This short piece captures the pathos and regret of the the moment on the battlefield. It does so poignantly and succinctly without any superfluous verbiage. This is its strength.

This is a graphic account of the last moments in a soldier's life. The last words he utters are believable. I wondered if you meant 'wasted life' in your title.
