Outer Banks pt.3: Driftwood

Hello my friend
Great imagery of waves and sand. Interesting metaphor....of passing time at the beach. I always feel small when I watch the ocean.

Thanks for the excellent review and your encouraging remarks supporting this poem. I am glad you are continueing to enjoy my poetry and that you got exactly what I wanted to say here; a sense of the small individual caught up in the vastness of space and time. estory

'Where other people will watch...and wonder.'
The summation of it all, I think,
is that there isn't one.
As you say, it is at the ocean,
or under the stars, when we truly appreciate
how very, very insignificant we are.
Yet, minus even one of us, the
world changes.
Quite mind-boggling.
I love this ode.
Very impressive and thought provoking.
Blessings...

Thanks for your excellent review and for your perspective on the poem. I like to wax philosophical, in my writing. I think the sea has been a big part of my inspiration, too. It can become a metaphor for so many things. estory

I LOVE the ocean! Beautiful poem!
Comment from Bill Pinder
I like this unique free verse about the experience of being at the beach and feeling like a small piece of the universe that is so much larger and continues before and after us. Thank God that he gives our life meaning. Bill

Thanks for the excellent review and for your wonderful encouraging comments supporting the poem. I am glad that sense of the individual being so small in this vast space of nature and time came through in the poem. Glad you enjoyed it estory

The flow is wonderful read aloud - like waves in tempo! I love the sense of immensity, infinity and impermanence...all aligned with my favorite themes! I enjoyed the subtle weaving of alliteraiton and consonance, especially S sounds, and especially the closing:
All we know is that we were born
into this, that we must carry on
walking these miles of beach
between land and ocean,
until the ocean claims us.
and the penultimate stanza too.
Bravo!

A very well-written poem about the elements of life of which we are all part of while alive and after death the evidence of our existence stay behind as empty shells and whitened bones.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your wonderful encouraging comments supporting the poem. You got that last image of the seashells and the bleached bones on the shore. You were the only one. Ours is a transient existence here in this world. I wanted to show how small we are in some ways in this vast space. estory

You wrote very beautiful lines in here, this is one of my favorite lines because I love to walk in the beach: "what's left behind is the sand,
the crumbled pieces of life..." It was a pleasure to review your work.

I'd have put this in the "Commentary and Philosophy" category; superb reflections that should resonate with readers; at present it is us who are claiming the ocean.

Thanks for the excellent review and for your suggestions. I guess its kind of philosophy of nature. The catagories here could be a bit more specific but generally this is romantic sensibility. estory

I wonder how many are making, have made, or will make this mysterious journey that besets us all. I guess that's why folk chase after their ancestry, trying to opoiece together that meaning, but really, we may meet those ancestors or descendants one day, but the uncertainty is still closing in. Beautifully written my friend, always uncertainty. But I know and up understand circles, well done, blessings, Roy

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your wonderful comments and perspective on the poem. It's always interesting to read all the thoughts and feelings that a poem can dig up in people and when they take flight like this, it is a satisfying experience. estory

Wow, E, this is quite a lovely contemplation in free verse... to take such a reflective look at the seashore what it there and bring it back to the 'meaning' of the times we pass in our lives, where we are, where we are (or should be going).... just really cool! ;) Thanx for sharing! ;) Yvette

A fine poem of Outer Bank recollections. The shore is a healing place for me and I always regret that I don't live there permanently. My best writing has been birthed during my vacation days. There is so much inspiration, and of course, God.
My favorite: "... until the ocean claims us, and then what of all this?"
Sending you my best today as always,.
