That was a scary experience, and you must have shocked to learn about his record. After all, you had trusted him enough that you trusted him to drive you home and to have dinner with him. Great ending. Understandable that you didn't want to piss him off. Well structured. judi

This resonates with me. A dear man everyone in our small town loved and respected ... a pedophile! I've never really recovered from it. I believe he's still in jail. I wonder though now with Covid19. You use the would "gallantly" which fools the reader at first. And the creepiness of having to be careful at the end. It's unsettling.

You never know! Behind a man's gentlemanly gesture is a brute. I would accept the drink too. It sounds as if he had you in mind for an affair.

Thanks Shari--I don't think he had an ulterior motive--just being his usual nice self. Cheers. LIZ

Wise move Elizabeth. I can see the irony present and the wariness you would experience with him. Can you tell me, whose face was encased in plaster. You say "She thrust her hand at my face, it was encased in plaster" This is confusing to me. Good story though, just need clarification.

Thanks for stopping by. I changed the line that confused you; it now reads: She thrust forth her right hand, which was encased in a plaster cast. Cheers. LIZ

Well , I guess he isn't all bad is if he cares enough to give you water. It just proves you really don't know what evil lurks in the heart of a man. I would hate to get my arm broken for not accepting the water but it sounds like he taste in rape victims runs to the younger side.

Thanks Beth--As far as his taste in victims goes--he is admirably non-discriminatory--age is unimportant (not sure re gender preference) Still, I don't think he had an ulterior motive to give me water--just being his usual nice self. Cheers. LIZ

Ha ha. What a story! It sounds so real I believed it up to the end. I would have accepted the water too. Who in their right mind would want to get on Joe's wrong side?

Indeed. I gave the water to Chuck--he survived, so it wasn't poisoned after all. Cheers. LIZ

Wow. You never really know who someone is or what kind of past they have. It truly is a scary situation for many people. A lot of women are abused in many ways. You've brought that out in your writing. Well done.

Comment from Gloria ....
This is a great Liz, and would've worked well in a short story contest. Such good lead in to what seemed to be a fine fellow turned out to be someone completely the opposite of what he seemed he might be maybe.
I think you made the right choice in just taking the water and then what?

Thanks Gloria--well, I haven't drunk the water--the cap appears intact so I don't think it's poisoned--but just in case...Cheers. LIZ
