You certainly know about Euphemisms. I think I am a prude in an old ladies skin. Some of them I can't stand. I prefer the straight forward approach, and that way there is never any question about what is being talked about. You did a good job. Have a wonderful day. Shirley

Nice to see you, Shirley! I relished both the research and the writing. It took an unexpected direction right from the start, when I realized the euphemism I cited was a euphemism for a another ... etc. So glad you enjoyed the piece. The PC Police have gone overboard--just when you get used to their latest declaration, they change it. Cheers. LIZ

As to coming back ... perhaps in a year or so, provided I can fully commit to fans on both sites.

This is quite a list, but I thought of a couple others that I don't think you listed:
domestic engineer = housewife
special needs children or adults = handicapped physically or handicapped.

I was familiar with most of the terms. But
donkey dick was a new one and made me laugh.
My friend Jonathan came up with one for diarrhea. He calls mess the 'hershey squirts'.

Excellent post. I see it was selected as a story of the month entry. Congrats for that. You certainly covered a lot of common euphemisms. I believe we're so accustomed to using them that they just come naturally. In today's culture, we're so sensitive to words, you have to be careful. If you choose to call a person "differently abled," that really doesn't change his condition. It might make you more comfortable to say it. Lots to think about in this. judi

Another one of your poems that I missed the first time around, so sorry. Thank you for re-posting it. I am curious about 'big-boned', because I have known people who were not fat, or overweight, but actually had large bones and would never be considered skinny. I have a son like that. He's doesn't have an ounce of fat on him. He's very muscular, but will never be skinny. He has a large wrist measurement, too.

Thanks for sharing the plethora of euphemisms we use everyday and some we used a long time ago but no more. I doubt anyone powders their nose anymore. Lol. Lots of fun with this!! You taught me a couple of new ones.

Hello Liz,
I have to say that I especially enjoyed the F words. Perhaps that speaks to my spiritually challenged character at times. I wonder if the PC police have to stop and think before they speak or if they are so programmed that it just comes natural. If they get really mad, do they speak what is really on their minds or not? I gather that you tell it like it is, I don't need a PC dictionary if we're having a conversation? You're so funny gal. Thanks for sharing this.
Have a blessed evening.
Tom

This is a cumbersome confusing piece. (it sucks)
It is abjectly obfuscating. (it sucks)
Are you on drugs? (it sucks)
This a well thought out piece (it sucks, maybe)
You have exposed the ridiculousness of PC
(sucks if you are PC)
Six StoryLand stars for the obvious. (story doesn't suck)

Well, Liz, I'd say you covered all the bases.
You hit the nail on the head.
Your examples speak for themselves.
Maybe mine are puns rather than what you asked for.
Some of the examples from the sources listed were gross.
However, most people in today's world would agree they've
heard them tons of times and look the other way.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Hi, Liz.

As a Lingo-phile I enjoyed your voyage around euphemisms (and their various cousins). I can see you had a lot of fun with this as well as investing in a mountain of research for your notes.

Huge topic of course and you could even write a scribe about a particular word/meaning. 'die' would be a perfect example - i think it gets a mention, although you may have only scratched the surface - passed away, kicked the bucket, bought the farm, gone to eternal rest etc. You'd think we had enough words for it, but just the other day I came acrosss a new one in a genealogy site that mentioned the dates different people had 'transitioned.'

Steve
