Dear Carol, when I read your work I am so grateful that I fanned you. The talent you have is inborn. It can't be taught.
It seems that you're drawn to nature as your Muse. Indeed it is an inexhaustible pool of inspiration. In your poem, the night bird comes to you as a kindred spirit. Night owl, that's what I remember as a description of those who are about in the night watches.
Entrancing free verse.

Yes, nature is my very favorite thing, and you so sweet to comment the way you have. Thank you so much, you put a much needed smile on my face this (late) evening!

I think you can safely assume that any time you see a five star rating from me, it's because I don't have a six. What a profoundly pensive, introspective, brilliantly-written, poem you've created here.
I can so relate to your straightforward line, "If only I could go back and be better than I was", and to all of the more poetic expressions of that sentiment expressed here - I particularly like the thought of a careful God doing some body (and soul) work on our damaged chassis.
And what a poignant closing stanza. We are all in need of a little more redemption - some folks keep looking and that makes all the difference.
I love reading your poetry.

Thank you so much, Mark, it honestly does my soul good to read your reviews. I think I must write the best poems when I am a bit depressed, lol. I thank you for your always kind reviews, and your understanding,
Carol

Contemplations we have with ourselves in the hours alone... funny how the oddest things move our thoughts, isn't it? :) A lovely offering, Carol, that reflects those times we find ourselves wondering what that next should be... you are so good at really finding that still, small place in all of us and setting up a resonance there that allows the voice there to be heard... if for no other reason but acknowledgement. Beautiful, my lady - just beautiful. Thanx for that... :) ;) ;) Yvette

This poem is actually a true account of a break I took at work last week, walking around the parking lot at night when I saw the owl. I love owls! They have a distinct appearance when flying, which is why I used the word blunt :))

some days I wish for second chances--I wish for those practically every day. "If only I could go back and be a better person" how true .This poem has resonated very well with me. This could be me writing the same feelings....Loved it

Certain things would be done differently - just believing in myself more, especially when I was young. Thank you so much for reading and understanding!

I appreciated your minimalist style while sharing your reflections about life. I appreciated your references to several birds and your hopeful conclusion. Sighs- Joan

Hi Carol. Great job with this well described poem. I think we all have this wish:
If only I could go back
and be better than I was
I wonder if just making the wish, realizing we could have done better, is a sort of redemption in itself.

I think you are absolutely right, thank you!! Yes, the realization is a type of redemption. It's the best we've got anyway! :))

Hello Carol,
How I wish I had six stars to reward you for this stellar poetic offering.
It is rich in visual and emotive imagery. But most of all, it resonates with me:
yet the missteps still hurt
after all these years
some days I wish for second chances
~~~~
There haven't been many, but the one or two still visit now and then...
So moving...
Thank you for sharing!
I sometimes wonder if second chances would go wrong anyway. Forge ahead, and intend to do better. Thank you so much for this great review :))
Hello, ciliverde,
When I write your name, I always think of chiliverde. lol
I like your free verse...this poetic form is my favorite. As I was reading it was easy to visualize the story behind the poem. Well done.
So true that even though the important thing is to keep trying and move ahead, it does hurt when you fall. Thank you for letting us admit that!
I think we all want to be better and have those moments when we think, "if only I could go back and change___"
I love that you close with wanting a glimpse of the owl--representing wisdom, I assume.
I just like owls, lol. But yes, I think going back to the owl ties into wisdom, and maybe just the wisdom of appreciating the beauty that appears in our lives. Almost a childlike love of the natural world...
Hi Carol. I absolutely love this free verse of the bird's wings showing up against the night sky. When it turned out to be an owl, I was sold. It is my favorite birds, and most nights I listen to its hoot. I live in the mountain. Ulla:)))
