I quit making resolutions years ago. I always forgot to keep them. In fact, I don't know anyone who has managed to keep a resolution all year. When I did make one, it hardly lasted past noon. Happy New Year!

Happy 2023, Yvonne. This was printed in my local paper three years ago--I'd sent it to the editor as a year-end thank-you gift for his having printed several of my letters over the prior months--I was floored to see it appear when publication resumed mid-January.

"Unresolved" Indeed! I read somewhere that a full two-thirds of resolutions are discarded within fourteen dayd! Therefore I decree a revolution against resolutions!

How great this was published in your local paper!

I've morphed to a much more general daily thought to "try to do better..."

Much more satisfying!

Alas, such vague resolutions tend to devolve to resignation as to one's ever-encroaching slothfulness. HELLO!

That accurately describes my every former resolution ...and none result!

I quit making New Year's resolutions years ago. I was never any good at keeping a single one, so why go through the pretense? I just bumble along doing the best I can and hope I get it right sometimes. Happy New Year!

I can see what it was reprinted. It's a good one.

Resolutions are what women do when they try to force themselves to do something they don't want to do. And I've learned from experience to never try to force a woman to do anything. And as for me, they keep their fingers crossed on everything. LOL. Wishing you the Happiest and Healthiest New Year ever!

This work has reached the exceptional level

By the time I think of a resolution I want to make, it is February, so I do not bother.
I love the story. It brought back memories of Jordan Marsh, Thom McAn, Robert Hall, and shopping in Central Square, Cambridge. I believe it was McAn's store that had a gimmick of ex-raying our feet.
A clever and fun read.
Happy New Year.
Mary

I am still -- and have been, as long as I can remember -- a New Year's Resoluctionary. I take it seriously, and fully believe I will succeed in my resolutions. To me there's magic in the belief that I can and will achieve something over a period of time ... even when most of my resolutions bit the dust. One that didn't was studying Spanish for at least an hour a day. I have not missed a solitary day for 1087 consecutive (redundant) days. Sometime in January, I will celebrate my three full years of study. BTW, I still can't speak it and only get the gist of what I see and hear on Spanish T.V. Someday, though, I will turn the corner into understanding. The point is, I would never have completed 1087 days unless I had solidly resolved it.

But as far as continuing life with a modicum of self-satisfaction, probably not doing the busy work of making New Year's resolutions makes sense.

Have a happy, happy, healthy, wealthy New year!

Jay

I never make New Year resolutions either. I found out many years ago, "I don't keep resolutions." It doesn't matter what they are. You did a great job with your writing. Have a great evening and an even greater New Year. Shirley

And, I might add, you'll never castigate yourself for breaking said resolution. I must admit, I gave up making resolutions many years ago, that my resolve didn't match the Grand Canyon sized mouth that made it. There's only one resolution I've kept, I haven't drank, smoked or gambled, (apart from driving) i made, but not even at mew years. One should resolve never to regret yesterday, forgive yourself, one can always start again. HNY Liz, blessings Roy

Wow. Your story I found interesting, but it also brought back memories of shopping when I was a child-
Shopping Center,
Thom McAn,
Gimbels,
Bambergers (now Macys)
Robert Hall
EJ Korvette
Two Guys
Hahnes

Just to name a few of the stores that are long gone.

Nicely done.
Cheers. John

Thank you for reposting this. I hate that I missed so many of your posts. It was not on purpose. LOL I have no idea what my New Year's resolution will be, so I probably won't make one and that's a good thing. LOL
