Another nice job with the sonnet format, on a different kind of subject; in this case, mood. I think you created a haunting, moody landscape here, with these images of raindrops dripping from the pine trees, very mournful. There's a nice subdued voice to go with it and provide the framework for this theme. We almost hear those voices from the past, possibly some battlefield, in the rain, haunting the narrator, and his own efforts at reconciliation, at finding peace with this past. Here the surrounding landscape becomes a stage for this movement along with being a symbol of that mood. estory

The pain of your grief is palpable in your poem. The photo you used is a perfect companion to this piece. You have a wonderful command of poetic language as when you describe the cathedral ed elms. I really enjoyed reading this and sympathize with your loss. I would have given six stars but don't have that available at this time.

An excellent image-poem - showing the contemplation observed by a walk through a dark wood, with a dog perhaps. I like the "elms form a cathedral" - often, when driving through overhanging trees, it feels like a cathedral - or is comforting.

Rod: I relate to your nature walks to destress and let go of emotions.
God hears you and heals you. Keep walking. I like the leaves of elms
cathedral overhead and the images you paint with words. I hope this heals hearts. flylikeaneagle

Hello Rod. The first two stanzas set the mood for the poem and the act of seeking solace from a deeply felt loss. In the third stanza I saw some self doubt and even guilt regarding the loss. I like the line, "Yet Nature never censures or condemns" which seems to add a little comfort. The resolve comes at last in just sitting quietly... alone.

Very well written.
Robert

Your poem makes me think of the song Green Cathedral by Carl Hahn. I especially love this line: "The limbs of elms cathedraled overhead
create a silent sanctuary" I'd never heard or read that use of the word cathedral before. It really painted a picture for me. You must have been a fantastic English teacher.

I am so delighted you enjoyed my diction in FINDING PEACE, Susan, and I am quite flattered that you thought I was a fantastic English teacher. I did enjoy teaching students how to write poetry. Indeed, without bragging, I was one of the few in my department who could SHOW them how to write. Rod

You convey the overwrought heart very clearly in this emotional poem, Rod. The stanzas carry the feelings of restlessness, spiritual sanctuary within nature, the angst of guilt, then comfort and peace. A very worthy winner of the contest.

I felt and related to every line. Your poem is moving, and sad. But not every poem has a happy theme. You did well writing on this subject. Any poem that can move me gets a thumbs up. Well done.

I like this and the message conveyed in it. When one has lost a loved one, they do seek out places to meditate and reflect sometimes on what once was. Life seems to have an empty space where that loved one occupied. Through it all, we must soldier on until we're reunited with that lost love. Thanks for sharing this inspirational and well written work. Well done!
