This is a truly astute observation... life changes the channel without your permission... It makes you be present when you'd rather disappear... not nice. yours, diana

Thank you for your review. As we get older, and do not have to focus on jobs or kids, it is nice to remember the adventures in life and build a story around them. I was lucky to have had a job which kept me traveling and I truly enjoyed the places I went and the people I met. Glad you enjoyed it!

This was very nice to read. I liked the old man's story and he was a strong, rich character in the poem. I wish you good luck in the contest. Shirley

I enjoyed your thought-provoking poem. You did a great job with your contest entry, Mystery Author. Your lines flow smoothly, the rhymes are great, the dialogue is an added bonus, and the storyline interesting and complete. I like how your notes reaffirm your message of the poem. I believe you worked long and hard on this great entry. Best wishes. Jan

Thank you, Jan. Glad I was able to touch your interest with my work. Dialogue does make writing more complicated, but for this story, the dialogue is the story. Life gave me some great opportunities to stretch my boundaries and I took them. I assume you are also one who seeks the new experience or you would not have enjoyed my tale. Have fun in the adventure! Regards. By the way, there indeed was a Lee Chun and one kiss on Victoria Heights has been an inspiring memory for over 50 years...

BLESS YOU, 24 Chas! All of us who write, love to write and write to write, but on occasion, we write one that seems better than our usual. And, we naturally think the world will see it that way. After a line of 5s, finally! Feels great. Do you play golf? Your 6 felt like sinking a 30 foot putt! Tomorrow, I start a challenging week of taking grand-kids camping and this gets me off to a great start! Thanks!

You deserve it. Can you tell me who you are since the contest doesn't reveal the writers? I'd love to fan your work.

I am honored. Thank you! You gave me more respect than I get from my wife! Since you like this poem, you might enjoy my recent "Corporate Wing-tips and me". You've made my day. God Bless.

Oh, you wrote that? That was awesome. In fact, I voted for it in the contest. I really like your work.

I enjoyed this and particularly like your comment in the notes 'Life is lived best near the edge ....' I think that is a very true statement and your poem explores that thought nicely.

Thank you. For people like us, no matter how comfy life might have become, where there is a window, we can't help but look at the hills beyond and wonder (and, wander).

Your poem explores this theme through the eyes of the old sailor and your author notes tell it even more convincingly.... experiences in different places beyond our own understanding and comforts are where the true Love of Life can be gained. I totally agree and have tried to live.

Thank you. Glad you could relate and join me in the celebration of Love of Life. I was born and raised in what people think is a really neat place - Austin, Texas. It was fun, but the Navy took me places that lit a fire in me. I think 90% of my HS class never left Austin while I have enjoyed the world. Maybe they're happy, but I am ecstatic. Even at 72, I am still like a dog when a car door opens! I bet you are too. Enjoy Spring!

Hi Contest Author,

This is a superior poem/story and contrasts the folly of younger people's perspectives with those ebgaged in their life review. Your message is clear and your notes really drive it home. I've heard it said that at the end of our lives, it will be rare to regret the things we tried and experienced, but rather the things we never tried. Best of luck in the contest and thanks for sharing. Jan

Glad you stopped by my offering. You are correct about regretting not trying new things. Among my favorite quotes, from Teddy Roosevelt, "It is by far greater to dare mighty things, even if checkered by failure, than to live in that twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat." In my own life, I have known both. Between the two, I like victory best!

Thank you for a nice review. I think we have all, in our own way, left the party to care for somebody in need. I have a feeling you would do that anytime. And, we who reach for new experiences enjoy a love of life that some don't even want - they prefer the quiet peace of their small world. I needed more. Fan's challenge allowed me to share a life that was perfect for me. And, yes, there was a Lee Chun who gave a sailor on R&R during Nam, a very sweet kiss on Victoria Heights. It was a moment that helped shape my entire life thru business in 25 countries over 35 years...

What a cheerful and unique offering for this contest -- you've got a great write here! ;) ;) And an interesting form you've used as your format...it works really well in your 'storytelling'. :) :) I only wish there was a way to eliminate some of the numerous quotation marks as they almost detract from your delightfully rhymed piece. :) Perhaps through the use of italics and two different colors to indicate speech of the two speakers and the narrative could remain plain text? ... just a suggestion.... A great beach story and love of life! ;) ;) Thanx for sharing! :)

Certainly an honor of a nice review from one of the leading poets here at Fan. I appreciate that. Yes, the quotation marks are speed bumps in the reading. Maybe I will find a better way. In this case, the story is the dialogue and, to celebrate the dialogue, the quotes are the best tool I know. Fan's challenge allowed me to share a life that was perfect for me. And, yes, there was a Lee Chun who gave a sailor on R&R during Nam, a very sweet kiss on Victoria Heights. Nothing I enjoy more than a great free rhyming poem. I find them to be the most enjoyable reads and can also be extremely meaningful. They don't get enough respect and I loved this poem. Vividly spoke to me and I really enjoyed. Thank you
