This is a great contender for the writing prompt.
Really well written - all the clues to the surprise are in the words you chose in your first paragraph, but I was definitely surprised to know why the wife was cold and distant! Great finishing line too.

No, they didn't say the surprise had to be a happy one, Anonymous Author. And let's face it, life ain't always a bed of roses. Sometimes you just get the thorns.
Well, I'd guess no one was more surprised in this story than the guy's poor daughter.
