Hi Liz,
I enjoyed your story. Say what you will about Jack-O, he stepped up to the plate and hit a home run when it counted. He didn't hesitate, even taking off his shoes, even knowing he couldn't swim a stroke. Some people are like that. They take action instead of standing there in shock and debating what to do. A hero.
Nicely penned! You need to come back to Fanstory.
Hugs,
Kimbob

    Thankssssss!

Glad you liked the story. I wrote this before the turn of the millennium--my ex prodded me to submit short stories to magazines; neither this nor the other (When Harold Called, posted here in March 2020) were accepted.

I take this to be a bit of satire, about a real person. Although he was obnoxious, it seems he stepped up when it counted, unprepared for what he needed to do. It cost him his life. I like the way you've told it through conversation.

You?re most welcome, Liz. I?m sorry these stories didn?t get accepted to a magazine. It?s usually more about the audience the magazine publishes for. One of my first stories posted here, Seeking a Diagnosis, was published in a women?s memoirs e-book. It had very few reviews on here.

No one is 100 percent bad and no one is 100 percent good. In the heat of that moment Jack O didnt remember that he could not swim and jumped in to save the boy. It is a brilliant piece, in your characteristic humorous style..I loved it
There is a short story by Somerset Maugham about a boorish and overbearing man , titled "Mr.Know All.If time permits you could look it up.Showcases the fact that even the worst appearing person can have a redeeming trait in their personality.
Thanks for sharing hugs.

i know you didn't. Your story just reminded me of Mr KnowAll. it had deep effect on me .I read it when I was quite young and the world was divided into black and white.

I've met characters like Jack-O I'm the past, they are obnoxious to everyone, and nothing ever dents their egos, mine collapses very quickly under duress, fortunately I have a competitive spirit that overcomes that. Well done Liz, thanks for sharing, blessings Roy

This sparkles with your weird sense of humor. :-) Love: he wasn't even born until twenty years past the Age of Enlightenment. All of us have known a person like Jack-O and tried our best to avoid him. What irony that he saved a black child and never learned how to swim. Great ending.

Oh, no! For all his piggishness, Jack had a big heart. I'm betting those people regret the things they said about him now. People like Jack are usually very insecure.

Wonderful story!

Damn. Wish I had a little bit of LaLanne's vitality (from his old tv exercise shows) today. I got the freakin' covid! I, who's a hermit, and only leaves home with a mask and observes all the 6' distancing rules. Went to a family birthday party sans a mask and lavishing hugs. So far, my daughter and law and I are the only ones who contracted it.

About your piece ... I loved it, Liz. You have a unique approach for playwrighting. And it works. I've heard about the racist and other unsavory things about Jack LaLanne. Of course he lived to his nineties, so yours was a beautifully done piece of fiction.

I hope some of this makes sense. I'm not my best.

How are you doing? I emailed you the other day. As to racist stuff from Jack Lalanne, I had no idea.

I remember Jack LaLanne. I find this every interesting. Jack O went in to save a drowning Black child and didn't know how to swim. Makes me wonder if the assumptions about him were really true. Hmm. I hate when I discover I've missed some of your posts. I'm glad I got to read this one.

Jack was a full fledged hero, even being a SOB. You did a great job with this story, and I enjoyed the read. Have a great day. Shirley
