The awful despots of history - and some are still doing these deeds. How awful to see these floating dead - and know one might be a friend or a family member. This is still going on for Christians I understand in Nigeria? Hundreds of men, women, children, being murdered for their faith.
Pray for them

Gail, thanks so much for reviewing. I appreciate your comments. Bodies did not appear frequently in the Mapocho River. The regime was quite "successful" in hiding the torture and murders from the general public until many years later when mass graves were found in remote parts of the country.

The images are vibrant and emotional, and I think you captured in a somber tone here the sense of loss, of a generation martyred, captured in stone above the ever moving river. That juxtaposition of stone and river at once brings together the sense of timeless pain, but also of movement in history, of passing time. The contrast is poignant. We can't quite go on in the world, carrying all this pain of loved ones lost. We can't quite leave the monument at the river. estory

Dear Author,
Your beautifully written poem tells a poignant story that is heartbreaking. I cannot imagine the human loss and what the bodies represented. Thank you for sharing this with us.
My best,
Deborah

In my opinion, a striking personal account of a depraved regime, responsible for the death and mayhem of human lives - written with emotionally charged expression in compelling and articulate free verse refrain, a time eternally etched in memory and forever within historical doctrine...

Hello Santiago2!
Stellar.
Poignant. A must read. Yet...many individuals have forgotten - or worse - have no working knowledge of the atrocities of Pinochet. Your words create keen visual and emotive images.
Thank you for sharing!

Comment from Brenda Henderson
Chilling and compelling to read. The notation afterwards made the narrative live and paints vivid pictures in the mind of the reader. A notable and engaging work. Well done!

This smoothly-flowing, beautiful poem--set in nature--tells a story, along with the notes, of brutality and murder in a land where people were not
allowed at that time free to speak their minds.

Thank you, Janice, for your kind comments. Prior to Pinochet, Chile had a long history of democratically elected governments.

All countries have sad chapters in their histories. We (U.S.) certainly have ours!
Comment from Sandra du Plessis
A very well-written heartfelt poem and author notes. There are too many people who are evil in powerful positions in the world and they do not care about another's life.

Sandra, I appreciate the compliment. Thank you so much for reviewing. Sadly, the world still hasn't rid itself of rulers like Pinochet.

This poem, Arrogance and the River, forms a poignant story of death and injustice in those Chilean hills so long ago. Time covers but may never heal.

Comment from James W. Reynolds
Even without knowing the specific history, this is a powerful poem. It is all the more effective because it does not come across as a rant. The images are vivid, especially how the river swells "with tears of the dead."
