Only a truly great writer can make such a category into somethimg so sweet and precious. A tree is a symbol in the Bible of a person. A planted one as an established person. A deeply rooted and vibrant tree that is bearing fruit--a blessed person. You are right to cultivate the tree in honor of your son. It is a symbol of his appreciation of life. What a fine man he must be. Good to see ya this year!
All my best,
Sal

Wow, Sally! :) Thanx so much for that wonderfully detailed review -- so glad you could stop by and enjoy! :) ;) And, this one really was completely fiction -- have friends that have husbands, sons, and/or daughters in the service, but not myself. I am glad that it touched you...makes me feel like I did it right! ;) Happy 2019 to you -- and it is certainly wonderful to hear from you!! :) ;) Take care and see ya 'round soon, I hope! ;) Yvette :)

What a great story this is! It reminded me of my son's red bean plant that he planted at school when he was five--we actually got three red beans off of it before we forgot about it on the windowsill. I'll have to plant another one and give it to him for his birthday :) Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing this lovely story!

I am not a Fiction reader but I was led to read this work of yours. First thing that strikes me as in your poetry, you are a master of the written word. There are no wasted words, each one falls in its right place. Then there is the story of the tree- a memory tree and a symbol that would not die. And, the most emotionally and spiritually significant part is the mother-son relationship... growing, loving respectful, subtle. A very moving and "communicating" to the reader work.

Wow -- I am simply floored at your wonderful words here, Donka -- humbled and floored. I am so very glad that this write touched you...it was one of those that I actually used a few tissues as I finished and proofed it -- I find that happens a lot more as the years kinda click off, ya know! :) ;) S'okay, though, I'll take the 'ticking' to the alternative - LOL! :) ;) Again, thank you for the shining stars - my smile is shining along with them! :) ;) Have a wonderful week wherever you are! :) ;) Yvette

A very touching response to this writing prompt/contest about a dying house plant. Memorial plants we strive to keep alive have special meaning to us. You've captured that sentiment well with your writing. Good luck in the contest.

Oh my gosh, what a heart-tugging tale. A circular tale of losing the father then off the son goes too, possibly to the same fate, but pray God not. And the continuity of looking after the seed till it grows into a tree (analogy of child to man), well shown. Maybe the mention of Christmas is relevant too... getting the best present of the son returning (to see his healthy avocado tree) and the birth of our Lord.

This is the best short story I have read in a very long time. Exceptional, poignant plot, superb pacing, wonderfully rich description, and so believable. Even the language of this marvelous narrative is so down-to-earth realistic I can almost envision the characters...

Masterful fiction, my friend; truly masterful.

Oh, Dawn -- you put a tear in my eye, lady! :) I am so very glad you enjoyed this one ... it really was a 'spur of the moment' contest entry, but when i read the contest prompt, the story was just 'right there in front of me' and then it just came out of my fingers......those happen sometimes...I chalk it up to the blonde hair!! :) LOL! LOL! Thanx for those wonderful comments and shiny stars -- you're the awesome one! :) :) take care! :) ;) Yvette :)

This is as good a reason as any I know for a plant to keep on living, Anonymous Author.
Your "Memory Tree..."
Isn't it funny how something so simple can fill us with hope and a determined resolve?
I realize you've listed this as fictitious. But I can't help but believe there is a grain, or some seed of truth in this poignant tale...somewhere.
Best of luck to you in the contest.
I'll be watching for this one...

Fiction for me, Sir Dean -- the rest is from my 'over-active' imagination in conjunction with watching some families at church and at work (there's a huge military base here...:) I am glad it touched you as that was the intent....was one of those that (and you're sworn to secrecy on this one) I had to have the Kleenex box here as the words appear on the page....shhhh. Just another reason you could say I'm just a crazy blonde - LOL! :) ;) Thank you for the wonderful review! :) :)

This brought tears, I have an off and on green thumb. I don't know how parents and spouses manage the anxiety of their loved one deployed, In your case it must be doubly hard. Sorry, I didn't have a six star left. Blessings, Barbara
