Well done, author. I think overall this poem tells the story very well. Of course nothing can bring back the brave souls who sacrificed the ultimate with their lives.
"Uncommon valor was a common virtue" as it says at the base of the Iwo Jima flag raising statue.

If possible, the only change I might make would be this stanza which seems a bit off in rhythm:

"War raged in Europe,
Leaving people without hope,
Once we landed in Normandy,
Germany could barely grope."

Bless you, my friend. Salute! Semper Fi! Bob

To me it is a poem that touches the heart and causes one to pause and think. I like the way you mentioned many wars. It is a wonderful tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and I wish you the best with this entry.

A fine memorial poem and you covered the wars of recent times here and so many lives were lost collectively, we must never forget those souls lost, best wishes, love, Dolly x

Well done! You wrote about just all of the US wars beginning with WW1, then came up to Afghanistan and Iraq. So, you managed to write about past and present. I think your rhymes were tight. It's hard to find good rhyming words that deal with such a difficult subject, but I think you accomplished that.

A very well-written poem about the wars we fight and the many lives lost cannot be for gotten. The only problem with war is that it create more problems than solving anything.

In my opinion, kindness is not warranted with this write, but appreciation is - a stunning poem in its heartfelt tribute to those who fought and to those who fought and died. The rhyming rhythm is of little concern with such a glorious write, but it is certainly smooth enough for a lyric and emotional read. Thank you for sharing...

Dear Mystery Poet,

I agree. Sometimes the words are what really matter and sometimes we really do get too hung up on all the logistics of poetry-writing. This was a cool piece and lovely way to remind us to be thankful to all who've served and given the highest and best gift of all.

Thanks and good luck!

A sharp salute from an old Nam-era sailor who still feels some guilt and being able to come home. Like the rhyming and the crisp points. Will think of it as my American Legion post places flags on the 25th.

From your writing, I assume you are a Veteran, too. For most of us, EVERY day is Memorial Day because we think of those who did not come home every day. And, my love and respect for them and America only grows.
