A poetic embodiment of the old saw that you can't ever go back. It's one of those sad themes in life and in literature, so sometimes it's better not to try.

This leads me to think about back home where I grew up. When I am able to make it home there is so much I do not recognize. Things are so different that it's like a whole other place.

Things weren't different, but smaller and more worn down. It was kind of sad. Thanks for the read and review.

Hello mystery writer. The 5-7-5 poem is excellent. It's a shame what is happened to many areas and neighborhoods in America. Good luck in the contest.

I did this same thing not to long ago. My sister sent me pictures of where we use to live when we were children. It was really surprising, but, I remembered those places surprisingly. They had not really changed that much. Thanks for sharing this well written back down memory lane work. Well done!

Actually, it was more like three decades. It was a bit of sadness, but I'm glad we did it. Thanks for the read and comment.

I feel your pain - it is shocking how disrespectful of people and property that modern times have become. I hate vandalism and ugly tagging. Neighbourhoods change - last time I drove past my old family home back in Canberra (I live in NZ now) the wrecker's ball was demolishing it to build apartments. It felt like an assault on my very being. I think desecration is probably worse than demolition to built something new.

I agree with you 100%. It really made me feel sad.

You have made excellent use of all of your syllables in this piece--
nostalgic for the speaker, who finds a disappointing scene. Some neighborhoods are allowed to become very run down--happens everywhere.

Unfortunately, that sure is true. So sad. Thanks for the read and review.
Comment from Ogden
The old expression comes to mind, "You can't go home again." It's not always true, but things do change over time, and they often are disappointing (your defaced childhood home, for example).
Good luck in the contest!

I know, everything has changed. They're talking about closing my old school because there are so few kids there now. It's the same in a lot of mature neighborhoods. Some have really gone to seed. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks for the read, review and comment. Yes, it was really a sad experience.
Comment from Susan Larson
This experience can be so different for so many people. My childhood neighborhoods was all newly built 800 square foot cracker boxes on a dirt street. When I took my kids back 30 years later, most people had added on rooms, raised the roofs, built garages, added lush landscaping and the paved street was lined with sidewalks and trees. They wanted to move there! Thanks for the memory! You never know what people are going to get out of what you write!
