A Treatise on How I Write by EBB

How might EBB have written her sonnets?

This is an interesting perception and take on Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Both your poem and hers, are somewhat sophisticated but also credibly sincere. I appreciate both works of art. This life would not be worth living, if it were not for love. Best wishes.

Thank you so much for sharing my sonnet and your kind praise, victor. It was a challenge to put myself in EBB's shoes, but I had fun writing this. Rod

This is a well done Plutarchan sonnet about the possible inspiration behind EBB's love poems. It shows her love for both her man and her art.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthly.

With this I hear that you use what is around you to inspire the words you write. A lot of writers do that. I myself look for inspiration everywhere.

Thank you, Mia, for sharing my poem. I have always loved EBB?s sonnet and have always wondered HOW she came to write it.

I can tell that the writer is very much in love but there are a few scenes that make this love affair sound mechanical. For example when you said "heart's profile" you made there love sound more like a computer program. Wouldn't have made a difference a hundred years ago, but you got to keep in mind what will be first thing to pop into people's heads here in the digital age.

Thank you, Ben, for sharing my poem. Indeed EBB was very much in love with her husband when she wrote her sonnets. I am sorry you felt that particular phrase sounded mechanical for those living in today?s ?digital age.? I chose words I felt she?who lived in the Victorian Age?would use.

Your opening two lines ... "Oh, darling, how I write I cannot say,
but whence I think of you the words do flow." ... direct the rest of poem nicely!

Best of luck in the How do you write your poetry? contest.

Ironic, author. I just saw a movie on TCM last week. "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" and they barely touched on any of her works. That story, with her father being such a tyrant, amazed me. She must have had to reach into her depths to write the wonderful love poems tha tshe did.

Your poem here is very well done, but of course not a sonnet persay.

Bless you and good luck, Bob

How do I love thee? is as you have said, one of the greatest love poems ever. I enjoyed reading your reply, I'm sure Robert would have had a thrill reading it, too. This is a lovely contest entry, well done and good luck. :) Sandra xx

Hmmmm! Lovely painting of how your love poetry works flow out from your sights and feelings shared with heartthrob. The flow was smooth and I enjoyed it. I guess it was written in quatrains (as in sonnet) if so you may need to consider adding the separating spaces between them. Accept my regards, and good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much, ESOTINE, for sharing my sonnet. There are so many types of sonnets and not all need to separate the stanzas. Rod
