Excellent, a very sad commentary. We seem to be fighting someone all the time. Many young men lie in foreign graves all over the world. Yet, some of our Americans, mostly young, disrespect our fighting men and women and our great country. Excellent post.

Hard to attack a poem about fallen heroes so you may not be on sacred ground but at least safe ground. I agree some rhymes feel like a stretch and some lines are not well connected. Revisit this work. You can always make edits. Even after the contest ends. Good luck.

This is an incredibly stirring Memorial Day tribute! Well done! Every rhyme is perfect, every stanza is moving. Thank you for penning this lovely poem! "As many will attest, we sent our bightest and best." Those lines really makes me want to cry.

    Congratulations on a third place ribbon! (I know those are hard to come by.) In any event, it's a first-place poem!

Memorial day has always been important to me since I was 15 and my father was killed in a car accident. He was in World War II stationed in the Philippines. When I told him before he was killed, I was planning on joining the Marine Corps, he said that it shoot me in the leg first. But he wasn't there to stop me. So I spent 22 months in Vietnam about the same amount of time he spent in the Philippines. Every chance I get I put flowers on my mothers grave and a flag on my dad's grave. I never thought I'd see the age of 20 when I was in Vietnam. Now I'm going to be 72 the first part of June. I appreciate your tribute to my my fallen brothers. Best wishes.

Great work, I think really enjoyed reading this. I like the flow as the poem moves through history. My only critique would be to tighten up the rhyme scheme where you can, such as here;

Once we landed in Normandy,
Inevitable defeat for Germany

Sometimes it just takes the change of a couple of words to make it flow better. All in all great work though. Thanks for posting, best of luck on the contest,
-BT

A very thought provoking work that details so many wars and battles. Normally I would give a four for this, as the aa,bb format is a little to light for such a serious topic.
However you have made your point well and I can see how your thoughts flowed easily

indeed, this does come from the heart and yes, the meter and rhyme are not that well crafted but the purpose is bigger than the actual outcome.
thank you for sharing!
good luck!

You've summed it up so well - would that our young people - the ones in college and a bit older could even remember history - even many older folks don't get it. We stand for a safe America. We stand for displaced persons - and against evil. And our military stand between. Thanks for all the reminders. And we thank the men and women who protected and defended.

I can see how it happened that once you started it was hard to stop, for a couple of reasons: you wrote it from the heart and got into the emotion of your topic, and also, there have been so many damn wars to mention! You have penned a fine memorial poem of respect to honour the fallen.

I know nothing about meter and rhyme so I can't give you my expert opinion, but I like how your poem sounds and what it says.
Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest.
