I sometimes hear of older couples getting divorced because the passion
is gone! They should read your poem! It is VERY well-written and conveys
a realistic theme.

A fun write and marriages mature in a pleasant way after the rush of passionate embrace and romp in the closet! He he he, life is a chess game and I liked your analogy here, I am also an avid player! He he he, love Dolly x

Thanx so much for your review, Dolly -- I certainly cannot come close to romance and love poems as you do .... I'm pretty sure I should have a t-shirt that says 'mushy ain't me'! :) ;) This poem almost wrote itself a few nights ago after that little nagging voice in the back of my brain was niggling at me to give 'Love Poems' one more try....I'm really not sure if it would be considered a "Love Poem" by some standards, but it is what it is! :) The whole chess thing just seemed to work at the time and I'm pleased that you enjoyed it! :) Be sure to get enough yet not too much practice - LOL! :) Yvette :)

A very well-written love poem. The face of love does change, it depends on how we play the game, we have to know when it is time to take and when it is time to give. Most marriages end when the sex period fade.

Your stars have just added a bright cap to an otherwise 'LONG' week -- thank you so much!!! :) ;) I usually avoid 'Love Poem' contests cuz I don't really have a 'mushy' bone in my entire body (LOL!) but after days of what I could write was clinking around in the back of my mind, this is what came out of the pencil a few nights ago....guess it's questionable as to whether or not it's a love poem, but it is what it is -- LOL! :) ;) The chess idea was fun to work with -- it's good to know it worked for you, too! :) Thanx again and have a wonderful remainder of the weekend! :) Yvette

Well, some of us always have our partners for life.
And then, there are those like me.
After twenty-two-years of playing "Avoid the Kids Chess", POOF!
It was over in the blink of an eye.
Nice to know you still have your soul mate, Yvette.
Many of us are not quite as fortunate as you.
~Dean

Sorry 'bout the 'POOF!', Sir Dean -- no need to say more. You know, David and I are fortunate...from the beginning, folks told us that we had nothing in common so the long term didn't look good. Well, thirty years on and still nothing in common...I guess our real test will come when we're both retired full -time .... aaack!! :) :) You know, I usually avoid 'Love Poem' contests cuz I don't really have a 'mushy' bone in my entire body (LOL!) and I guess it's questionable as to whether or not this is a love poem, but it is what it is -- LOL! :) ;) Tell Gidget to snuggle in tonight, Sir Dean - and you both enjoy the remainder of your weekend! :) Yvette

Wasn't expecting that at all but it was fun! There's something beautiful about a long term love relationship which has gone beyond physical needs but still keep the flame going in many ways. Chess wouldn't do it for us! Lol.

Oh Helen, I am so very glad you enjoyed this poem -- you know, 'mushy is just so not me' (LOL!) and I usually skip the 'tending toward mushy' competitions, but I just had to jump in with this one once it started coming out of the pencil a few nights ago! :) ;) As I've told a few other folks, I'm still not sure it actually fits the bill for a 'Love Poem', but, it is what it is, I guess! :) ;) Thank you for stopping by, Professor, and enjoy the remainder of the weekend! :) Yvette

Terrific poem that describes marriage perfectly. After all these years, Mark and I have grown together like two intertwined limbs of a tree, becoming one, and stronger for it.

Oh, Phyllis, you just made the week's ending a little brighter with those stars! :) ;) Thank you so very much for understanding where I was 'coming from' -- I usually skip these competitions just cuz 'mushy ain't me' (lol) and I'm still not sure if this is what 'they' would consider a 'Love Poem'....but this was me and I guess we'll see! :) :) Thanx for your continued support and may you continued to enjoy that strengthening of your bonds with Mark! :) Blessings! :) Yvette

I love your unique approach to everything that you write. Sometimes you're quirky, which I love. Sometimes, you just try to be original by presenting matters in a different light. The latter is what you did here. The analogy of marital love to a chess game is exceptional. My favorite two lines are "those years of chess we played together,
wove bonds between you and me."
You also wove humor into this piece, which makes it stand out even more.
Surely originality is a criteria for judging any contest. In that case, this poem should do very well. Plus this poem has good rhythm and meter. And it's definitely most heartfelt. I think that you should win.

So glad you enjoyed this, MQ -- TBH, I usually skip these competitions just cuz 'mushy ain't me' - LOL! :) ;) A poem of the angle that you chose, now that appeals to me, but it was your angle, and poaching is not in my nature!! :) :) ;) Seriously, though, I am glad you enjoyed this....I'm still not sure if it's the right 'kind' of thing for a 'Love Poem' competition, but I guess we'll see. :) Thank you for your awesome vote of confidence - enjoy the remainder of the weekend! :) Yvette

When I read yours, I thought--not your normal love story. That's what is appealing. It's a deeper, more realistic approach.

You are right from the title I was not expecting a love poem. But you cleverly wove the chess game into the love poetry. Good luck in the contest. Patricia

Of different type of love, indeed very creative write , deep and subtle, yet remaining a kind of mystery for the reader to understand the nuances. Chess is not an easy game and it is for the logically strong. There are crucial moves in the game and marriage (not my experience) may perhaps be a partnership in moves and positions... I somehow traced that thought in your poem. Enjoyed it very much!

Thank you for the review, Donka, and your wonderfully insightful coments. :) ;) Love poems are not my cup of tea and, in fact, I will usually skip these competitions just cuz 'mushy ain't me' - LOL! :) ;) I'm glad you enjoyed this one -- thanx for stopping by! :) ;) Yvette :)

Well done explaining the then and now phases in the marriage. The first sentence does not start with a subject pronoun...it made me have to read it again...I may have a tendency to write like that since one does not need a subject pronoun in Spanish (my native language)...but most times I end up adding it. You are encouraging me to leave it out...The "ho-hum" makes it more real ...it seems that you are literally talking to the reader. I like this line = "yes, there's still need to 'check that king' " Nice job with the picture and the font color to match the chess board. Best wishes.

Thanx for stopping by for the review, Carola -- just remember, the most important thing to be as a poet is to be yourself. I do not always have this 'informal' style and I'm not one to write a lot about 'personal' situations, but I'm one of those poets that goes where my muse (i.e., my thoughts at the moment!) lead me!! :) ;) So glad you enjoyed this write -- love poems are really not my 'thing', but this one started and wouldn't stop until I wrote it down! ;). :) Thanx again for the wonderful comments and know that you are welcome to stop by any time -- always got some iced tea to share!! :) ;) Take care and have an awesome weekend! :)
