This is a fascinating taste of a magical fantasy world where gnomes and rose bushes come alive.
You set the stage with fine descriptive passages such as: 'There was a desk against another wall complete with some sort of eerily luminescent vine growing out of the top drawer. The vine had crept along most of the wall there. Here and there, were small, disorganized piles of equipment, bags, and other assorted junk'.
The dialogue is realistic and flows smoothly.

This is a fascinating taste of a magical fantasy world where gnomes and rose bushes come alive.

The vine had crept along most of the wall there. Here and there, were small, disorganized piles of equipment, bags, and other assorted junk'.
The dialogue is realistic and flows smoothly.

LOL!!! ;) :) Yeah, the contest is up for voting now and there's another one at the end of the month -- guess they're trying to 'speed us up' -- so, see? computer's been in the hospital, but she's all better now.
My angel girl granddaughter, Katya is coming tomorrow, late, and has to leave fri aft., so short visit, but am so happy to have her at all, she stays so busy

Just a thought, but maybe I'd consider changing "any light at all" to something more specific -- light bulb?/source of light?

A very well-written chapter. It seems the plants accept Nicholas as the new gardener and they work together tho make his job and little easier when the shed lightsome up without a light bulb.
