What a grand life story! I laughed aloud at the surprise ending. The poor old watch was your war buddy and did not appreciate a young whippersnapper thinking he was good enough to wear it. The watch tried for days to put up with all the youthful shenanigans and just couldn't so he died honorably in pieces. Great post!

Nice story! I like how you gave snippets of the various areas of travel. I live in Colorado Springs, so I hear of the many moves of the military. Good luck in the contest!

Tami thank you very much for reading my story. Your comments are inspiring and your stars are wonderful. Two of my children were born in El Paso County, Colorado and three of them were born in El Paso County, Texas. I lived there for five years and in Fort Collins for three.

A moving and interesting story. The spirit of that watch really watch over you during your career.
I was given a Timex or two growing up and I loved those watches too. I think the slogan for the watch back then was, "they take a lickin' and keep on tickin'." And that was certainly true from my experience. It was a working man's watch, reliable dependable, resilient. My other watches were just jewelry and I had to be careful with them.
I wished your son, could have experienced the watch same way you did. This was a great story. And thank you for your service.

I enjoyed reading your contest entry. I like the constant of including the watch. It seems that it was indestructible when it counted, but, lived out its life once you were retired. I had a Timex as my first watch and loved it. Thanks for sharing. Respectfully, Jan

This is quite a good story. It is very well written. It is almost as if the watch knew you weren't wearing it anymore and decided it was only for you. It is funny how things go sometime. You have had a busy life in the military. I am happy you are retired and home. You have led quite an action packed life.
Good luck to you in the contest.

Aww, that watch didn't want to belong to anyone but you! What a life time that timex had. My first watch was a Timex, and like yours, I never had any trouble with it. And I remember buying one for my mum for mothers day. Such memories those old watches gave us, yours deserved a medal for all it went through. Such a shame it ended the way it did! Well done, this was a lovely story. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

First of all I want to say thank you for sharing this story and second I want to tell you that I want to thank you for giving me freedom, for serving our country, giving of yourself and being a friend.
NOw to the piece, it is excellently written and so amazing, but you have to remember, they say our watches have to align themselves with out electrical body imput, yours was set to you. LOL

I love this story. That faithful Timex had been with you through everything. It withstood the harshest conditions and made it across the finish line to retirement. I guess when your son chose it out of a stack of your watches, it had reached its limit. The seemingly indestructible watch gave up the ghost. Well it was a good one while it lasted. I would have to keep the pieces of it though. Thanks for sharing this informative, engaging, inspirational, and well written work. Well done!

Your Timex was certainly very tough but I guess all those years of hard service had weakened it perhaps.

I've made a few suggestions but feel free to ignore them if you want:

with nine months in between in Germany near the Czechoslovakian Border - I think 'border' should be lower case.

Our base was in the Northern Bavarian City of Aschaffenburg, Germany - I'm not sure about the capital for 'northern'

In 1980, I had enough, the Army wouldn't transfer me to Texas - period after 'enough'

I retired with almost twenty-seven years of Honorable service - lower case for 'honourable'

It was like my issued uniforms, I could keep it. - period after 'uniforms'

Pick one out," said I, good old dad. - period after 'I'

I thought that was an excellent choice, it was indestructible - period after 'choice'

I love your story, Henry. You have had quite the life. I'm sure you could have told many fascinating stories about your life in the Army. (And I hope you do) Instead, you chose to focus on a cheap old Timex watch. That was sheer genius. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story, but especially your ending.
