Congratulations on winning the contest with your sad reminiscences in this free verse. I could visualize the depressing room and admired your "hole" metaphor. Your repeating line was quite effective and your notes added more context. Sighs- Joan

Blessings Chrissy and thank you for your six*star rating and review. Yes, it was quite ironic, also that I myself started smoking in college. I have been free now from that habit for 27 years - set free by the grace of God. I think every experience, I've had in life, including this one ha prepared me for my current position as a Pastor in my church and as a high school teacher at our Parochial school.

What a powerful piece of writing! You really movingly communicate the confusion of feelings experienced by the narrator: love, guilt, etc. Thank you for sharing and very well done!

Your poem is very touching. I can only imagine the pain you and he both felt at his illness. I'm sorry you had to experience this. I have some sad memories of my grandparents, but good ones too. I hope you found some joy in knowing him. Excellent poem. Well wishes to you.

Blessings Cindy. Thank you for your excellent review and rating. Yes, I have a few good memories. I remember he loved to wear his Stetson hat whenever he went out. This was before the show Dallas came out but I still thought he looked cool.

This poem is tragically sad but very well done. Your author's notes are stunning. My heart goes out to you.
My husband had throat cancer. His doctors were amazing and he survived it with his voice intact. I can imagine how your experience has affected your life and I must say "God Bless You" you are a treasure.

Blessings Raffaelina, thank you for your excellent review and rating. It is a sad memory in my life, but my new life in Christ Jesus has helped me deal with and overcome all my sad expiriences in life. God bless you.

That is a sad story! Having never heard your grandfather's voice and yet living with him must have been so difficult. Throat cancer is a terrible thing. So it is with all cancers. A well written sad poem.
Best wishes.

He Did Not Share With Me

Hello, my friend,

It sounds like your grandfather was very important to you. I can tell you fell bad about his throat hole...I think it's a very normal thing to feel. But it's clear that you loved him very much and I am sure he loved you too. Your poem is heartfelt and very well crafted. Good job.

Blessings and thank for your excellent review and rating. Yes, I'm sure he loved me as well, but was very frustrated in trying to communicate that love. Eventually, I think he just gave up and stopped trying.

Fathers and daughters relationships can be complicated. I know. I just watched a Tom Hank movie about Mr Rogers. It was excellent. It was about him but also about father son relationship and forgiveness. It's an excellent movie.

This is okay. But, I have enjoyed reading this poem. You could have made it more sadder. It is still good though. Very good work! Thanks for sharing! Good luck in the contest!

This poem fits the prompt. It shows a grandson alone caring for his grandfather. It seems he had throat cancer and cannot talk. I hope
there are recordings of his voice so the boy can share in his grandfather's life as well as his death.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

Blessings and thank you for you excellent review and rating. No there are no recordings of my grandfather's voice because they didn't have recorders readily available back then like they do today - this took place in the mid 60's . If there is a recording somewhere, I never heard of it.
reply by dragonpoet on 14-Apr-2020
You're welcome. No recorders weren't prvevlent then, Not like in the mid to late 70s when I used cassettes.
    Have a great day

I like that this is told as a story, and is really descriptive and builds the characters well. It works as a poem I think, and this adds to the ideas you are trying to tell. Best of luck in the contest.

Blessings and thank you for your excellent review and rating. This is an actual event in my life concerning my grandfather. I am writing of it 60 years after and was trying to convey my sad memories of never having heard his voice.
