Hi Mark,
There are some paintings that deserve study. My favorite is "Scream" by Norwegian Expressionist artist, Edvard Munch, in 1893. There's an agonizing story there, but we don't know what it is. It doesn't affect the two friends walking away, but the man screaming is in agony. It's all about color and feelings. Whatever is wrong in the screamer's life is evident in the strange colors of water, land, and sky. The two men walking away see earth's natural beauty. It's an amazing painting.
I've never studied the Mona Lisa, but I've heard her eyes follow you around. It's like she's alive, though trapped inside a frame,
"dark eyes scan afar"
I like the pairing of "enigmatic/enamors" ... why is she smiling? what effect does she have on us? she catches us in midstride.
Nicely penned!
Cheers,
Kimbob

    Kim on,

    THANK YOU for this review and your insight about this and another famous painting. I know I had a previous punch where I used the Scream.

    Anyway, your review gave me an all time status accolade. Not something I achieve very often, so your review was a surprise for me.

    Mark

    P.S. I have seen Mona Lisa twice in my life at the Louvre. Her glance really does follow you across the gallery. (-;

This is a good and interesting poem, encased in beautiful and alluring artwork.
It is a bit of an updated take-off on the Mona Lisa.
Your poem is like the beginning of a story. Unfortunately you aren't allowed enough words to see where the story will go. It is like an invitation.
Good luck in the contest.

    Cynthia,

    THANK YOU for your kind remarks and contest wishes. I have been in her presence twice in my life. Both times, mesmerized by her gaze and smile, I surely was not the only person in the gallery that had that feeling. My story limit is usually just 17 syllables (-;

    I was lucky to see her twice in my lifetime. The last time was with my HS graduating senior daughter. Both times, Mona Lisa followed me with her gaze and smile. I was not the only person in the gallery to be mesmerized by her presence. Check out "Oil and Marble" if you are interested in reading about da Vinci and Michelangelo in Florence in the early 1500s.

Mona Lisa is an artistic legend; when painting the Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci had six musicians play for her and installed a musical fountain he invited himself.

    Rosemary,

    From a recently read historical novel, Oil and Marble by Stephanie Storey, I was unaware of this legend. Both da Vinci and Michaelangelo were both in Florence creating their masterpieces in the early 1500s. David was the marble sculpture. I have been at the Louvre twice in my life. Each time, Mona Lisa's smile and gaze enthralled me. And, I was not the only one in the gallery that felt that way!

You captured her inner beauty, her eyes longing for more. I read your poem more than once to capture the full impact of your words. The picture adds to the experience. Good luck in the contest.

    THANKS Carolyn for your nice review of my recent contest post.

    We share a like for 5-7-5s, which is my main writing style. We have a NYC connect since my hometown is Staten Island and I attended HS in Brooklyn.

    Hope to see you around the block in the future.

This 5-7-5, Mona Lisa, has the proper formatting and brings the reader to the face of the painting to experience the antique eyes and the subtle smile of a girl.

Very strong and vivid use of words. The voice it instills is clear and engaging. As the reader, I could already imagine the iconic painting in front of me. Great choice of words.

Dear Mystery Art-Lover,

*smile* I have only ever seen images of this painting - and though I think they are lovely, I CANNOT image the effect or feelings standing in the presence of the real thing. Wow.

Your syllable counts are all just right and this is a unique and creative piece praising a very popular - but overlooked? - piece of art. Thanks and good luck!

    I have been in her presence twice; the last time with my teenage daughter. Her gaze followed me around the gallery. I was not the only one mesmerized by her look and beauty. If interested in reading about da Vinci and Michealangelo in Florence in the early 1500s, consider reading Stephanie Storey?s historical fiction, Oil and Marble - fascinating story of two of the world?s greatest artists.
