Author: I'm having a problem understanding how this is a poem. There is no discernible rhythm. It reads as an essay would read. Because of this, the message is lost on me. This is just my opinion, of course. Maybe I need another cup of coffee! Best wishes in the contest. livelylinda

This is a prose poem possessing poetic qualities, including intensity, compactness, and imagery. The sentiment expressed is the key in this type of poetry, in my opinion. Thanks for the feedback. Enjoy your coffee.

Your grandfather had a remarkable life and how great that you got to hear so many of his stories. I really enjoyed reading this thanks, and good luck in the contest.

Hi Contest Author,
Awww, this is such a sweet story. I am happy for you that you had time with him. My grand parents were all dead before I was born. One offering:
"My grandfather would come home from
His job as at the Chicago stockyards"
I think deletein "as" here would help the flow.
Thanks for sharing.

A very well-written heartfelt poem about a child's wonderful experience with his grandparents especially a grandfather that ewas the story teller and served as second parent and life teacher.

Your poem has a lovely sense of nostalgia. Sharing time with a grandparent is special as they have had such different life experiences to our own, and particularly so in your own grandfather's case. Time on the porch swing was time well spent.

Thank you for taking the time to read and the review. Went back to his old house a few years ago. The swing was gone.

Our memories often get carried away, just like the swing.

So true. Good reason for writing them down.

This is a wonderful list of recollections of time spent with a beloved grandparent -- it is so very evident through your words and clear descriptions that those times meant a lot to you -- thank you for sharing them with us and best of luck at the polls! :) :)

I was taken back to the swing at my grandparents' house. My grandmother told lots of stories, which I treasure. Not my grandfather, though. I have wonderful memories of him to cherish, but I now wish I had asked him about his life, especially his childhood. You have wonderful details in your poem, an American story. I really like that he told you he couldn't look at their eyes and about the radio. I make a point to tell my granddaughter about my early life. You remind us how important that is.

This is a wonderful entry for the contest. The picture just adds to it. This flows very well. It is an easy read to follow. This is very sweet. I feel this is from the heart and a real account of a boy and his grandfather. Good luck in the contest. Very well done.

What a well-written tribute to your beloved grandfather. I liked mention of the coal mines of PA. I'm from that part of the state. I was also touched by his concern for the animals at the Stockyards, because I've stopped eating meat because of that cruelty. Well, but, this is about your writing, and it is quite good. I like the image of the colorful sunset.

Wonderful memories - encapsulated in brief lines - that chronicle an important time in our nation's history, and tell of times that challenged the souls of our people. Thank you for sharing these memories that we all need to be mindful of. Your words made me think of what my own grandchildren will remember of my stories through times when the challenges are different.
Beautiful photograph.
