I am on this site infrequently these days, so hence the delayed read and review of this piece.
This really deserves a six. Kids know how to cut to the chase and they keep us honest.
What your son said to you I could have easily seen my son saying to me. I ended up quitting smoking because of his crusade against it. He would go into my purse, find my cigarettes and destroy them. I figured, as a single mom, I really couldn't afford them anyway. It wasn't worth upsetting him either.
I loved this piece. You said so much with so few words.

Yes, kids say the dardest things. There used to be TV slow with Art Linkletter called House Party. See these clips on You Tube hosted by Bill Crosby. - Lobber

Glad to see this post from you. The kid really nailed the narrator. Smoking is an expensive habit, even more now than ever, so a smoker's money is really going up in smoke. I hope the narrator kept that in mind next time she talked to her son about spending money. Excellent background for this with the Fourth of July fireworks and the temptation to buy them. This story is well put together, and best of luck in the contest. Great entry. judi

Thanks. :I'm beginning to REALLY appreciate how so many writers struggled with their own issues that U took fir granted. Typing as an issue seems plain dumb!
My kid is now 44 and still has his wit.

You're welcome. Sometimes great wisdom comes from the mouths of kids. judi

This is a terrific entry for this 100 word flash fiction contest. I am still trying to quit and could relate to this one on a personal level. I sincerely wish you all the best in this contest too.

Aren't you sweet/ Thanks for the glitter/ Been awhile since I made the effort--very frustrating. I haven't quit either. We are social lepers.

I've been taking some time off to give my eyes a break.

Ooooh he got ya there. My dad asked for a cigarette from someone one and once they gave it to him he proceeded to rip it up. He said they got so mad at him, but he looked at them and said that if he'd smoked it would be ruined and gone...just like the one he ripped up. I think it's the same thing as this. lol.

Ah how children can be so fast on the uptake of the truth. This is an excellent flash fiction with all the requisite components, Ingrid and the surprise ending has just the right amount of wit to get a wry laugh.
Best of luck to you with the Contest Committee. :)

Out of the mouths of babes. Gotcha, didn't he?
Very cute story, especially since it's true. I feel the same way about burning up my money in fireworks.
Good luck in the contest.

Thanks so much. Yes, he hasn't lost his sense of humor, but I don't think he thought it was funny.

Don't you just hate the comebacks your kid can come up with? It's so easy to forget our own transgressions and they are quick to remind us. LOL This is delightful, Ingrid.
Well done. Good luck in the contest. Nancy:)

In his late teens I got carried away and called Michael a son of a bitch, and he told me he completely agreed with me. LOL Thanks.

Ouch! It is a tough pill to take when the kids become wiser than the parent. This is an excellent contest entry. It's timely given the 4th is still fresh in everyone's mind. It's relevant given the subtle themes of financial responsibility and kids becoming wiser than we might want them to be. It was an enjoyable read beginning to end. I wish you all the best in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.
