So sorry to have missed this, dear Bill. I'm delighted to see your writing recognized with a first place ribbon. I've been sick (kidney infection) and injured, but still writing with my eyes barely functional. Still overcoming one day at a time. Bless you and congratulations.

Thanks Sal, it's really good to hear from you. So sorry to hear about your health issues. I am basically in the same situation. All we can do is hope and pray for the best and as you said take it one day at a time.

When I went to your profile page to check on you I saw that you had a limerick posted, so I immediately brought it up and wrote you a really long review calling you by name and everything then I saved it. I didn't even notice that it was in a blind contest...LOL. So I went back in and did an edit real fast and took your name out...Hey, I must really be getting old.

I'll be praying for you, my friend. We must force ourselves to keep going and never give up until it's time to take our Heavenly flight. God bless you and your family, dear Sal...Bill

"The Ultimate Price", is an extremely well-written and heart-breaking piece. This talented poet's work brought tears to my eyes. To have loved and lost in this way, must be truly unbearable. This is definitely a six.

    Hello Duchess,

Thank you for your wonderful review and rating, I appreciate it very much. Yes, this is truly a sad situation, however according to the historians it has happened many times throughout all the wars.

How have you been lately? It's good to hear from you...Bill

Holy crap! This some depressing stuff I did not expect to find on FanStory. It seemed like a depressing roller coaster that keeps going down. I really liked it though. The way you set everything up and make me think there's a happy ending. We do need to give recognition to fallen vets and their family members left home. Good luck with the contest.

    Hello Ben,

Thank you for your exceptional rating and review, I appreciate it very much. I'm glad it got your attention because my goal was to capture the readers attention and it certainly did. This is a serious situation that the public never hears about.

Have a great weekend my friend...Bill

Your poem brought chills to my body, and tears to my eyes. I really felt Mary's pain and desperation. Yes, when a soldier is killed in action, the family also suffers grievous wounds.

Should "Marine" be capitalized?

One doesn't often hear about suicide among family members of the military killed in action -- I suppose they don't want to advertise it -- but it must happen, more than we know.

    Hello Mary,

Thank you for your exceptional rating and review, I appreciate it very much.

Yes, this is a subject that the public never hears about that's why I decided to write about it. I'm an old Vietnam vet from the sixties and according to the historians this has happened throughout all the wars.

I have always capitalized every branch of service, regardless of which one it is. It just seems like the proper thing to do.

    Have a great weekend Mary...Bill

You're very welcome, Bill. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I always knew that when a member of the military service is killed in action, it's hard on the family members, but this poem portrays it on a much deeper level.
The reason I asked about the capitalization of "Marines" is that "marine" isn't capitalized in your first line, so you might want to adjust that... it's such a beautiful, poignant and important poem and I'm sure more people will be reading it.
I keep thinking that this poem deserves a wider audience than the one you have here on FanStory, as supportive and enthusiastic as we are. This story (regardless of whether it's about an actual person, or representative of many others) needs to be told. And if you do, you might want to include the number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, just in case anyone is having thoughts like that. It's always a good idea.
As you probably realize, I was deeply touched by what you wrote.
Thank you for your service, and may God always bless you. - Mary Kay

Thank you Mary for binging that to my attention (Marine) I don't know how I missed that. Thanks also for the suggestion about the suicide hotline, that is definitely something to think about.

I'm thankful that you enjoyed reading it. I just felt that it was a subject that needed to be put into words. I believe that people pay more attention to the things that they read over the things they listen to.

Have a great weekend and stay safe from the virus. May God bless you and yours...Bill

This was scary. This gave me goosebumps. I guess, some can't deal with the pain of losing their loved ones and decide to join them sooner. It's still a mortal sin to commit suicide - God gave us this life, he is the one that decide when we go.

Extremely moving and powerful, congrats on a very deserved win.

This is a heartbreaking piece of writing. It's true, losing a loved one in war can be devastating but what is more devastating is the effects it can have on the wider family. I thought this was really well written.

I can personally relate to this military wife on many levels.( read "No One Knows" in my portfolio). I was married to Joe, who was in the Army. He made it through a year in Vietnam then was killed by lightning 9 months after being home. I still ended up being an Army widow with a small son to raise on my own. Unlike your soldiers wife, I was fortunate to never actually use that gun! Too many left alone. Thanks for sharing this with us today.

I'm so sorry to hear that about your husband, I'm an old Vietnam vet myself. I can't imagine what you must have went through, especially just after getting him home from that crazy war.

Take care of yourself, my friend...Bill
