Hello Tootie. This chapter is pretty serious for Commando. Taking an AK-47 round in the chest is pretty serious. It is serious enough to end his service but he pulled through.
There are still enemies today that use children just like they were used in VN. Evil doesn't change much over time.

This chapter has many great moments. It also has it share of sad moments. I like the inclusion of the lyrics to the 'Star Spangled Banner'. I like how the injury Bill received was resolved. When he was back on the battlefield, you wrote his thoughts well. I could tell he was trying to stay positive in light of the life or death dilemma. As always, the conversations back home with family are enlightening.

If I had children walking toward me, and they had packs on their backs, smiling and waving, it would be very difficult to make a decision. (unless you know the situation). I'll wait until the next chapter to see what happens and see what your decision was. I hope they turn and walk the other way!

Another winning chapter. The beauty and pain of this is that we see the dichotomy of war. Of necessity we are there to achieve victory...and yet, as belov'ed as Bill has become throughout this saga here are innocent children who may well be adorable, unwitting weapons of death--anw how does a man deal with the split second decision he must make--and then live with the consequences for the rest of his life if combat training and instinct dictate he annihilate the children? I remember well the moral arguments tossed like bombs between protesters and supporters of our war effort... After all these years I've talked to Viet Nam Vets with haunted eyes who still, to this day, are haunted by what they saw and did there. Another six star chapter--and as ever, I will be anxious to read what happens here. --Karenina

Cathy and Bill, what a great plot! This is my first time reading your work in this story but even still, I can sense the overall direction of the story. A story of war and tragedy in the midst of birth and new life is always a great one. When Billy said, "In order to do so, I shall cover my heart with callouses to protect it from breaking as I walk among the dead with my head hung low. No one will ever truly know why God allows this." The weight of war and mental illness during an era when it would be seen as a weakness really brings light to the mental and physical state of men in the Vietnam war, who may have left unscathed physically but remained vulnerable emotionally and mentally. I truly enjoyed your work. My only critique would be to try and make the breaks a bit smoother. Some of your transitions seemed forced. At times I wasn't sure if Billy was reliving a memory or speaking directly to someone. But overall, nice read!

"Hurrah! The church bells are ringin' for our wedding. What's a matter? Are you sleepin' in?"
-
I'm not sleepin', and I even sent you the money to buy them shoes, so hurry on up and get a move on! Grandma's impatiently waitin' with her broom so we can jump over it, but be careful 'cause if you act up, you know what else she'll do....WHOMP!

AWESOME . . . "I Love It!"

This is delightful, despite its somber scenario. The snappy banter is priceless and the description of the quick-acting injection--and its unfortunate placement!--is so fresh and clever. Cheers. LIZ

Hello Cathy and Bill,
Nice piece in continuation having captivating flow throughout from the beginning to the end with flavor of humor at several places; the entry of the little boy and the girl in the end is working as a HOOK - worth following strategy.
Francis Scott Key's last 4 lines + the conversation of Viet Doctor and Bill, particularly this dialogue, are noteworthy:
"Within a couple of days or so. I'll let you know. However, if you ever call me a 'silly gander' again, then you'll be here forever!"
I'm waiting for Chapter 28.

Hi you two. It's a very good continuation to the story and it goes through some horrible decisions that has to be taken in any war. But it doesn't make it any more easy. Now what? All best. Ulla:)))
