really allows the reader to contemplate the awesome responsibility we are given. Many skip it, then complain. We decide.

What I really like about your well written poem about voting, is its lack of encouraging to vote one way or another. So many put in their political views and that's ok, but you focus on what's really important....voting. Thanks for this positive message.
