This has a full-fledged patriotic tone to it, but also 9 lines seem to be dedicated to family left behind, with a very devoted set of memories. It seems this refers to a veteran writing to or thinking of his beloved during the war in Vietnam. Thank you for posting in plenty of time for Armed Forces Day.

Commando,
I am so sorry for the loss of not knowing your father, and of losing your wife.
Your poem is beautiful, recounting a father's love for his wife and daughter. It is impressive that he was a green beret. We used to sing the song Green Beret in grade school circa 1966, and we were taught about Viet Nam, and how our brave soldiers fought and some died in an Asian country. I was also a patient at the Veteran's hospital in the 80's and met many Nam vets who suffered incredibly painful aftershocks after the war: PTSD, nightmares, and they mourned the loss of their innocence as many served right out of high school.
Thank you for your beautiful poem in your father's honor.
Blessings,
Best wishes,
Cindy

Bill, that was amazing, and I don't have a six left, I'm so sorry. This pours out the feeling of a war vet, and only one who has served could have written this, we all know you did, and that you gave your all for your country. You've written an amazing poem here for the contest, my friend, and I wish you the very best of luck! :)) Sandra xx

A beautiful, heartfelt poem. Well-written too. You used most appropriate wording. I could practically hear your voice speaking sincerely to the love you left behind and your baby. You made me cry!!! But, I'm so tender hearted that happens easily. Maybe the fact that my older brother fought in Viet Nam too. So, your poem brought that time of my life back to me. I was in 6th grade when my brother went to Vietnam. One day I was home alone and the phone rang. It was my brother calling from Viet Nam. We had to talk over a short wave radio which was intimidating to me. As we talked and I tried to hold the tears back, my brother said something about someone I didn't know. Here, they had connected me with some other soldier! They actually went and found my brother and we did get to talk, but it was quite overwhelming for an 11-year-old! I remember calling my mom to tell her that he called but I was crying so hard it took me several minutes to be able to tell her. Your poem brought back some deep memories to me. He passed away a year ago at the age of 72. You're probably the only person I've told this story to and I shared it because it seemed that you would understand more than others would! Take care! Stay safe!

A "SALUTE," Patty! WOW, quiet some review. Thanks for the kind words, and sharing your story. My condolences on the loss of your brother. It's men like him that helped to keep Ol' Glory up the pole. I betcha he is catching fish from the golden pond to help feed God's Angels. I served in Iraq, not Vietnam; yet, I had an older cousin (a Navy Seal) who was killed there. Again, an awesome review. I am submitting you for the reviewers award. Best wishes and God Bless. Thanks! My son went to Iraq three times. He was an intelligence analyst for seven years. Then he went through training for the Border Patrol and became a federal agent. It was really scary because he was stationed in Arizona where it seems the immigrants tried to come in constantly. It was very dangerous. They had just had a new baby and he said one night he was out in the dessert, shots fired, gathering up all these guys and he decided "What in the hell am I doing here! I need a job but my kids need a father!" So, he is now a postman! Thank you also for your service! There aren't words to thank you enough! We used to have a group in the community called Yellow Ribbons, We fundraised and sent packages to the soldiers. Most of us had one or two kids in the military. I always had respect for our military but spending several years sending boxes and we had a Christmas party for the kids of the military and we were all there when anybody had problems. After all of that my respect and admiration grew even stronger. If you look in my portfolio, there are several poems that I wrote about soldiers. thanks again! Take care and God bless! Stay safe and remember 6 FEET APART!! lol

Thank you for your service, Bill. Many men die in that bloody war, because we were young. Many say that it was a war to test new weapons of destruction, that it was our leaders showing off their cojones not caring about the death count. I don't know. This is a good entry for the Rhyming Poem-- War and History contest.

A "SALUTE" too you for thanking me for my service, my friend! I was not in Vietnam; but, in Iraq (Desert Storm) during my commando work. I agree, that it was some of our leaders showing off their cojones; yet, not all. Thanks for the excellent review, kind words and taking the time to read my work. All of which is an honor. Best wishes and God Bless. Respectfully with Admiration, Bill

This is an outstanding poem in the War and History contest. As someone raised in a military family, I understand the heartache involved during war for everyone connected in some way to a service member serving on the front lines, as well as in all the supportive positions requiring great sacrifice, as well. The cost to defend Ol' Glory! has always been high, but the alternative would be too horrible to even try to imagine. Thank you for sharing this entry with a heartfelt and important message.

I regret not having a six. How is one to review something such as this having never experienced it? It is phenomenal. That you are conveying the battle action in the theater itself and writing to your loved one combined, amazing. Simply amazing. Perfection.
