This is such a great image, of the forgotten graves, in the unmown grass. Crumbling and decaying as we drive passed. 'Stand sentry above buried bone.' we get that sense of honor and discipline from a life of sacrifice. estory

I like this rhyming poem to remember the forgotten soldiers that have sacrificing their life for generations of happiness. Yes, the gravestone has decayed but their spirits will forever be member in our hearts.

Well done.

A fine dedication to those brave soldiers who found themselves dying at a young age, not in a blaze of glory, but in a cold and horrifying death through war which was created by others, a poignant write here Annie, love Dolly x

I thought this well-written. I liked the second sentence: "stand sentry above buried bone."
The topic was a good one; it's sad to see things like this.

Yes, it is indeed sad that so many graves are no longer tended. Yet, the total number of graves keeps growing; and, once all who remember a specific grave are also gone, it is not surprising that it becomes abandoned. It would take a veritable army of grave-tenders to handle the myriad multi-plot areas, let alone all the smaller plots. While there is no general solution for this issue, your thoughtful post may prompt some local action in a few places.

Meanwhile, I notice that your rhyme scheme for the first two stanzas is a-a-b-b, but is a-b-b-a in stanza 3. Accordingly, you might consider the following adjustment to make that consistent as a-a-b-b.

We honor all soldiers "so brave";
But many an ancestor's grave,
Without a flag or floral spray,
Now crumbles with mold and decay.

Does this help you? -- Mike

This piece is excellent in every respect. The message conveyed is powerful.
I have seen such cemeteries--such a sad sight. The style/format is appealing, and your lines flow smoothly.

A very good point you bring up in this memorial type poem. There are so many forgotten graves in our countries, that are no longer tended to. I wonder if anyone in Government is a Minister of the Dead? Definitely not.
But perhaps there should be some department that is cognizant of these ancient plots. Well done.

Hello AnnieDawn,
I pray you are doing well these days during this pandemic and chaos in the world. I like your poem, "Forgotten." It's sad that there are many graves with no flowers or the grass cut around it. As you said, families and friends are gone and there's no one to maintain the burial sites. So true, mold and decay have grown around many graves. It's sad. Great photo used to reflect your beautiful message. I really can relate to your message within my family, who most are gone. Nicely written. Well done. Happy future writing:-)

I have noticed that too. As if the ancestors never mattered. It probably is the truth...now. In the old days, when they were buried in those now forgotten graves, they were mourned by their loved ones, just as we now do for our father, mother, child, dear friend or soldier. We mourn and clean their graves, bring flowers and send prayers for those we knew. The generations before that become history, but form no part of our lives anymore.
