This was an excellent comedic villanelle. You captured the absurdity of it and loved the artwork you picked to go with. The beatnik quoting this is the perfect touch. Nice job.

Thank you. It was fun to write.

S5, L1- I suggest that "must" is unnecessary in this delightful poem, and I would omit it for a smoother flow.
I think your repeating line of "those nineteen lines of rhyming hell" is hilarious, by the way. You might have inspired me to write another villanelle... (*grin*) Good luck in the contest.

A Villanelle poem is one that is difficult to write because of all the rules in the rhyming and the placement of lines. You did well. It was a fun read. Good luck in the contest. Patricia

I would give this work six stars if I had them if not only for pure thanks for the excellent learning process on this very rare and uncommon poetic style, so well presented here. My thanks to this author for a fine read! HIS GRAYNESS Vance

A taste of the writer's woes as he / she wades into the wonders of the Vilanelle so humorously portrayed here with a sense of panache - and a superb pic

I think you did it Chris! You are entitled to pick up some Zinfandel but you probably need a stiff Brand instead! Oops that does not rhyme with Villanelle! He he he, your write made me smile, I just love your presentation! I must give one a try and see if I go to hell and back! He he he, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly. I really do think they're fun to write - just a bit of a puzzle. Once you set up the rhyme scheme and pick your two rhyming words it becomes a pretty simple poem to write. They are lots of fun. I appreciate the stars!

You inspired me Chris! I will write a villanelle and post it and dedicate it to you! Love Dolly x

I would love that, Dolly!

Thank you for sharing this poem. I also do not care for writing villanelles. You seem to have accomplished the task with a poem about the task of writing. The illustration is also appropriate.

Way to go!!! This is one of the most difficult forms to write in my opinion. I wrote one last week and it definitely is the most challenging one up until now. Well done on all of the moving parts.. Great write!!

Fun satirical irony. Villanelles are indeed challenging and crazy-making! This has fantastic rhymes! Pretty good timing too. A few punctuation and spag suggestions:
If I could write a Villanelle,
it's French, and it's arcane(--)
those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.
I suffer with its rules to quell
five tercets with one quatrain.
If I could write a Villanelle(--)
L(l)ike Thomas, Plath, and Joyce, as well(--)
two rhymes and two refrain(s)(...)
those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.
Another rule there is to tell(:)
lines one and three repeat again(.)
If I could write a Villanelle.
A word of warning I must expel(:)
the rules will stretch your brain(.)
Those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.
Time to pick up some Zinfandel(;)
this format drives me insane.
If I could write a Villanelle,
those nineteen lines of rhyming hell.
Zinfandel and villanelle--clever rhyme!
Warmly, rd

Thanks for the punctuation help, sincerely. I wish
I'd paid better attention in school. :-)
-
Happy to help!
I learned much of my punctuation on writing sites like this one, not really in school! LOL

I enjoyed this excellent example of a villanelle even if it proved hard to do. Can I refer you to my portfolio - books - Flat Packed Poetry - To Write a Villanelle, posted in October 2016?
This resulted from my being asked how to do it. After some thought I came up with the method described in this villanelle.
