It's best to keep one's mouth shut unless one is perfect, and has some sort of licence to judge others, but then no one has in reality, so it's not an issue, but it's good to get it off one's chest, so take some solace, that I'm on your side, I know how wise you are. Beautifully written Carol, blessings, Roy

Well done

Words spoken can linger for years if we let their barbs penetrate... and, you know, even if we move on and, as you say, accept, they will forever echo when our mind is confronted with face of the speaker. I can so relate to your wonderfully crafted words here, Carol - my MIL said many hurtful things those first few years of our marriage that, to this day thirty years on, still give me pause when faced with any considerations of interactions with her/them. Wee done, my friend, and know that 'I hear you'... Yvette

Hello Carol, this is really well written - a perfect free verse that absolutely shows how hurtful words can be. They can prey on the mind. But, unlike the written word, they can be washed away if we just accept AND forget. Another good one from you. You excel at free verse. Love Dorothy xx

I am sorry this poem was provoked by the hurtful remark by a family member. Your words are quite evocative and I admired your "raindrops" analogy. Sighs- Joan

It can be hard to shake off harsh words. The rain and the window pane is an excellent metaphor and certain nay creates vivid imagery and adds to the dreary mood of the situation.

I'm just trying to let it be her problem. And the writing of this helped! Thanks, Debi,

Hello Carol. I enjoyed your free verse immensely and think your flow and word choices are superb. I would mention that I did not understand the point in the last line... but breathing into acceptance. Just an observation.

In Yoga or meditation, breathing deeply is calming, and helps with acceptance of...many things. That's where I was going :))

Excellent free verse, Carol. Wouldn't it be nice if our ability to shed a vicious word or action like raindrops off window glass. Your adept use of metaphor illustrates a universal truth with a ton of emotion.
Excellent write that I'm sure many can relate to.

I think that people who make comments like that have no idea how much they offend you. They are clueless, otherwise wouldn't make the comments in the first place,

Your words resonate with me. Strangely enough, an in-law said something to me recently that made me boil with anger, resentment, embarrassment... I felt debased by her comment. Humiliated.
I don't believe she meant to hurt my feelings, well, maybe a little. I think she just lacks empathy.
Reading your poem, I relived those moments.
Excellent imagery in your write. You speak of "breathing into acceptance." But I believe expressing your feelings, at least in this poem, is just as much a necessary step to healing. Sending you positive vibes, Carol.
I hope to God I never hurt anyone in this way. And if I did, I beg forgiveness.
Blessings Julia

Hi Julia, thanks for reading, and how funny you're going through the same thing. My husband and I kind of decided, just let her live with what she said. Now it's her move if she wants to see us again. I kept going over and over in my mind what to say to her, and finally thought, nothing works. Saying something angry wouldn't help me anyway, in the end :))

I love the calm that you are left with after this piece is over. It's like taking a cleansing breath. You can't control what others say or do and no matter how hard you try there are times it just sticks with you. The only way to get over it is to accept that things are what they are.

Yes, that's it exactly! Just take deep breaths and let her BE the hurtful comments she makes. Other people (including her son) find her difficult too.
Thanks, Mia,
Carol

In laws are so difficult sometimes. Even your own family, lol. I never have reacted well to criticism, and this is no exception. THanks for reading!
