Hi Yvette :)
I really enjoyed this!
The quick, literal and often dirty minds of children never fail to amuse. I love Nicholas' interpretation of Sir Philippe's remark!
An engaging and well written first chapter that leaves the reader wanting to read on... and maybe you will write on? I'd certainly like to know about Constantine!
Good luck in the contest.
Best wishes, Debra :)

I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Debra -- I'm looking forward to the challenge of a complete chapter in only 500 words... at least it's but once a month! ;) :) And, of course, it's another fantasy for my imagination to run wild in!! ;) ;) Take care over there! ;) Yvette

A very well-written chapter in the story of the gardens at Weatherbury, an interesting new gardener at age fourteen to take over from the fired older gardener who'd do something, not to the taste of Sir Phillippe.

To care for gardens is not just a skill but a passionate love affair with nature. Gardeners never see the toil but the beauty they want to achieve and they have a vision which is shared with every onlooker. I enjoyed your words Yvette, love Dolly x

What a gorgeous picture. I'd take that job if I could. The chapter grabbed my interest. He seems too young for groundskeeper, but I"m sure you can make it work. Of course, you have magic gnomes to help. Fantasy/magic is the one genre I don't care for and never read, but I'd be curious about this teenager and his gnome. :)

Thanx for dropping by on this one... yes, fantasy is definitely not among the 'fan favorites' here on this sight, but I y'am what I y'am..as a famous sailor used to say! ;) ;) I do appreciate your trying, though...means a lot! ;) ;) Take care of you, ma'am!! :) Yvette

This is a different contest, Jose -- this one has to be a single chapter in 500 words...so, I'm gonna make it one "500-worder" per month! ;) ;) Thanx for the review, sir -- hang in there with me! ;) ;) LOL! Yvette

Oh, it sounds like it's a magical garden and it seems that young Nicholas has a special connection with everything in the garden. I don't know if the "package" joke would fly because that's a very recent slang term and somehow the language of this piece seems farther back in the past. Fun opening chapter, Yvette!

One capitalization note:
"I'd been helping mom" (Mom). I've only learned this recently but whenever Mom or Dad is used like a name, it's capitalized. But it wouldn't be if he said, "my mom."

Thank you for catching that, Helen -- I went in and corrected! ;) :) And I'm glad you enjoyed....this one's gonna be a good challenge for me: has to be 500 words (or just under) only...so, I'm looking forward to it!! ;) Hey, and it's only once a month! ;) ;) Take care and thanx for having my back! ;) ;) Yvette

Well, let me close my mouth that you are starting another book. And it's as good as the other two books of yours that I am addicted to. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing. And, whatever made you think of that severance package misunderstanding. Charming way to introduce your character. Just kidding. I thought that it was Amazing and Funny, Funny, Funny.
I am running out of superlatives for your work.
Just keep em comin.

I appeals to me already. I'm anxious to see how well Nicholas does. I'm a little surprised at his audacity in speaking the way he did to Sir Philippe.

-I'm pretty [?] Sir Philippe had offered this job to me as a joke.
