I so agree with this poem. I find it disheartening to see the number of parents who not only allow their children to stay on techy toys while their elders are speaking to them, but the number of parents doing the same. It seems none can take five minutes to show respect for their elders these days. Something I believe causes many of our elders to give up on life. You see it in person, on the television, in movies, on the internet...more and more disrespect to those who could teach youth more about life than any techy toy. Of course, techy toy addiction brings profits to another instead of life lessons to our youth on how not to be ripped off and lose their money.

This is so deep and insightful. It is also sad with the truth that is revealed in your words and story it tells. So many times I saw myself nodding my head and saying, yes, yes, yes. So true, from watching re-runs on TV, to retreating into one's room with one's memories and being alone in a crowd where there seems to be no one around that understands. Thank you for this reminder of how others can feel and how we might understand better. Loren

well, thank you for your kind comments. Much appreciated!
I never had grandparents, sadly. They all died either before I was born or shortly after, so I never had that special relationship. I have one grandchild - my heart string - a sophomore at UT who calls me just about every day, bless her heart.
    Thanks again.

It is sad that families do not engage with the elderly and train up their children with better respect. Perhaps their loneliness would not appear to be such if we as a society paid more attention to making their lives better and spent more time with them.

Your poem about loneliness points out so well that it is possible to be lonely in a crowd if one is on a different time frame with different memories. Younger ones need more patience and understanding when around the older generation.

    thanks!!! and bravo for you!
I wish you'd come to American and teach our young people - many parents are abdicating their jobs.

I am not a teacher or a parent, but I certainly have opinions about both!

    I don't understand. Did I offend you?
reply by LisaMay on 21-Jul-2019
Oh no not at all. I never take offence at things. What I meant was that as I don't have children myself, and as I am not a teacher, (and as I am not American either) I would probably not be a good choice to teach other people's kids!

Thanks for that interesting and insightful read! As a young person, I admit sometimes I find it difficult to put myself in the shoes of the elderly. I feel this yearning for their wisdom and yet at the same time I feel like there is a communication barrier. Western culture encourages a lack of respect between the generations I think. Good luck with the competition!

thanks for your insightful comments. I think you're right, but the sad thing, to me, is our western culture didn't used to have a lack of respect for the aging. Anyway, thank you very much for your good wishes.

The past is often a comfortable place to be, it is safe and predictable, the world becomes too much with its ever changing world and particularly for the elderly, your poem here is delivered with compassion and honesty, love Dolly x

    thanks, Dolly.
One gal said she thought our culture lacked kindness to the elderly. I think that has evolved along with lack of civility. adults and children USED TO be kind to them and people with decent upbringing still are.

Your poem is very touching, and oh so true,
capturing a common example of the kinds of thoughts filling the minds of lonely old people. You chose a perfect illustration, too.

Writer, you have captured the age of man where there is a long period of aloneness and often it is wrought with memory losses. A good write and a great photo to capture the reader. Good Success in the contest.

Grandpa is sometime lonely, he feels loneliness, though he keeps on reminiscing, speaking his old stories to kinfolk, but all are busy in doing their activities, none is so careful to listen to his stories; well said, well done. Liked and enjoyed the read. Write-Inspire --DR ALCREATOR
