Neat story! The dialogue is realistic and moves the story along well. The doctor humors the crabby old colonel in a way that is amusing yet caring.

"start with pulling these open li-" -- this line is a bit confusing to me. What word is intended that gets cut off? Should it say "pulling open these bli--"? (Or, am I missing something?)

I like the ending--understated.

Thanx for your wonderful review, Coco, and the heads up on that line....I changed it there at the end of that line to help with understanding -- if you get a chance, let me know if it makes a difference1 ;) ;) ;) Thanx again for stopping by and have a wonderful day! ;) ;) Yvette

And I must add to the fine doctors list of credentials: the patience of Job. This is fun and fresh and a wonderful entry for the contest. I laughed the whole way through.
All my best and in the contest,
Sal xo

So glad you enjoyed this one, Lady Sal -- it was certainly fun to write!! ;) ;) Always had a soft spot for the patients that seemed a bit 'surly' when i volunteered and the doctors just had so much patience in one form or another.... so that's where this one came from! ;) ;) Thanx for the review on this one, ma'am, and hope you soaked up your supply of beach rays to last til next time!! ;) ;) Yvette

This was a great dedication to those doctors, Yvette. Good luck in the contest. It was great of you to capture the true feelings of the patient, they actually do talk and think that way because that is their reality. Well done.

Well you are most welcome, after many years in nursing I retired but I actually do miss the surly patients (smile)

Great repartee between these two, and I liked the way you ended with the conversation between the Colonel and Dorothy. The only thing I thought a little overdone was the "Hehehe".

A very well-written story about the life of patients and doctors in the VA medical centers. The veterans need every treatment they get and the doctors help with everything they have.

This story was as funny as it was serious. The Colonel would test the patience of most nurses I reckon and most would not be able to handle him. It takes a special kind of lady to be able to give and take the colonels personality. She is a true diamond and he knows it BUT he will never tell her that, no n n no no no : ) a great little story with some kick-ass dialogue, good luck!

Thanx, Hitch, for taking the time to read this one and to really get everything I was trying to convey....I always worry that these aren't as 'understandable' to folks who aren't 'in my head' when I can't use words to describe what's in my head...LOL!! ;) ;) When I used to volunteer at one of the places near home and there was always one or two quite surly or, shall we say, challenging folks (male and female) that would really 'rag' you face-to-face' but that would just sing your praises to the staff... always made me laugh when a staff member would let me know about a compliment or something! :) ;) I did always admire the doctors and the nurses that could continuously smile and be cheery from morning til night, even when some of the patients were anything but "delightful" to them! :) ;) Thanx again for the review, sir, and take care over there! :) Yvette :)

This is a great read. I was lucky enough to have done some shifts as a fill-in RN in a V.A. hospital back in the 1980's and I could almost picture myself back there, dealing with some of the WWII vets while I was reading this.
I found nothing to suggest in the way of edits or corrections. It was a good tribute indeed. Good luck in the contest.
All the best,
Jan

This may be your best job of characterization. Is that a word? What I mean is that you do a wonderful job of developing the two characters in the dialogue. I love both the doctor and the Colonel. This dialogue is easy to follow and very entertaining. Nobody means anything that they say until the very end. You have to read between the lines. That is hard to craft.
Another winner, Yvette.

So glad you seem to have gotten what I tried to portray and that the dialogue worked well! ;) ;) Had one reviewer say they would have liked more background on the Colonel and another thought the doctor was snarky (or something like that)....c'est la vie!! ;) ;) Thanx for the smile of positivity, MQ! ;) ;) Yvette

Good job on showing us a grumpy colonel who hates being laid up with a bad leg but enjoys his doctor's visits. The doctor has a great personality, so they tease each other and get along just fine, though they openly pretend not to. There must be many such pairs in VA hospitals. :)

Well you got a good soldier in that there hospital, Yvette. Too bad he's spit and fire and gone to smoke. :) I just came from the V. A. and that doctor wanted to give me more pills. I don't like pills. If I don't need them I will not take them. Nor do I like flue shots. I got enuff germs don't need more. :) This is a good entry for the Dialogue Only Writing Contest.

These were some of my favorite folks when I volunteered, Jose -- and, I'm with you, no pills....they seem to want you to take a pill for everything these days! ;) ;) Thanx for the review on this one, sir! ;) ;) Yvette
