Pfff. That is some loaded stuff. I felt angry alongside the mom Susan then I felt in a way sympathetic to the dad. I understood his reasoning. Dare I say agree with him until I read Cindy her perspective. She is a human being no matter what and deserves a life, but at what cost. This captures the abortion rights and wrongs perfectly.

Sorry for the delay, George--trying to catch up here! I'm pleased you felt this piece presented all sides fairly. I didn't think I conveyed a balanced view considering where my sympathies lie--but I try to step back and let my people speak for themselves. Cheers. LIZ

A very well written script.
It is filled with a beautiful story of love and pure devotion to a child of down syndrome.
So much heart in the piece.
Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting reading and you've captured the speech patterns well I think. The father certainly comes over as callous and uncaring. I think this would work well as three monologues on stage. Well done.

Thanks Judy. For the sake of "fairness," I let the father speak his piece--which didn't help his case any, for sure. Nick the Dick indeed!

Great story. The mother did right and taught Cindy in a most positive way. Children are a blessing from the Lord and if we can look at this situation that way, then everything will work out well like it did with Cindy.

This script was unsettling. I could easily understand where each character was coming from. Hearing each's thoughts is interesting and there is plenty of conflict. I think you've done well to give Susan, Nick, and Cindy unique voices.

Thank you Rod. I let each take the stage in turn--then I sit back and take dictation. I never fail to be surprised by what they say! Cheers. LIZ

I like the way you've structured this, in three episodes, and from three different perspectives. Abortion to me isn't really an option, one has to make a stance as to what one believes, whether the foetus is a "real" person or not, or it's OK, I think it is, but then... and then if the child is handicapped or not, Difficult decision, but we never had to make that choice, we had two healthy girls. Beautifully written, excellent job, blessings, Roy

I loved it. I thought you dove right into controversy, and asked some tough questions, and this came off boiling over with emotion. I loved how you told the story in all three facets, from the mother's point of view, the man's, and the child's. We come away from the detailed, stream of consciousness narratives of each with a strong sense of the mother's determination to love her baby, no matter what; the father's rationalization of his attempts to divest himself of parental responsibility, and the powerful assertions of the baby herself, and her challenged, but valid life. We see all the arguments here, to end challenged pregnancies to 'protect the integrity of the health care system' or 'convenience', but this comes off as powerfully pro-life, as we see Cindy articulating her life despite all the labels placed on her. One of the best pieces I have read on Fanstory in a long time. estory

To begin nick is an ass! A child is a child, a special child is a challenge and a reward. The reward of the love from a child is worth all the challenges.

    Geee---Rikki---hmmm, your name sounds familiar...
Indeed, I agree that Nick sure is a...well, it is the D-word that came to Susan's mind (via mine). It would be a challenge indeed to make Nick likeable--what does comes easily is to just let him run his eloquent mouth and thus justify himself so convincingly (to himself, that is). Cheers. LIZ

Wow! Tough choice to make. You packed a lot of medical information into these three monologues. Hurrah for Susan, but I understand Nick's point of view. Cindy's first three lines knocked me off my feet until the fourth line when I realized it wasn't her thoughts, just the mean kids who didn't show compassion.
Fortunately, today's generation is more accepting and helping children with Down's Syndrome thanks to the media. Remember the one in the popular Glee series?

Shari--you are quick! So glad you liked this piece. I'm pleased you can understand both viewpoints. I was tempted call the don't-wannabe-daddy "Nick with a capital D" but I refrained! Cheers. LIZ
