Dear YM,

A warmhearted nurse that is for sure. The grouchy old veteran playing the hard bitten type. My son-in-law is an army nurse so he could really relate to this story. Good dialogue between the two.

Cheers,

Winslow

Thanx so much for your review on this one, Winslow -- it was a fun write as I had a particular doctor from memory who had the patience of Job with everyone! :) ;) Take care! ;) Yvette

Hi Yvette, This is a great entry for the dialogue only contest. I love the interaction between the two, but I must admit that I find her approach slightly condescending. I know patients hate to be called 'we' and rightfully so. Great writing as well. Good luck. Ulla:)))

A worthy entry for the dialogue only contest. Dealing with veterans and other elderly people would try the patience of Job sometimes. I admire those who work with these people and always manage to be kind and professional.

Oh my, poor Dr. taking so much abuse. But it didn't seem to bother her much. And then it turns out he thinks she a great Dr. Some people are just that way. I didn't see any errors. Well done. Hope you do well in the contest. Rox

He Yvette. What I see in the story is not only the compassion of the doctor but the person of the Colonel. I read him as a man struggling to cope with some physical problems and he resists probably because of his history and realization of his condition. [I am eligible for VA care but I have never been to a VA facility.]

Oh, I'm so glad you got what I was trying to convey here, Z....without 'extra stuff" I find that some folks misunderstand the interaction - c'est la vie, I suppose. These actually come down to what a reader's mood is to begin with (or, deeper than that, 'where they're coming from') so, i guess 'bantering dialogue' in writing and not audio can be misconstrued in those circumstances.... again, c'est la vie! :) ;) Thanx for dropping by, and have a great week ahead! ;) ;) Yvette

Excellent dialogue, good luck in the contest. As a frequent patient to the VA hospital in New Orleans. I concur with the conclusions of the Colonel.

Oh yes, it takes some skill to deal with the colonel. There are thousands just like him in hospitals and homes all over the world. Caring for them is not an easy job and I have the utmost respect for the people who do it every day.

A very well written dialogue, Yvette. It describes the feelings of the patient.
Especially the sturdy ones feel so helpless.... It reminds me of my late husband, he was surly too when he was ill...never a nice compliment, until the day before he died....Great write!!! Fia

Thank you for your review, Fia -- so very glad you enjoyed this fun write! :) ;) I used to volunteer at one of the places near home and there was always one or two crotchety folks (male and female) that would really give you a hard time face-to-face but then would sing your praises to the staff... always made me laugh! :) ;) I did admire the doctors and the nurses that could continuously smile and be cheery from morning til night, even when some of the patients were anything but "delightful" to them! :) ;) Thanx again for the review and take care, ma'am! :) Yvette :)

This work has reached the exceptional level

I think this is a strong contest entry. What I liked about this piece was the personalities and emotions of the characters came through in the speech idiosynchrises, and they were realistic and crisp. We really feel the counterpunching of the nurse and the patient here, feel the frustration, yet a smidgen of attraction there as well. It was well imagined, well constructed. Hence the six. estory

M'am this dialogue is quite humorous as well as caring on the part of the doctor. The old Colonels, are they as demanding this one? Good luck in the contest. I liked this very much as it did remind me of my own father a bit.
