Kudos on this wonderful piece.
When someone is hurting whether mentally, physically or spiritually offering up the platitude of Just Cope- Just Deal with it. Is empty advice indeed.
Better delivered with a tender hug, a shed of a tear, or I an I am right here beside you sentiment.
But Just Cope is a cop out!

Your poem, as have many in this contest, has attracted many reviews - which goes to show (just as your poem suggests) we are looking for advice as to how to actually DO IT, not just told to cope. Counsellors don't have the answers at time - they're probably not coping themselves.

I admire your smooth use of rhyming words that adds strength to your theme. I like how you mention that the counselor says to cope, but that is not always easy. This is an excellent entry for the contest.

There's a resignation about the tone here that comes close to despair. We are out on that limb in this poem, with no-one to grasp our hand and pull us back from the brink. The counselor has nothing to offer. Empty words. The world is a disorganized discordant cacaphony we cannot navigate. There is one glimmer of light, in the second stanza, where you hope for smiles from those reading your poems. I have come to the conclusion that without Jesus and the hope of His resurrection, life is a meaningless struggle for existence. Hope is in Christ, in his selfless love for us and the selfless love he would give to us for everyone around us. estory

The main theme for this contest is to work with the word "cope" with "coping with suffering" worked into the entry somehow. I thought that someone with depression who is told only to cope is pretty much suffering. It does leave it open for other hope which comes from Christ but one cannot push that in a contest that promotes suffering eh? Your review is right on though.

should have their licenses revoked! That's like telling a starving person

True insight. There are many therapists out there who are incompetent just as there are many MDs who are also. Thank goodness this based on a fictional situation. Thanks for reviewing.

Thanks for your review and no, this is not written from a biographical point. I am glad that others realize this too as it took me a while to find that not all pieces were from someone's past. Most are fiction and just a point of view. Have a great holiday weekend.

This is a wonderful rhyming poem, with an underlying truth...it's one thing to be told to cope and another to be able to do it. Depression is a mental illness that may require medication and therapy. Thank you for sharing.
