No, I'm not offering room and board - I don't take money from friends! Come and visit anytime this virus thing is subdued.

Hi Lisa,
I also watched the Trump/Biden debate with great interest. But it soon became too rude to continue. Biden tried to stay a gentleman, but he was finally drawn into the boorish behavior Trump initiated... with "Clown!" and "Shut up!" Trump just kept jabbing at him, Muhammed Ali against Joe Frasier. The moderator had no control whatsoever. A poor referee. But he didn't stand a chance. He was the ultimate loser in the fiasco. Next time, if there is a next time, he will be able to turn off Trump's microphone. Then, maybe I'll watch it to the end.
When I was in high school, I was the very same as you, Lisa. I was extremely shy, no confidence at all. But teachers made us all give speeches and participate in debates. It was sheer torture. Once, the English teacher picked three of us to follow him after the class was over. Reluctantly, I obeyed. I had no idea what he was doing. He had chosen what he thought were the 3 best short stories to his assigned homework. And suddenly I found myself outside another classroom. He invited us in, and I knew he'd make us read what we had written the night before. (I was in Grade 11 and had just read my production there... to 16 kids. We had the smallest class in the school. But here I was outside the Grade 9 classroom. My best friends were in there... Jim, Clark, Ricky. But also 2 former girlfriends... Susan and Laura. I was sooo mortified! Grade 9 had the biggest class in the school. Over 30!)
I'll come down to New Zealand!
Hugs,
Kimbob

The sad thing is they both have such different agendas and they could have had a great debate - a chance to put their ideas forward. The sad thing is I am a republican and like much of what Trump has done and his agenda for the next four years. Biden has many faults over his long political career - We as Americans could have learned SO much about their agendas and plans. It was horrifying to sit through. America is a wonderful place to live - it is not all crime and rioters - I am glad I am excited for the Republican bench of new faces coming up... sigh. I'd love to visit New Zealand someday... it sounds lovely too.

You mean to tell me you listened to that political wooha between to dogs in a box, LisaMay. I knew that it was a fiasco so I didn't bother to watch those idiots. But I hear it all by word of mouth the next day. When can I go to New Zealand? :)

You are right the debate was indeed a "debacle." How two grown men can't be civil to each other is beyond me. I like the way you put yourself out there. The debate felt as if it was looming over me when I read how it terrified you when you were young. Public speaking was not always my greatest subject either.

You're right, neither of them behaved well, even if Trump did start the name-calling it was disappointing that Biden verbally bit back.

I have always enjoyed a good debate myself. Using the tried and true "rules of proper riposting" a vigorous sharing of ideas from opposing points of view can indeed be exhilarating.
I watched the entire debate and felt that Fox journalist, Chris Wallace who is in fact a superb reporter was deftly dragged into the debate by the president. That sadly will be a black mark on Wallace's substantial career which I am sure he will rue long into the future.
While Trump started the disrespect, Biden followed up with equal derision and name calling. It rather reminded me of parents trying to break up an argument between combative children, and Joe says, "Well Donald started it first."
I wish the POTUS a speedy recovery because there are more debates to be done remotely of course.
A fine op-ed, Lisa. I'm certain many FanStorians will be interested in relocating to New Zealand. :))

Thanks for your review and comments. I agree that debate did none of the 3 participants any favours. Rules of engagement went out the window, but then Trump never seems to follow any rules/code of behaviour anyway, so no surprises there.

Very well written LisaMay. I turned off after watching for about 20 minutes. That's a shame because I quite enjoy watching a good debate.
Apart from your own dear land, other countries are offering to receive refugees from Trump's America. Ghana made the offer during the President's speech to the UN General Assembly.
Stay safe healthy and happy
Blessings Julia

After awhile of watching it, and wincing, I had a bad headache, as if a pecking bird was trying to get out of my head. It's a shame that our country has lost it's basic decency.

This article, A Deplorable Debating Debacle, can be seen by folks far away and make them wonder how the U.S. can walk and chew gum at the same time. I know high school grads I taught who moved to New Zealand to escape this place.

Those readers who never got enthused about speech making or debating will certainly agree with most if not all of these points in this D alliterative titled piece. I don't like debating too much, either, since it sounds as if someone often has to be right rather than kind or honest. It seems politics rarely lends itself to being kind or honest. Thank you for posting more details about the way of life in New Zealand 's politics.
