Whoa...Yvette,
This flash fiction is a "gut puncher." And yet, that is just how cancer robs one of the simple joys of everyday living. My husband just found out that he has to have minor surgery, and the moment we told our children, there were tears. I cannot imagine if...
One little edit suggested for the following:
I'm holding on for all of them when really? (,) I'm just ready to let go.
No more cancer stories... okay? :)
Best Wishes!

I promise... no more. It was a long day (and the cusp of early Spring...not good for me) when this contest came up and you know I love the shorties for the end of a day.... SORRY!! No more!! Take care out there and find your sunshine smile!! ;) :)

Good luck with this prompt. Most people never think of the mental suffering of the patient goes through. They are conflicted wanting to live and praying to die especially when they reach the hospice stage.

Thanx for the good luck on this one, Rikki! ;) This was one of those 'fast contests' that are just perfect for a teacher: doesn't take long and it allows the imagination to wander... You take care of you, sir, and have a wonderful Wednesday tomorrow!! ;) :) Yvette

My Wednesday will be filled with respiratory therapy.

Why do we wait until the last days to become a prisoner of life? We should cherish it every day. What a wonderfully written story and the picture is amazing.
Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day and God bless.

It's said that the dying keep themselves living for the living. My son, at age 39, had about two months to go with his terminal brain cancer, so said the doctor after his seven year struggle. Trains were an important memory for us. On my last visit with him, as he lay motionless, I noticed his train set on the windowsill that he was facing. I read a Shel Silverstein poem about trains to him, then said, to him' "There's the train, Ian. Go ahead and take the train." He passed away that night.

It must feel like being a prisoner of life, trapped in a painfilled body, unable to live the life you once enjoyed. Cancer has destroyed so many families, the carers give so much while trying to put up a positive front and it's not easy, and I think the patient can see right through us. This is an excellent flash fiction story, well done! Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

My father was diagnosed on Thursday night died Tuesday morning. He said he saw the lady in the white shirt and no point to let it draw out. This is a creative way to wonder what it is we can accomplish when we want it to be the end or it is even if we don't want it to be. In some strange way I can relate. Good luck. xoxo Kiwi

Thank you for your review and for sharing a tiny piece of your heart....

Too sad, just way too sad because it is SO true (and so well-written). I just had grim news of a friend who's been battling for a very long time and now has had his cancer spread to his lungs -- stage four. I lost my sister to it, my maternal grandmother, and I am a cancer survivor.
So you know this resonates with me. Good luck in the contest. Excellent choice of title, BTW...

This is a well-written story for the prisoner story contest. Your choice of a prison being cancer is unique and clever. I have never had cancer, but I can imagine it would be like living in a prison of uncertainty. Great job! Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful day.

This is a very moving write and the angst and tension are well portrayed with the sickness and the incessant phone calls. Good set up and play on words... prisoner of life. I wish you luck.

This is a strong contender in the prisoner poetry contest telling a sad and haunting story, a reality for some famlilies. I wish you luck in the contest.
