Craig, you have penned a very moving verse. I did not know about the term .. black dog.. you use it very effectively in this poem. I hope to read more from you soon. It is always so good.

Aww Craig this is so lovely. You are obviously a "dog" person LOL I have only owned one dog and her name was Ebony haha Great minds think alike LOL
It's clear the dog had a tremendous impact on you and the memories have held strong. So nice to see you have / had other dogs too. While it's important NOT to forget those special pets and the bonds created, it's paramount we continue to enjoy the love a pet provides, albeit a different one.
They are easy to love.
We have eight cats.
Your rhyming and storing telling interweave beautifully.
LOVED THIS

Aha! So, does that make you officially a crazy cat lady, Phillippa? ;-)
I love cats, too. We always had them in the house while I was growing up. I'd love to have one (or more), not only for the great company they provide, but also to help keep the rodent population down! Unfortunately, keeping them in would be a bit difficult where I am, and we are only a few hundred meters from a major highway. I dread what might happen to them.
Thanks for the wonderful rating and the lovely comments, I am always happy to see you on the reviewer's list :)
Cheers,
Craig

A beautiful poem, Craig. Very touching and enjoyable. I agree with you. I've had many dogs--the first dog started the whole thing when I turned 40. Each one special and dearly missed. Marilyn

Thank you so much for the lovely comments and delightful rating, Marilyn. Forty is quite late to be getting your first dog... I think I was about 18 months lol. But I'm sure you were much better able to appreciate its value. They are wonderful creatures, and can bring so much joy for so little in return.

Hi Craig, this is a lovely metaphor for rescuing our inner children in life. We do need to protect the most vulnerable parts of us, but also learn to expose them to make ourselves vulnerable in a relationship. That's how I see the owner and dog relationship, based on pure love and trust. Lovely sonnet.

Thanks so much for the kind and thoughtful comments, Pam. I don't really even think of myself as an "owner", more an adopted parent, and the word "pet" grates a little, but I use them for want of anything better. I really think they are our family, sometimes more so than blood ties. Most grateful, Craig

Craig, This is a very well written poem about the black dog and the little boy. You used very good descriptive words and lovely art work. I think you did a great job on this poem Craig. I understood what you were referring to. Blessings, Teri

Hi Craig
I missed you.
nice poem , the emotion is felt and the black gog at the end is a double entender I think.
My black dogs come and go
some are like sausage dogs
some are noisy poodles
very SAD
Lack of sunshine exposure at this latitude does awful things . :-))Z.
Hope you are well .

Well, I'd suggest a holiday somewhere south to cheer you up, but we had our first snow for the year yesterday. Thanks for the great comments, Z, much appreciated :) Cheers, Craig

Hi Craig, with the danger of being hopelessly ignorant I didn't know that 'black dog' was a metaphor for depression. I am ignorant. I've never suffered from depression and never known any who did. It can't be pleasant, though. I liked your poem, and thanks for the notes that made me read it in another light. All the best. Ulla:))

It seems like a silly metaphor to me, as dogs bring joy, not pain. Still, maybe it's something to do with them (the black ones) being like a shadow? Thanks for reviewing, and the kind comments, Ulla :) Cheers, Craig

I read Gloria's poem on depression and yes, yours is different but equally poignant Craig. I loved this one and the closing couplet is perfect. Loved it,
cheers

Dear Author,
I found your poem and Author's note well-written--both a story and facts I couldn't stop reading. You ability to write is captivating. I, too, found Gloria's poem outstanding and if I still had a 6 star ranking to give you, I would.
Thank you for sharing,
Deborah

Awww... this one nearly brought a tear, Craig -- as an animal lover, I can so very much relate to this one! :) Your rhythm here just murmurs softly to the reader until their own furry companion can fill that place in their lives... just wonderful! ;) Thanx for sharing! ;)
P.S. So good to see your name on the listings again, Sir! ;) Welcome back! :)
