You are right that this pristine white house looks like a Southern Plantation house not an insane asylum. It seems love has brought both back from insanity. Maybe the door will open out for them now.

You're right, the photo looks like a southern plantation estate. Your poem is powerful. I read it many times before I really think I understood what your message was about your experience and your journey from darkness to light. I thought I knew who the anonymous author was that penned this loquacious, frolicking free verse poem but I checked and I was wrong.
I already knew of the diabolical history of the Chattahoochee Mental Hospital.
It ranks right up there with the atrocities perpetrated against the residents of Pennhurst Mental Hospital in Spring City, Pennsylvania.
Well penned, informative notes.

I thought I knew who the anonymous author was that penned this loquacious, frolicking free verse poem but I checked and I was wrong.
I already knew of the diabolical history of the Chattahoochee Mental Hospital.

The old Georgia Insane Asylum at Milledgeville is another nightmare in a good land. About 30,000 graves of inmates over centuries of existence...the state prison was nearby...excellent post...

Wow, there but for the grace of God...! What a story and how graphically related, I'm very impressed with this poem. Dividing it into "Assaults" adds to the mounting horror each new wave brings which is then contrasted by the final tenderness; an outstanding tribute to your friend.
I would just question line 9, "the this jail."

What an interesting story you tell here, of the man who was illegally imprisoned for so long in what is not the gorgeous southern mansion it appears to be. I wonder how common this story is? Too common, would be my guess. That's where Brown's Law came from I suppose - it is now very difficult to get someone locked up in a mental hospital.
The antiseptics "masking decades of despair..." Well done!

Though this hospital does sound like just about anyone's worst nightmare, it seems it's also the place where you met Vera, obviously the answer to your prayers. You have enough info on the history of the place, as well as your own personal experience, have you considered a book? Meeting Vera would obviously lead to your happy ending!
