This is an excellent help for beginners or polishers. It reminds me of my fun teaching it to 6th graders, so of whom read on a 4th grade level. They lived in the wilderness so had a favorite season, Winter. I got them to write about their snowmobile. It was so exciting to see them beam when they got their poem done and could read it to the class. I taught them to tap out the syllables.

Yes, you got my attention. Found this all good advice, particularly 'how to compress', and also entertaining to read.
I could never write haikus until we tackled them as one my writing group's exercises, and then all of a sudden, I got the knack. Now I can't stop. As you say, a good honing exercise.

Always willing to learn, I read it intently as I trust your sound advice, and I was relieved to discover that I mostly already do as you suggest. Writing haiku/5-7-5 is terrific advice. A few years ago I concentrated on that form when I was new to writing and it makes for excellent grounding in pruning unnecessary padding.
